monitor issue

got a monitor for free a 23" samsung b3220 it's 1080p the only issue I have found with it is it dosen't work with some cables it has dvi and vga but It won't output for those but if i were to use a hdmi to dvi adapter it works fine anyone know why

Are you sure the outputs were not out of range or frequency and stuff
Set your pc resolution to 800x600 or whatever its lowest is, you can also change the bits used to express the total amount of different colours but I would leave that as it can break things.
