Is my PC future proofed?

no one knows. it's fine today, but next year we could see a massive leap in tech that could make all current hardware obselete, with RTX, 7nm there's no knowing what could happen even a few months from now.

I'm thinking of upgrading my PC soon as I am noticing dips below 60FPS in some games. I Play at 1080p on a 144Hz panel so I'd like to keep up that 144 fps whenever possible. I usually play on the ultra settings but I am happy lowering to high/ medium high if I can maintain 144 fps. A full list of specs in my current setup are in my signature and on my profile. Should I upgrade my PC now or wait until later and what should I upgrade to?

My Setup

Intel® Core™ i5-4590||Asrock Z97 Extreme4||8GB HyperX Fury 1600MHz DDR3||EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti HYBRID GAMING||NZXT H700i Matte Black/Blue||WD Green 240GB SSD||WD Blue 2TB HDD||Corsair CX550M||ASUS VG248QE 24" 144 Hz 1080p||Corsair Hydro Series H60 (2018)||Corsair K70||Corsair Gaming GLAIVE RGB||HyperX Cloud Stinger||Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

rise of the tomb raider, gta v, bf1, csgo, pubg, hitman, hitman 2, shadow of mordor. There are a few others but these are the ones at the top of my head. I'm wondering if my setup can handle some newer games like bf5, shadow of the tombraider, far cry 5 and the upcoming metro exodus game. I also want to know how many years I'd be able to play the newest games on at least high settings at 1080p over 120fps. Thanks for reply btw.

by future proofed i meant something that could last a few more years, should've clarified that. I am aware that its never possible to truly 'Future proof' a pc.

I might hold off until next year or the year after then to see if the next RTX cards are that much better than the current ones and if they can actually efficiently ray trace. I'd also have more money by then :P. Thanks for reply btw.

You would have to upgrade your CPU, RAM, and motherboard because you are using DDR3 and most newer CPUs and motherboard require DDR4.  Just something to think about before you upgrade.

I've seen people saying that they might start using DDR5 soon so hopefully DDR4 ram, mobos and cpus will be cheaper and easier to come by next year.

Your 980 Ti performs about the same as my 1070, and I game at 1080p.  No reason to upgrade yet.

Ok, thanks for letting me know :D

You have ti pretty much upgrade the CPU, mobo memory and GPU to do that reliably, but the best time to upgrade will be Q2 or Q3 next year.

Mobos and CPUs will be cheaper 1-2 years after new generation launches, mainly because people are waiting for new gen to buy older gen and there's no point for vendors to do major price drops to clear warehouses. RAM pricing is oddity in there, it might drop or not.

Overall, you are end of the line with that combo. Like said before, futureproofing is nonsense. The way you should look at it, is when to upgrade and how easy/cheap it will be when you decide to do it. In your current situation, you can go for i7 and overclock it. That gives some more room, maybe year longer than i5 would.
