I work as a photocopier technician, I get a lot of old 2.5" drives from old machines. I'd really like to wipe them and use them as archival drives but they're password locked (if plugged in during boot it asks for a password) (if plugged into a dock after boot the drive still cannot be accessed), Is there a way to completely erase the drive and thus remove the password? Have done lots of googling and cant find anything useful.

ATA Secure Erase should work, it's what I use myself. There are some specialty-drives where even that doesn't work, but I've never encountered such drives myself. Probably easiest to boot up Ubuntu from a USB-stick and e.g. use the instructions at https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/ATA_Secure_Erase

Hand, n. A singular instrument worn at the end of the human arm and commonly thrust into somebody’s pocket.
