looking for storage advice

hi guys after my last hdd failed i got only 320+160gb hdd left which has my important stuff ,i am looking to get a NAS or build a home server

My current system has only 5 sata ports and 4 of them is occupied

  • NAS is preferred because it is easier to put it somewhere and forget it
  • Device has to have atleast 3 hdd bays and able to backup data (like raid crap which i am not familiar with)
  • I am looking to store atleast 4TB of data (not sure about backups but i would be fine with 3TB data and 3TB backup)
  • also suggest me HDD's that is NOT WD GREENS.
  • will be purchasing off UK or german online stores that ships here 

Budget is MAXIMUM of 1000$ for everything including HDD's and device itself

I know you said you were British/German - but here's one for 999$ with 16TB included and 4 bays

yeah the issue is shipping i will have to pay 200/300$ for shipment once it gets to customs i will have to pay 300$ tax and at the end it will cost me 1500 or 1600$ :( fml

here is something you could do. dump the smallest drive you have and try putting it somewhere safe. you can always put it back in the pc later. (or transfer all unimportant data there)
you will be left with 2 sata ports. here is what I suggest:
get 2 of these in raid 1 http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st3000dm001
you will have 3tb of data and the other 3tb will be the backup of the hardrive

Edit: go to the top right of the web page and change it to UK or whatever fits your needs. you can also use this: 4tb if you really want a NAS : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/hitachi-internal-hard-drive-0s03664

oh. then for less money. why don't you get a motherboard that does support raid ?

what are your pc specs ? I think this would be much better than spending ton of money on a nas

finding a decent (will not invest on a low end shit again) Z77 board is hard and my specs are on profile.

I'm not entirely sure if your 1000 limit is dollars(USD) Euros or pounds, though I assume dollars becuase of the $

The 5N (not 5D) is a NAS with a small foot print, that you can set and forget about.  It does offer drive redundancy (RAID) as per your request.

 

I have the Drobo FS which is a NAS and basically an earlier model of the 5N...and it is 30% off (apparently)
