PC Upgrade

Budget (including currency): CHF 800 (~same as USD)

Country: Switzerland

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: MSFS and Anno 1800 and further less demanding games. Monitor is a 32" 2560x1440.

Other details: Already have an Computer which I'd like to upgrade and re-use most of the hardware possible. The goal would be to get a new CPU and GPU and keep the rest as I think the motherboard can support a better CPU, RAM is sufficent-ish and the PSU can handle a more demanding GPU power wise. CPU Cooler should be able to handle a bit more jeat as well. I am not quite sure what to spend more money on (GPU vs CPU) and which model would be the best bang for the buck. What the build currently looks like (attached as screenshots):

Motherboard: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming (LGA 1151)

CPU: i5 6600K 3,5 GHz

GPU: MSI R9 390 8GB

RAM: HyperX Fury 4x 4GB, DDR4-2133, DIMM 288

PSU: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 (750W)

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock PRO 3

Case: NZXT Noctis 450

Monitor: BenQ EX3203R (32" 2560x1440)

I have everything else already (HDD, SSD, thermal paste, all periphials and so on).

As I'm not as hands-on with what the best parts are today as I used to be, I'd appreciate any help and tipps I can get.

Thanks a lot!

Those seem like 4 year old parts.

The 6600k isn't a really good CPU anymore and that's way too much for it, it will struggle in some games due to the lack of cores.

I'd get something like a 3100 (if you can find one) or for the same price a 3600.

For the GPU, the R9 390 is not an efficient card, but it seems to be quite decent, I wouldn't pay for it more than $100 if used.

Ram wise, 2133 is really slow, I would get something like 3000-3200. also 4 sticks will be quite heavy on the memory controller, 2 8Gb stick would do the job

Main PC [The Rig of Theseus]:

CPU: i5-8600K @ 5.0 GHz | GPU: GTX 1660 | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic | PSU: Corsair RM 650i | SSD: Corsair MP510 480 GB |  HDD: 2x 6 TB WD Red| Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Secondary PC [Why did I bother]:

CPU: AMD Athlon 3000G | GPU: Vega 3 iGPU | RAM: 8 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Corsair 88R | PSU: Corsair VS 650 | SSD: WD Green M.2 SATA 120 GB | Motherboard: MSI A320M-A PRO MAX | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Server [Solution in search of a problem]:

Model: HP DL360e Gen8 | CPU: 1x Xeon E5-2430L v1 | RAM: 12 GB DDR3 1066 MHz | SSD: Kingston A400 120 GB | OS: VMware ESXi 7

Server 2 electric boogaloo [A waste of electricity]:

Model: intel NUC NUC5CPYH | CPU: Celeron N3050 | RAM: 2GB DDR3L 1600 MHz | SSD: Kingston UV400 120 GB | OS: Debian Bullseye

Laptop:

Model: ThinkBook 14 Gen 2 AMD | CPU: Ryzen 7 4700U | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz | OS: Windows 11 Pro

Photography:

Cameras:

Full Frame digital: Sony α7

APS-C digital: Sony α100

Medium Format Film: Kodak Junior SIX-20

35mm Film:

Lenses:

Sony SAL-1870 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6

Sony SAL-75300 75-300mm ƒ/4.5-5.6

Meike MK-50mm ƒ/1.7

PSA: No, I didn't waste all that money on computers, (except the main one) my server cost $40, the intel NUC was my old PC (although then it had 8GB of ram, I gave the bigger stick of ram to a person who really needed it), my laptop is used and the second PC is really cheap.

I like tinkering with computers and have a personal hatred towards phones and everything they represent (I daily drive an iPhone 7, or a 6, depends on which one works that day)

you also don't need a 750W psu for that system.

Anything i've written between the * and * is not meant to be taken seriously.

keep in mind that helping with problems is hard if you aren't specific and detailed.

i'm also not a professional, (yet) so make sure to personally verify important information as i could be wrong.

Thanks a lot for the input.

Just to clarify and to avoid any possible confusion: I habe the above build at home for some years now and would like to upgrade it, spending $800.

Wouldn't it be possible to upgrade to an intel CPU in order to not have to buy a new Motherboard? If you think the RAM needs to be upgraded as well, it would be worth switching to an AMD CPU and upgrade the RAM though.

So the CPU/RAM are the bottleneck rather than the GPU and it would be worthwile investing in them?

I know that the PSU is overpowered, but this was intentional to have a futureproof one which I do not have to worry about.

In this case, what would you guys think about the following upgrade. I'd be especially interested to know the more expensive option would be worth its money or not.

Cheaper Option

  • Ryzen 5 3600
  • ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING
  • RTX 2070S EX OC
  • 2x 8GB DDR4 3200

More expensive option

  • Ryzen 7 3700X
  • Same Motherboard
  • Same GPU
  • 2x 16GB DDR4 3200

As always - Thanks a lot for your help!
