Not many GPU's with a reference cooler.. cool well?

I can only think of a handful of reference cooler designs that did a good job of keeping a GPU cool.

 

Nvidia's 9800GTX+ cooler was amazing.

GTX 280. Amazing.

GTX 480... may as well tie the sun to it for a better cooler.

GTX 600 series reference was ok until you touched 1 mhz of an OC... furnace.

HD 7000 series... comparable to GTX 480 in terms of noise.

R9 290x reference.. worse than GTX 480 reference and even throttled.

HD 4870, loud and hot, even reviewers noted it.

4890, same as 4870 a little better on noise.

4850, single slot, ran warm, whiny little fan.

HD 5000 series, quiet until you OC, good cooler.

HD 6000, loud.

 

Discounting any dual GPU cards for serious reasons.. a bit unfair.

 

No experience of other reference type cards since i have bought aftermarket varients of other cards.

Define 'good job of keeping a GPU cool'. Where does the line run?

I have only used 1 card with reference cooler: The HD 7970. I'm sure something's wrong with the QC, since the fan sounds like a big diesel engine starting up.

Reference coolers are designed to be the bare minimum required at stock clocks as to not take away sales from aftermarket solutions.
