4K TV and new xbone scorpio?

Majestic_Koala

So as im now a uni student one thing i want to buy is a new TV, my old 720p LG TV i have had in my room for wayyyy over 10 years now and now i a time for an upgrade

So i was thinking, should i buy a new 4K TV at a lower cost AND the new scorpio since it can stream 4k movies and some games (i think) or would it be better to buy a better 4k TV and use something else to stream Netflix in 4K

I have a decent PC so i dont really game much on consoles any more hence why i came up with this dilemma, help would be appreciated and suggestions of good TVs would help. Please make sure that they are no bigger than 55"

Thanks

You want the ShitBox just to playback 4k Netflix? Most 4k Smart TVs can do that themselves.

take that as you wish but i'd totally advice against buying an Xbox. I bought a One S myself (for 4k Bluray though) and i totally hate it. #PCMR

If you already have a decent PC, then I would recommend investing more in a TV or just saving your money. Most 4k tvs are smart TVs that have built in apps to stream content over, and in the unlikely event that your tv does not, I would recommend the chromecast ultra.

The only advantage an Xbox would give you is if you're looking to play 4K HDR BluRay discs, but they're very limited currently and expensive, and you could just buy an Xbox S model for it.

should've bought a kaby lake core i7 to get 4k Netflix (you also should switch to edge as your primary browser) and also faster windows updates

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

hdr = high dynamic range

something something colour depth

4k UHD just means 2160p

HDR means High Dynamic Range and makes your colours and contrasts look nicer on machines, sources and screens that support it.

Ultra HD is just another name for 4k

Well HDR is better when your PC/XBOX/Player supports it.

If you are getting a TV now i'd get one that is HDR capable.

ugh okay. Ya know, if there actually was a 4k bluray drive for PC then i'd have gotten a whole new PC instead of that POS Xbox. Even though it would've like 3x the money.

HDR is mostly about contrast - the difference between lights and blacks, and a wider color gamut. thus allowing brighter highlights, darker blacks, more vivid colors, etc. i could give you an image to represent the effects of HDR, but sadly there's not much around that best simulate what it brings. this image comes close though

HDR vs. SDR

HDR is on the left; SDR on the right

remember that proper HDR master maintains the overall luminance of the picture from regular SDR. with the move to HDR, highlights are much more detailed, and colors are more believable. that is roughly the majority of the changes you ought to see. so really HDR compounds the "wow!" factor where it matters most, such as subtle scenes like that simulated image
