Since you don't want a crappy old PC you could have less than 200 (and have a metric F ton of data you can store in it) in and have it do so much more (IMHO) than spending on something like this to achieve your results:

Yes but I am not going to have another PC to hookup, install and maintain etc just to have access to those drives. That is stupid in my situation. I just need to be able to access the drives. It's very simple and all I needed was a response to my OP; not what the other guy is saying 'Uneducated'.

I couldn't care less about elaborate setups. I have a life to live. I prefer to spend my time eating good food, having sex and enjoying my life. Not sitting at a PC thinking of the next elaborate way to spend my time ... sitting at a desk. Word.

If the NAS drive is connected to a router it requires the internet to be accessed from anywhere in the world. Anywhere in the world means the internet.

I have a WD my Book Duo which allows you to either:
Use Raid 1, so the drives are mirrored = Less capacity

Use Raid 0, Drives are striped = SPEEEEEED

Use JBOD, Drives are seperate = The way you want it.

 

I've been using this thing for 2 Years now without any problems. It's pretty solid and mine came with two WD Red drives, which are 24/7 approved.

Isn't JBOD where it spans the data across all the drives? All drives are seen as one drive, so should a drive fail... bye bye data?

No, thats Raid 0. JBOD  should treat them as individuals.

I suppose at this rate I might just be better off buying external enclosures for 3.5 drives with power switches on the front and duck taping the lot together and having separate cables run into the PC from them.....

But the OP wanted to add his own drives, many drives.  I agree this is good for a NAS/LAN storage but he wanted to use a bunch of old drives. 

 

A NAS can only be accessed if its connected to a LAN or WAN by another computer.  Or you can call it another PC, or a USB drive can be used in the exact same way.  There are so many options .

JBOD is NOT how you described. I have 4 drives but even with 2 drives JBOD does the same thing. It will make Windows see them as one large drive and it will span the data across both drives.

Nope, as far as i can see it we are both correct as there are two JBOD modes. A spanned and a unspanned mode. Spanned is the way you describe it and unspanned the way i describe it, which is also called "Vanilla-JBOD".

 

So again, how many drives do you actually want to use?
