Hi, I just built a new computer and while playing games (both Fortnite, League of Legends and Black Ops 4) i get random freezes lasting about 5-20 seconds. This occurs 2-5 times every hour and is both concerning and frustrating. My temps are fine. Running a 1070 ti with a i5 9600k,

a 850W psu, 500g 2,5’’ ssd, z370 and 16gb ddr4.

I have overclocked the cpu in bios with standard turbo boost overclocking. I played with overclocking the gpu aswell, but due to lack of sufficient time to get the clockspeeds completely in order i didnt wanna bother with it now and uninstalled both msi afterburner and asus tweak 2. Might it be possible that some overclocked settings are left behind from after the overclock?

Another issue im having is that launching Fortnite (idk about the other games yet) makes alt+tabbing and other processes really laggy and slow. I wouldnt expect this from a $2k+ computer with all new parts. The computer also doesnt run very smoothly right after boot, such as im used to on my MacBook Pro 2012 with obviosly far worse components.

Whats wrong with my computer?

Edit: I think its worth noting that during freezes audio and other apps run smoothly. Moving the mouse also works as usual. Only the actual game and keyboardcommands «slow down». However when computer is launching games etc, sometimes spotify streaming may freeze for 1-3 sec.

I'm guessing you installed all the necessary drivers for your PC? If not I would start from there.

Try different OC settings for the CPU.

You only have a ssd?

To be an expert is to know more about less.

I installed driver for gpu, keyboard and mouse. What else?

Yes, only ssd. One for Windows and one for macOS. 500GB is enough for me, as most random files go on the macOS one and i only install games on the Windows one.

So 500GB ssd for macOS and windows like two 250GB per partition or?

Install motherboard (audio, lan, chipset ect. ) drivers and also install ssd driver.

Do I really need to install drivers for my motherboard, ssd and chipset?

That could be the problem which is making your pc sttuter. In my experience one of the drivers cause the problem.

It won't be drivers, people always say it is drivers, it isn't. Can you try another PSU with just one stick of ram and no GPU?

i7 10700k @ 5.05 Ghz

MSI 1070TI titanium

Corsair H100i pro XT 240mm

MSI z490 tomahawk

16 Gb (2 x 8 GB) Patriot Viper Steel - 4000mhz - 16-16-16-34

No, i bought these parts only and no friends who i can borrow from.

i also think the problem might be the ram...

Sounds more like PSU, my old PC freezed when playing and I opened a second program, as soon as i change it it was all good. Try another PSU maybe a local dealer.

There are many different parts of a computer and each needs different drivers to function correctly in the OS.

Sometimes the lagging can indeed be caused not by a bad driver but by the lack of a driver entirely for that OS function.

From what I have seen personally in the past though this sort of lagging is usually caused by the lack of the chipset driver particularly.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

Now that does not mean that chipset driver IS the issue.

It could be the PSU -though more likely than not -IF it was the PSU... the computer would more likely than not shut the system down completely instead of just stuttering.

If the RAM is in single mode -one stick of 16GB -it could indeed be the RAM.

Being in single mode instead of in dual mode on the motherboard could slow the response down and stall it a bit.

Another zany and probably wrong idea:

I doubt it could be the issue but maybe try adding a mechanical hard drive to slow the system response time down a bit.

Maybe the computer could be responding so fast that the computer and or program is literally tripping over itself.

If this was a normal hard drive and not a SSD I would say check the hard drive for errors via Crystal Disk Info 8.0.0.

All the drivers on my computers are updated, I have now checked.

The stuttering is only with the actual games, most of the time (i think all the time) i can alt tab out of the game if another tab is open, and everything else runs smoothly until the game unfreezes.
