Gtx 1080 or 1070

khazad

So the was a sale for a gigabyte 1080, it was at 499.99 I wanted to buy it now so I've checked it and it went up to 624... Crap.

I've been checking other 1080 on Amazon and saw the EVGA ftw at 559 I don't know if this is still a good deal or not. So should I get this?

I have a 1080p 114hz monitor, before all the mining thing I was planning on buying a new PC, and I anted to buy a MSI gtx 1070 gaming x but now with the mining thing I can't see any good offer. But now that the etherum mining is finally going down I just saw an EVGA 1070 SC at 459... I've wanted to buy the gigabyte 1080, I've prepared everything and now I don't know what to do lol get the 1080 or 1070.

With the 1080 I'll have future proof, it'll still be Overkill for my system but probably I'll have a chance to buy a 1440p ~100-144hz monitor in the future.

wait for vega fe and volta, it's 2-3 months out in the future

expect better price/performance (as older cards will be cheaper, miners might stop and resell at stupidly low prices)

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Does your Monitor has Freesync or G-Sync?

A GTX 1080 is NOT Overkill for 1080p, as long you have 144 Hz. 60 Hz mist likely :P

A 1070 will NOT be able to deliver you 144 fps in modern titles, at least not in Ultra settings.

As a 1440p / 144 Hz / G-Sync + GTX 1080 user, let me tell you... A 1080 is WAY too underpowered for this, tbh.

In Ghost Recon Wildlands maxed out, my GTX 1080 barely hits 50 fps. By just standing around after the Intro. Not even action going on, or driving around.

You can't have enough GPU power tbh. Absolutely not possible. You can ALWAYS bring a GPU down to it's knees. Even if you rock a GTX 1080 ti in Sli.

@ Thread: Buy when you need it. Period. MAYBE wait those 3 weeks for Vega, if you have Freesync. If not, go for GTX 1080 if you can afford it.

Would you rather wait for play and have fun? ;-)

And no, do NOT wait for volta. it will NOT come in 2-3 months. Bullshit. It won't come out untill either very end of the Year, or more like next year. Nvidia has no reason to release Volta early. Why would they? AMD is no competition.

If Vega doesn't wreck a GTX 1080 ti AIRcooled, they "lost". Their only chance would be, offering similar performance like the 1080 for lower Price (which will be difficult, because HBM2 is very expensive), or performance between 1080 and 1080 ti for 1080 price.

Otherwise nope.

That said, if you don't ignore Performance / Watt ;)

In MY Opinion: I would honestly not buy a 300 Watt vega, if it has the same performance as a 180 Watt GTX 1080... Not for the same Price.

The Vega is crap. It's a $1000 card that can't outperform a GTX 1080. Don't bother with it, and don't wait for it to drive down prices because it won't do that anytime soon.

The lower-priced GTX 1080s are ~$550, while the lower-priced 1070s are ~$475. If you need a new video card now, then there's no reason to not buy a 1080 (if you're buying a $500 video card $75 likely isn't a deal breaker).

Alternately, you can wait until black Friday sales. By then, the lower-priced 1070s will hopefully drop back down to their usual price in the $350 range with a potential sale price on top of that driving it closer to $300. This might not happen, though.

For a 1070 i was planning to spen $380-90, and for the price that it's right now i'll be paying a lot more (well they went out of stock again on amazon), so yeah, if i'm going to spend $450+ id better get a 1080, i saw the Gigabyte 1080 windforce drop to $499.99 again 3 hours ago, i just checked it again and it's at $624, i think the universe doesn't want me to buy a new pc lol.

It doesn't have any, it's the VG248QE.

I'm not planning on playing on ultra settings, well, at least i'll keep the AA at x2 or x4 and that's about it.

I have everything ready, what i only need is the motherboard and the GPU, i'm waiting for the motherboard to drop it's price. And for the GPU, i saw the Gigabyte 1080 at $499, and since it was the only one with a reasonable price i wanted to buy it. I don't wanna spend $600 on a GPU. I'm a bit tight on money, the EVGA 1080 SC is at $559 on amazon, but like i said, i don't know if it's a good deal, if it is i'll think about it or wait and see if the Gigabyte drops again.
