BSOD - can only access UEFI

Teonalei
Go to solution Solved by SupaKomputa,

hmmm i'm out of options.

the last option would be to stick another cpu in it. assuming the cpu is broken.

and maybe its the motherboard.

I put together my computer myself about 8 months ago, and its been running flawlessly since then. Tonight while i was gaming (gaming all day, but the cpu temp seemed to be alright) i had a BSOD. When i start my computer, it boots into the "safe boot" screen where all i can do is press f1 to enter uefi. I tried to set my system to its base settings (since i overclocked it a bit) but that isn't helping. After the uefi the computer goes straight into another BSOD and restarts itself, this time not displaying anything on the monitor.

So now im stuck between the computer going into the safe mode screen, going into uefi, after leaving uefii get BSOD, restarting  and not displaying. Or trying to go into the repair tool, getting BSOD, computer restart without displaying.

Error code?

After i leave UEFI i get this message to give to support:

KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED

System info:

Windows 10 64bit

Asus z270 ix code

Corsair veangence 32 gb ram (2x16)

Coolermaster 750W psu

Intel i7 7700k

Samsung 850 evo 1tb SSD

GTX 1080ti (asus)

UEFI version: 2.17.1246 / BIOS 1203 x64

Edit (s):

I've tried booting up on my windows install flash drive, and the behavior is the same.

Tested both of the ram sticks for themselves, no change in behavior.

Tried unplugging the SSD, and just starting the system connected to the boot usb, no change in behavior.

Same as before, the Graphics card didnt change anything.

Something.

Have you tried setting your UEFI to defaults, clearing CMOS or reflashing it all together?  Are you able to enable the Compatibility Support Module (CSM) in your UEFI?  It will attempt to boot using legacy BIOS code.

@ShredBird @SupaKomputa

Just flashed the bios, and now its stuck in a new loop.

Starting up,(sometimes) starting the repair tool, BSOD and restarting. And sometimes it just doesnt restart in the BSOD (even tho it says its gonna)

This time im getting other messages aswell: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - - - BAD_POOL_HEADER

Looking at micosoft's website it must be a driver or a memory issue.

Something.

I've tried booting up on a USB with the win10 installer, and im getting to the ROG screen but thats as far as it goes. No "processing" markings, just a black screen with the ROG logo/text on it.

Something.

This is where I would start reducing your configuration as far as possible.  Use the fewest amount of components/peripherals.  One stick of RAM, boot drive, one mouse, one keyboard (or just a keyboard) and see if the issue persists.

unplug everything, start bare minimum : CPU - 1 stick of memory - gpu

then reset bios to default (f7), restart

then in bios change sata mode to ahci.

plug the usb installer and start.

if installer loaded ok, restart, plug the hdd  (1 hdd only) you want to install windows

If windows installed properly then start adding more memory one piece at a time.

reboot after succesful login and plug any hardware one by one.

If you cannot find any faulty hardware, then the last windows installation was corrupted.

if everything ok, play around with some benchmarking software to check the system stability.

@SupaKomputa

Do you mean (f5)? F7 toggles between "advanced" and "EZ" mode.

The sata mode was already set to AHCI.

When i plug in the usb it brings me to a black screen with the ROG logo/text.

Something.

yeah different motherboard different key.

try different memory stick at a time.

one of your memory might cause the problem.

press tab when the rog logo appear at boot (to hide the wallpaper), or disable boot wallpaper in bios.

examine any error in the boot screen.

@Twomuch If you already disable boot logo, no need to press tab.

anything odd in the bios boot screen?

have you properly burn the windows installer image to usb?

use software like rufus to burn the image.

remember, you don't need the hdd plugged this time.

What happen after the boot screen?

Do you get "press any button to install windows"?

If not then the usb disk may not be properly burned.

Also you can run memtest64 to check the memory integrity.

ok that confirms the usb disk failed to boot.

burn the usb disk properly with rufus.

check this page for detailed tips:

An ISO image is a packed files, same as a zip.

Inside you'll get all the files you need.

ISO is more optimized for burning to cd.

You can unpack an ISO with 7zip.

Anyway what stage are you right now?

have you tried this :

https://www.lifewire.com/download-windows-10-2626215

Or after you downloaded, in "Select which media you want to use" screen, select ISO file instead of usb drive.

This will convert your downloaded files to ISO.
After ISO created then you can use rufus.

Go to bios and enable UEFI mode.

In boot selection, select the usb drive, or "windows uefi bla bla bla".

If no usb drive appeared, the usb drive is not detected by the bios.

another option is to press F9 while booting and select either:

- windows uefi bla bla bla...

- the usb stick drive.

If the bios cannot detect the installer, then it should say:

"no bootable drive ... ..."

If this appeared then the bios cannot boot from that particular usb stick.

This is normal, not all usb are compatible, you can burn the iso to another usb and try.

In my case i have a spare 20gb hdd from old xbox.

Burn the iso to that drive, install in sata slot and load the installer from there.

Worked all the time.

If you still have a DVD burner, then go old school and burn the ISO to a dvd.

http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-create-windows-10-bootable-dvd/

Booting from dvd have better success rate than usb stick.

@SupaKomputa

It does show up, and its the same USB i used to install it last time. It shows up as a "UEFI: USB stick name" and a "USB stick name" both leading into a bare booting screen.

Guess this means ill have to try another usb?

Thats odd, after that no warning? It should warn to from missing bootable drive.

Upgrade the latest bios, if not work, downgrade the bios 2 version down.

Test the memory with memtest64.

If still problem, you may have a bad motherboard.

@SupaKomputa

Updated the Bios earlier, so ill try and downgrading it.

If downgrading the bios doesnt work, is there any way to confirm that its the motherboard, or is that confirmed by it not working with the usb?

Its basicly this screen i get to all the time.
