MB Heatsink

Can you remove the MB Heatsink if its in the way for a GPU. I think my MB heatsink is to high for a new GPU, so should it work to remove it or like moddify it shorter??

I dont have a own built PC, mine is a Lenovo Erazer x310 and im planning to upgrade it.

Im gonna get the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB Mini ITX, i dont know the name of the MB but it looks like this:
