Upgrade To 1080p?

brownninja97

At the moment ive got a Dell monitor which is 21.6inchs and resolution is 1680x1050(dell 2007wfp). Is it worth the upgrade by spending the money(about £130 for a decent one) or should i wait for 4k to roll out. If there are good bang for buck monitors you know about and 25inch is the max as i would then have two screens and i wouldn't have enough space

Going from 1680x1050 to 1080p is not a really big upgrade, but if you really need a new monitor look for the LG IPS panels. They're ridicolously good value.

unless you are looking for more color accurate monitor like a IPS panels, i would keep the 16:10 ration monitor. i had a 1080p monitor and i gave it to my brother and kept my old 1680x1050 monitor because i liked the vertical space that i had with the old monitor. so think about what you want from your new monitor and buy it.

You can get a 16:10 (1920x1200) IPS monitor.

Or you can get the 2560x1440 monitor.

I doubt that the 4K computer monitors will be cheap. I expect them to be at least 1000$ for the IPS version... and who knows if that will be a true 8-bit panel or just a 6-bit panel.

The main problem with 4K, is the GPU power, that we simply don't have for gaming, or at least not a medium settings, I dont' think.

Check out the U2713HM for a really nice 27inch 2560x1440 monitor, if you are intresting in such option.

by waiting for 4k i meant the prices for lower monitors would get cheaper

A nice 1920x1200 monitor is like $300 so that is not bad at all. It will be sometime until 4k arrives and the hardware to run games well, probably even longer

WOWOW wait, firstly im not from usa so i cant get that for that price(£200 fro imports) and in the uk amazon its not sold. Furthermroe ive got £700 for my total build that im about to make. I think hardware comes first as long as your not rocking a CRT

A 1080p monitor has more vertical space than a 1680x1050.

The 16:10 vs 16:9 vertical screen space advantage is only a factor when moving to a another screen with the same horizontal resolution but different aspect ratio. For instance somebody moving from a 1920x1200 screen would feel the loss when a given a 1920x1080 screen because he has less vertical real estate. I currently use a 1440x900 monitor which is 16:10 aspect ratio. I will be moving to a 1920x1080 monitor soon and the aspect ratio change isn't an issue, I am getting more screen real estate both vertically and horizontally- either way it's an upgrade.

Damn they really are, I just searched em up and I'm so considering buying one!

Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?

agreed ultrasharps are awesome but dell do shove quite the price tag on them which isnt good in my opinion as it's very high compared to others however there is that quality side they have. I mean ive mean using my dell monitor for 6 years day in day out and it hasnt shows any signs of weakness.

Hmmm, I bought them for about 150 euros each, which seemed pretty decent as a price.

My advice to you would be; definitely upgrade to 1080p if your graphics card(s) are up to the mark in regards to performance at that resolution, the last thing you want to do is upgrade and regret it so make sure you do the research with your rig and certain games you'd like to max out in the future. Hope this helps!

It's obviously going to be a long time before performance mainstream single graphics cards can drive games at 4K resolutions with 60fps maxed out. On a related note it's also the reason that I am going to buy a 1080p monitor rather than a 1440p. I can save up and buy a good IPS 1440p but after looking at it I don't think I can afford the annual GPU costs associated with driving games at that resolution. So I decided to I would settle for a very smooth experience at 1080p for the next couple of years or so.

Humbug, yes... but only 30px more, I think that is his point.

Yeah I'm not trying to say it's worth the upgrade. I was merely responding to the statement that a 1680x1050 monitor had more vertical space than a 1080p monitor.
