Flat power cable?

Chronified
 Share

Not pc related, but power cable related.

I'm looking for a flat power cable. One that I can close a door on. I live in an apartment and I don't want to leave a door/window open a crack to have my xmas lights extension cord out to the balcony. A power cable that's flat would be nice because then I can just run it under the door.

Any recommendations? Not sure what they're actually called. When I search "flat extension cord" on Amazon I find cables with low profile plugs.

Thanks in advance.

That may be the thinnest new cable you can find. What I linked is 16 AWG. I imagine it would be difficult to find an 18 AWG cable, but it would be thinner and should still be sufficient depending on the number and power draw of lights you have. I know my grandfather has a couple really old extension cords that are really thin and almost certainly would work. Maybe try finding something used and older?

You won't find much thinner power cables, due to various safety regulations.

Cables without earth wire have to be double insulated, each insulation must have a specific thickness so babies and animals won't die if they start chewing on cable,  there must be some powder (flame retardant) between the two insulation layers.

The thinnest would probably have AWG20 or AWG18 (same thickness as the wires of your psu).

Distributors of electronic components have loads of such power cables, for example see this link :  LINK

I pre-filtered the list to contain only AWG18 cables - you can further filter to show only cables that have a specific connector or just loose wires on the other end (so you can install your own mains socket or hack a extension cord to solder the end of the wires instead of original cables in extension cord.
