Mic port on laptops kills MIC

Stupidly not realising before i got my usb to audio adapter, anything thats a mic plugged into my laptop port kills the mic, Idk why or how but it does. I have bought 3 mics and not realising this. i hope the mics will work when i get the usb adapter
