Hmmm, you could try setting it to Router #1 and see what happens

Hey everyone, I've been having some networking problems lately, and the layout of my building does not help with making things easy. In the past I have not had any networking problems until I had to buy a new router (a netgear nighthawk x6 r7900) and it has given me headaches since I got it. The problems I have been having are frequent dropouts/disconnects/lag during gaming (heroes of the storm and wow). And even buffering while streaming from my plex server to my xbox and TVs. I've never had issues with plex before.

My setup is as follows: Internet > Modem > Router#1(Asus RT-AC66U_B1) > Router#2(Netgear NighthawkX6 R7900) > Router #3 Belkin Router Configured as an access point

Router #2 is the connection I use from my pc to game (wirelessly). my media server is on a wired connection to the router #2 as well.

Routers 2 and 3 also serve iPhones, iPads, TVs, xbox, laptops, etc.

The reason there are so many routers involved is because of the building I live in. router #1 is on our main floor. Routers #2 an #3 are two stories up, and too far away from router #1. Again, this setup has only given me problems since i got the router #2, the nighthawk. I'm thinking about returning it as I've tried changing every single setting in the damn thing but to no avail. I'm thinking that there is something above my head that i'm missing which is why i'm here for help!

You've disable NAT, DHCP, and other router functions on Router #2 so it's more like a wireless AP with a switch?

I've disabled nat, but not DHCP as I still wanted it to be assigning IPs for all of our devices

Are those IP addresses being assigned by Router #2 overlapping with Router #1 or are they on a different subnet?

They are on the same subnet but a completely different set of IPs

Who is set as the default gateway for each set?

The local router or the same router for both sets?

Each set of IP addresses

So those being assigned by both routers, is the gateway the same?

The gateway for router #1 is left blank, i'm assuming the gateway in that case is my modem? or my ISP itself, comcast? the gateway for router #2 my nighthawk is the IP address of router #1

And just to be clear we're on the same page, when you go to a client connected to Router #2 and issue ipconfig from the command prompt, the default gateway listed is the IP address of router #1 right?

Yah, give that a shot and see what happens. If it doesn't work you should still be able to access the router and change it back.

Ok all done and i still have internet. how i did it was by going to 'change adapter settings' > right click to properties > selected ipv4 and hit porperties again> then went to the advanced area > then added router #1 as my gateway

Cool, I guess now we'll have to wait and see if you get dropouts or other issues.
