Cheapest Plex Powerhouse Build? (Dual CPU)

Hi Everybady!!!

 

I'm feeling like a project and was looking to upgrade my spare Plex server to something with a bit more of a kick (My current spare Plex is dedicated solely to my Floatplane downloads, "Prometheus" in my signature).

 

What would you guys recommend for a dual Xeon machine? (the more cores the better!)

 

I'm thinking 8 cores per CPU and dual socket, but have never built anything with a dual socket (do the motherboards fit in normal cases?).

 

I'd say all in, I'd be looking around £300 for Mobo, CPU's and RAM, and I'm more than happy to buy used from eBay.

you can get old dual socket servers quite cheap used. just be aware that these things are LOUD. put it in a spare room or something.

you can check for X79 Xeons but the boards are quite expensive

i got some guys as a reference for old xeons

@Zando Bob and @WhisperingKnickers for X58 Xeons

@CUDA_Cores for X99 Xeons

and myself for X79

Yep yep yep, @WhisperingKnickers will be your guy for dual socket X58 boards and CPUs (which are cheap enough to fit in your budget), but X58 Xeons max out at 6c/12t.

I can live with 6c/12t  @WhisperingKnickers what's the likelihood of a dual CPU board fitting in a "normal" case?

just personal opinion it would be awesome but be sure to find a motherboard that fits perfectly in your case while can contain 2 CPUs

It would effectively be a new build, so I'd be ok buying a huge case if I had too. Just so long as I could have it in an actual tower...

 

...although now I think about it...maybe I could use it in my main rig? Think a dual CPU board would fit inside a BeQuiet Silentbase 600?

i have seen ATX boards that is dual Socket boards, but i don't know if somewhere around you

Most dual socket boards fit in a normal case  for quite a while I had a EATX motherboard in a NZXT S340 which is a mid tower. Just look for the form factor and make sure it is somewhat standard. (Also I might have one for sale if you want it)

It isn't a problem to do this. This weekend I even managed to get a HPTX motherboard in a mid tower. HPTX is the largest sized motherboard in the consumer line. it is about three inches taller than ATX and about twice as wide

Oh lol for some reason I read it as W-L
