Does this Router Exist?

fencingdude101

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a switch, but not sure what to look for. My plan is to have a 10 gigabit switch to connect a few computers together, but then have a 10 gigabit line come from that router to another switch, but have that connect via 1 gigabit connections.

So more simply, I want a switch that has one 10 gigabit connection and, let's say, 8-12 1 gigabit connections to connect to the other switch.

Maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough, but where would I find that? Let me know if anyone needs more info.

Thank you!

Sounds like you're looking for a switch with a couple 10gig uplinks. They don't usually come cheap.

Wow, there aren't any of these with 1/4 the connections?  xD

Yeah that's all I could find myself, just wanted to check if anyone knew of cheaper, smaller ones.

10gig equipment is classified as enterprise grade equipment, so therefor it comes with an enterprise price tag :(

You my be able to find something on ebay that is datacenter surplus or something.

Or you can settle for bonding more than one gig connection together to make faster than gigabit connections.

Alright, well thanks man.   :)

Oh well! Maybe more time will bring lower prices.

Mikrotik has its CCR series of routers if you really need 10gig capability for an affordable price.

But really you will end up spending enough to buy a decent i7 machine.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

What do you need 10Gbit for? Because if you can do with less you might want to consider a setup with serveral 1Gbit cables.

For  example you could have a 4 port expansion card like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833106050

, and connect that to a large 1Gbit switch. Its still expensive but not nearly as expensive as 10Gbit. Im not sure how you would set link aggregation up but im pretty sure its possible.

Also needs a new profile picture..
