PSU Noise

Arche

Hi, all!

I recently finished putting together my first build, and got my PC finally set up. The morning after the initial installation, I turn it on (maybe it's third boot), and heard some intermittent clicking coming from the PSU that I had not heard prior. It was not very loud – almost unnoticeable. I eventually powered off the PC and turned it back on again to find the noise had stopped. There is still some very slight noise come from it, but I'm assuming that is just the machine working as it's impossible for it to be completely silent. Is this a cause for concern? Should I RMA, or am I being overly paranoid?

Model: EVGA SuperNova G2 550W

Mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty H170

I still know very little when it comes to PC's and would just like to know if my concern is justified. There are no other problems with PC performance. Games/software run fine, temps are healthy, and there are no signs of any electrical interference/heat. Also, I'd like to add that every time I turn the PC on/off there is a click that comes from the PSU, but I have read that is normal for the most part. Any help would be appreciated in the way of tests I can run before turning it in! Was quite nerve wracking setting up all the cables, and I'd like to know whether or not it'd be worth the trouble going through the who process of sending it back.

Thanks. :)

Could you record the noise and put it on youtube or find another way for the forum members to hear it? Your PSU is very good, so I don't know why it would do that.

Certainly! Please excuse my fumbling with the phone. I have just plugged everything back in and started it up, there's no apparent noise now whatsoever. At least not that I'm aware of. If the clicking were only momentary, what could it have been?

Edit: I am aware that it may just be paranoia. Heh.

The clicking often comes from rapid power cycling. There are tons of reasons it might make a small click (my system does when I resume it from sleep or turn it on) but it's nothing to worry about.

Would just like to bump this thread and update that strange sounds have returned. They aren't loud enough to be picked up by a mic, though, and the power LED to my PC has been flickering. Is this normal, or should I really consider RMA while I'm still under warranty? Any input would be appreciated.

EDIT: I'd also like to add the LED only seems to really flicker/blink when I open processes like Photoshop and play games. I went to go check my power connectors, one was not connected entirely, and even then it is still doing this.

Thanks! :]
