I'm running:

16GB DDR3

Asus Z97-K (2012) motherboard

GTX 1060 G1 Gaming (6GB)

I7 4790K - 3.6GHZ (by default, can go up to 4.0GHZ)

500GB SSD

However, my performance in games is worse than other people with the same card, most notably Fortnite as I run a 144Hz ASUS monitor and want to be able to maintain a constant 144Hz while playing. I usually get around 144 Constant in calm situations but when there is a lot going on on-screen it dips to around 100/120, unlike the videos I've watched where people using the same GPU and a lower-end CPU as mine have a much higher FPS.

A friend of mine has told me it might be a motherboard bottleneck, is this true or are any other hardware components of my system holding me back.

Regards, Leon.

A what?

Have you compared the settings you're running with the people in the videos? Most likely they're using competitive settings.

Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.9 Ghz  | Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 |  PaliT GTX 1050Ti  |  8gb Kingston HyperX Fury @ 2933 Mhz  |  Corsair CX550m  |  1 TB WD Blue HDD

Inside some old case I found lying around.

I run competitive settings as well.

Also on High they get around 70-80FPS and I get around 50-60FPS

My motherboard is quite old, 2012 so I'm wondering whether or not it would have an effect on my performance...

It shouldn't.

Are their CPU's OC'd?

I doubt it, they would state it

...

That's one thing you could try.

u need to get msi afterburner installed along with riva tuner statistics server, go into afterburner settings - monitoring and enable gpu and cpu usage to be displayed in the OSD and see if either your cpu or processor is maxing 100%. if not, it could be a number of things.

this also depends if your graphic settings in game completely match your friends. is your cpu the exact same as your friends also?

protip for boosting fps in games/getting rid of stutters during intense situations. turn shadows and post processing to the lowest possible settings. ive never understood why people max shadows in shooters. it kills framerate and can overheat the card more than any other graphics setting not to mention how the f do u see people? lol

could also be a silly driver issue (not nvidia specific) you can try running iobit driver booster or snappy driver installer origin to check for driver updates.

could be a wonky cable as well thats going from the monitor to the gfx card, but since u can actually hit the 144 frames, i don't think so.
