Good investment for my future?

It really depends on what you'll use it for.

I prefer a powerful desktop and an inexpensive laptop for simple programming and word processing.

But that laptop is a great deal for $550 compared to a desktop of similar specs., especially if you put an SSD in it

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

Yeah that's seems like a decent buy, especially with an SSD. Plus I think it looks great too (if that matters to you.)

Well I intend to have many applications running as well as have the luxury that I can play a game once in a while and not have to worry too much and between work and school I'm never home very much so my desktop just sits there collecting dust actually the ssd is from my desktop but did a little research and said it would fit in the laptop so that was a nice surprise

Would i be crazy to suggest also looking into a used thinkpad w530/w540 or a dell m6700/m6600/m4600/m4700 as you can get quad cores and 32gb ram and upgradeable gpus for the same price.

That laptop won't last that long - Acer have horrible heat issues on their Aspire series - get something used or save up a bit more else you are just throwing money down the drain

Acer is bad and you should never buy a laptop from them if you want it to last more than a year. Get a used ThinkPad, elitebook or latitude.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Lenovo ThinkPad T450S used - don't mind the used part, ThinkPads are impossible to kill. Ask @Dackzy

The 940M will overheat and throttle down below iGPUs. Any Haswell or Skylake iGPU is as powerful as a 930M but the ThinkPad's build is top of the line. There is not a single laptop available with better build quality. Am not exaggerating - the Magnesium-based allow is extremely sturdy and light.

You are starting to mention me a lot, it's okay if you have crush on me xDxD.

OP good luck killing a ThinkPad, my t420s is 5 years old now and it's only my gpu that is starting to act weird some times, but over the last 5 years the cpu ans gpu have been pushed to 90-100% load everyday 5-6 days a week. I have even dropped it from 8m height because some douchbag pushed me.

If you get an older workstation model, you'll get equal or better graphics performance and superior CPU performance. Something like a W520/W530 or 8560W/8570W would be suitable.
