New laptop for everyday use

Hello,

I am looking for a laptop that I can use daily, but not only for facebook and youtube, :)

I want to learn programming languages and software like photoshop and I would like a laptop that would not struggle with that.

Is US$700 too much for what I want?

Please help me

Would you be interested in getting a desktop instead?

I want to learn programming and stuff on the go, so I don't need a desktop.

Well a desktop is way cheaper for the same amount of performance, but if you want to save space and have the portability option, $700 will get you a decent machine.

Just for simple programming, a i5 7200u/i3 7100u will give you good performance. I have a thinkpad incoming so if you want to have my thoughts on it, tell me and i message you when i finally have it. The legend says that they are build like a tank and they would fit your needs and price bracket

Depends on your priorities, do you want more ultrabook style (thin and light), or portable workstation (powerful, but heavier)? Do you also have some special requirements like color accurate screen, special keyboard, port selection, CD rom... ?

I prefer the ultrabook style, I think no special requirements are needed.

The UX305 is awesome, but what is the processor and ram needed for photoshop and programming?

I'm just trying to understand where begins the line that works rubbish and the line which maybe is too much.

For programming, you should focus mainly on cpu, don't worry about the ram. I do programming for 4 years and my IDE with running programs never needed more than few hundred megs of ram. The photoshop uses as much as you throw at it and again, 4 or 8 gigs are enough for light photoshop (I assume you don't do large size, multi layer photoshop, which would consume even 32 gigs). The cpu on the ux 305 is dual core i5, which is enough ( again depends on how heavy your work will be). For programming, the i5 is no problem, you can take a look at a thread I recently started about laptop cpus for programming, because I also want some laptop to school and programming :)

I use a 5 year old laptop for university stuff and will soon learn Java. I assume my i7 2670qm will do the job? I got this one but he doesn't boost higher than 2,60 GHz with all cores used https://ark.intel.com/de/products/53469/Intel-Core-i7-2670QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_10-GHz

It will easily. Older, but has good clock speed and has 4 cores. You could do programming on almost any cpu, but slower ones would have high compiling times and less cores are worse for multithreaded programs, so yes it is enough.
