New GPUs, Marketing or Logical

Hey guys

I just need your feedback and thoughts about the GPU market and where its heading. Every so often a new set of GPUs launches at times more that few times per year. I notice that they have all these features and fancy marketing. Is it really worth it? or its just to target enthuse computer builders who love to benchmark? I recently build a mini itx Ryzen 3600 gaming pc with 32GB ram 3600 speed and for the GPU my old EVGA SC Titan X Maxwell architecture. I still get crazy FPS when i set games like RE2 Remake to max or any current games. I am not saying someone should go out and buy an old card cause i do see Titan x going for $400, may be better to buy a current gen. My point is I think all these GPUs that keep getting pushed out with fancy names and features are just marketing and for a topical gamer I don't think its mandatory to always upgrade once every 2 or 3 years if you have a good card.

I welcome your feedback whether its supporting my point or against it!

In 2015 I bought a GTX 980 ti for $695.55. It has about the same performance as a GTX 1660 ti that costs $250. If I was ok with that performance now I would still be running it.

The 980 ti was good for 1440p 60fps and I would have continued to use it but I bought a 3440 X 1440 60hz monitor and it was only good for frames in the 50s. It was replaced by a GTX 1080 that costs $656.98 in 2016 and it could run all my games at 60fps at 3440 X 1440.

By 2018 I wanted to replace my 60hz 3440 X 1440 monitor with a 100hz plus version so I bought a GTX 1080 ti for testing. It was not powerful enough for gaming over 100fps at that resolution so my next monitor would need a 2080 ti.

I did not go with a 100hz plus 3440 X 1440 monitor but instead bought a 3840 X 1600 75hz monitor and a 2080 ti to run it. I have no plans to upgrade this computer unless most games get harder to run than RDR 2 or I buy a monitor with a higher refresh rate.

I was chasing resolution and frames so I had to upgrade. Now that I have decided not replace the monitor it will stay as it is as long as it can play games over 75fps.

My other gaming computer has been using 60hz 4k monitors since 2015 and everything over 60fps was achieved at the end of 2018 with a 2080 ti.

It did not last long. I am not even bothering to install RDR 2 on that computer until a 3080 ti is available.

That computer is now connected to a 55" g-sync comparable OLED TV that will be at 120hz 4k when graphics cards come out with HDMI 2.1. There is no end in sight now for GPU upgrades for that computer.

If you are happy with your Maxwell Titan stick with it.

My happiness dose not seem to last long so I will upgrade.

I think it’s worth it to upgrade every 2-3 years.

Really depends on your wants/needs.

I try to stay at 120 FPS minimum at keeping high detail. So comes to a point where that’s hard. Normally right at that time frame, where much better cards come out for less.
