IMHO nothing is overkill for 3440x1440...that's quite a bit of pixels to push and especially if you have a 100hz monitor?

what monitor exactly do you have?

i'd say if you can afford a 1080 why not...otherwise a 1070 is still a nice upgrade to a 390x...

Otherwise, your board support crossfire...you could also purchase a new PSU and get another 390x on the cheap...depending on how you'd feel running dual high power requirements GPU's...and also depending on cost...if a PSU and a 390X is going to cost as much as a 1070...considering you get money for selling your 390x...you know...i think it's probably best for you to sell the 390X and a get the GTX 1080 with the money...

Hi guys!

I currently have a i7 4790 and a r9 390X in my rig and I want to know if there is any benefits of upgrading motherboard and CPU to either a 7600K or a 7700K

setup at the moment is below

I'm think of watercooling aswell maybe so any advice is appreciated

thanks guys!

CPU: Intel core i7 4790; MoBo: MSI Z97 Gaming edition; RAM: G-skill sniper series 16GB (2x8GB) 1866GHz; GPU: MSI Radeon R9 390X 8GB; Storage: Crucial 250GB SSD + WD 1TB HDD; PSU: Corsair CS 750; OS: Windows 10

yes, the cooler would be adaptable to the new socket as intel has not changed the mount.

no, there wouldn't be a major benefit from upgrading to a 7700k. the IPC change is minimal, you're better off with getting a 4790k (or just wait for cannon lake and see the improvements and if its worth it or not)

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Your current system is good as it is now, the cooler can be used on other sockets too but I wouldn't recommend you to upgrade your CPU nor Cooler because the performance gain you will get won't be big. Just wait for the new cannon lake and see what the performance will be with the new one.

No point in upgrading the CPU, you're not being CPU limited.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

Stick with that you have, you got a good CPU/GPU combo there, if it was me maybe a larger SSD for storagfe if you have an upgrade itch, but wait a gen/tick at least for Ryzen

if its around skylake, don't do it. again, minimal performance bump for $500+ (cpu, ram, motherboard, and possibly cooling needs to be changed)

As I said, only if you have an upgrade itch :D

But ye a 512gb 960 pro would be nice, use the 250gb for a few games etc

But there aint much point in swapping your CPU at this point, my 4790k is still ploughing everything I through at it

thanks for the advice also I've updated my highly out of date signature setup. yeah I'm impressed at my 4790 despite it being locked it still runs fine for CS:GO and GTAV(although GTAV online is starting to have huge frame drops from time to time (~60fps down to 40 and back up).

I've always looked at the 960pro so I'll look for sales on it. Thanks stealth

Really don't see the point in upgrading CPU it'll benefit you so little, better of putting that money into a better GPU.

I have a similar system and am happy with it. Not thinking of upgrading anything (except maybe a new SSD) until Vega comes out.

I'm guessing you're playing 1080P? Those frame drops seem normal, I play 1440P at max settings and can sit anywhere between 100 FPS and 65 FPS, thank NVidia for Gsync!

none what so ever...the i5-7600K is a downgrade and the 7700K is a small upgrade, not worth your time and money.

If you want more performance in games then upgrade your GPU, if you want a noticeably more capable CPU work a worstation environment look at X99 6c/12t CPU's like the i7-6800K for example.

changing ur i7 for an i5 ? hell no. you will downgrade...

The 4790 is better than any kaby lake i5 due to hyper threading.. 8 thread..
