4770k only 4.1Ghz @1.2 volts with H100i

Arti

I've got a 4770k that can only go on 4.1ghz @1.2 volts (73C-75C on an H100i).... And as far as i know that's not a pretty good frequency for 1.2 volts...

So this is how I overclock: i set a fixed voltage at 1.2 volts and start at a multiplier of 46, then make my way down till it boots (which was 4.3Ghz), and i stress test using folding at home @medium, after that i look for a frequency that's stable for 4 hours while stress testing (which was 4.1Ghz)....

I'm getting around 73C-75C under load and 75C is my maximum threshold and i don't want to exceed that mark....

Is there anything wrong with my overclocking methodology or did I just get a REALLY bad overclocker...?

You might have gotten a bad overclocking chip, try AIDA64 as well for 8 hours and see if its stable, You might be getting high temps cause summer, so soon you might be getting a lot lower.

And once you find your stable frequency with the correct voltage, set it to adaptive voltage and you ll have lower idle temps and all that

Probably a bad chip. Why not use Prime95 for stress testing?

You just lost the cpu you lottery, that's all. the new haswell i7's aren't very good overclockers.

Programs such as AIDA64 and Prime95 overvolts haswell chips to ~1.3volts-1.4volts when set on adaptive (which im using right now) and im not willing to fry my CPU by doing that XD

I guess it could've worked on a fixed voltage when i was overclocking with but ehh ... i think folding @home is just as good of a test cuz it puts your cpu on 100% and i don't think im ever gonna do that, so it's not much of a difference to me.

Besides, i fold all night when im not using my CPU and never experienced and crashes.

Yeah folding is good, cause if that fails then bad oc!

As for aida and prime 95 overvolting, that is correct but you can lower your adaptive V so when it overvolts it only pulls 1.2V. Ive done that with my 4770k, in the bios i have it set to +0.07 ( or something close to that ) so when demanding applications tax my cpu, like cinebench, folding, aida and prime are running, they still only pull 1.109-1.1V that is required for the OC that ive done
