Best way to backup an android phone?

I'm having some issues with my phone that are android software related and not hardware so I want to reset it and see if that helps. 

 

Before I do that I of course want to create a backup of the whole device even if most of the import stuff is already backed up ie photos. 

 

What's the best way to backup an android phone? 

I'm not going to be copying everything back over so as long as I can access all the files individually and deal with them that's fine.

What are you wanting to back up?
The phone remembers apps and your contacts.

Email should just sync.

I don't see what you'd want to keep if you've already backed up the other stuff.
