I am currently trying to network together 3 virtual machines running in virtual box. One is the latest version of ubuntu server, another is a windows 11 VM and I want to connect them both to VyOS. My main problem is that VyOS can't seem to connect to the internet. I have tried to ping 8.8.8.8 but it always says network unreachable. When trying to network the machines to each other I can't since VyOS is not getting an ipv4 address only ipv6. I believe this was causing problems when I was setting a specific route and needed a return ip. This is for an assignment in my cyber security networking class and are supposed to replicate the model in the image. We are supposed to use internal networks on the ubuntu server and windows machine and then a nat network with 2 matching internal networks for the other vms. I have tried just about everything but for the life of me I cannot get VyOS to get a ping and because it's not connecting properly I have a feeling that is what is causing issues with the rest of the assignment for me. I tried changing VyOS and the ubuntu server to just have a nat network attached the same as how I have my Kali machine set up but even then with only one adapter neither of the machines would connect and always returned the network is unreachable error. When I reached out to my professor about VyOS not having an ipv4 address he just asked me what it should be and wont tell me anything else. I know that somehow it has something to do with the .1 on each side of the diagram. I am pretty new to this level of networking so I don't understand a lot but I have been stuck on this assignment all week and this is my last resort.

I'm pretty new to NAS but I have a decent understanding of how it works... I think... My plan was to slap together some hardware for a multi-purpose home server which would include running my website, a NAS for personal use, and perhaps some minor game servers for myself and some friends (Link for anyone curious about the build). I can run most of what I need off of the boot SSD, but the NAS part needs a bit more storage, so I was planning to run 4 8TB disks in RAID 5, but want to mitigate some of the read/write losses from using spinning storage by using a pair of SATA SSDs in RAID 0. Is this even possible with any free software available on Ubuntu Server?

I had Jellyfin and Ngninx proxy + logs installed but after the recent TrueNAS update that bricked Truecharts (or whichever way that happened), I went to reinstall Jellyfin and I am running into the same error every time, I have fresh installed but still get the same error. I was hoping to move to something more stable that I can interact with (GUI) and get more accurate support on. Googling TN scale issues has proved challenging, as of course, it just brings up old Freenas forum posts with FreeBSD issues instead of Debian. I had no issues running Jellyfin prior so I don't think this is a hardware issue. Just wanted to get clarification on whether or not I needed to buy a 3rd drive to move data to so I can setup on Ubuntu. Also if I am mistaken please do not hesitate to educate me, totally willing to shift gears if this isn't the best (free at least for now) solution. Thanks for reading this and have a good rest of your day/night

Hi so I've got a 2.5gb nic with that has Realtek rtl8125 chipset on them. But they automatically use the r8169 driver that is used for my onboard ethernet. And since I've got the r8125 driver installed id like them to use that on instead. Is their any way top do so? I looked online and couldnt find any. this is the result of my nic when running lcpci -v Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8125 2.5GbE Controller Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8125 2.5GbE Controller [...] Kernel driver in use: r8169 Kernel modules: r8169, r8125

Hi so what has started to happen is as soon as I reboot/shutdown-power on my server the server looses internet connection for some reason. It still has acces to my LAN since I can ping it and ssh into it from my main pc but I cant run a speedtest for exemple and I can update or upgrade either and my devices using it has a dns server, because of pihole, dont have internet acces until I unplug the ethernet cable either from the server nic, the patch pannel or the switch. Im on ubuntu server 20.04. Any idea about that weird problem?

I'm running ubuntu server lqtest version. I tried to install unity ubuntu desktop on it but it login looped on getting greeter. I got easily into a tty2 terminal but given i disnt know issue i reinstalled entire os. So instead i think i'll go for one of those windows manager only setups cause it'll use less system resources and still let me do gaming maybe less hastle even given gpu driver was installed early. (saw people with arch and vareous youtubers pull this off. This being a window manager only setup.) I already installed basic mouse package for server. I like compiz and i saw its possible to run it without a desktop envirement/stand alone but all the tutorials i found are for 17/18.04, arch, or earlier ubuntu so no idea if they'd work. Jwm and compiz were the 2 i looked at. However i am not expirenced with window managers. Can someone recommend a begenner friendly one with workspaces and alt tab varient(im guessing that means tiling or composit, but begenner friendly/a start service command will make it work) Thanks. Im not expirenced at all. Service lightdm start is the most frimiliar i am with anything cli wise in terms of start. Before anyone says "why not just use a regular install and install unity?" I am taking a linux class and i figure getting good with the system on host while still being able to game would not only save me resources but help me in the long run. I intend to play steam games, virtual macchine stuff and use wine. As well as browser. And i do not have the expirnce for arch.

I have an old Dell R710 which I recently upgraded and turned into my NAS using TrueNAS Core, however before that it was running Ubuntu on 3 SSD's. I only had a RAID card but didn't want to use hardware RAID so I had to make a virtual drive that was only one physical drive and pass those through to Ubuntu, not a great solution but it was all I could do at the time. I did backup a bunch of files, like my old Minecraft server, but my dumbass accidently wiped the flash drive everything was backed up to. I would like to get that MC server back now and I have the original SSD's with all the data, I just don't know how to recover that data without basically yanking out all the HDD's in the server and setting my old config back up. I did try booting into Ubuntu with my old laptop and attaching the SSD's with a USB drive cage but the partitions show up as some, likely proprietary, Dell RAID partition. It's no big deal to power down my server and get the old config back up and running then just copy everything to my flash drive again, but I'd rather do it another way that's slightly easier if I can.

I set up static DHCP on ubuntu server, on regular ubuntu I entered the gateway address, which is 10.10.10.1. The IP address of the regular ubuntu is 10.10.10.2 and the ubuntu server is 10.10.10.1 so they are on the same network. But ping doesn't work. Why do some people write enp0s3 and enp0s8 in this file and others write eth0i eth1 instead? The same with the IP address, some people write [10.10.10.1/32] and others write in the same place - 10.10.10./32? I heard that it was done like this once. But I don't know which way is correct.

I used my BIOS to make a raid1 out of 2 8TB drives to use on my media server, They show up as just sdb and sdc and I don't really know what to do next first time dealing with raid of any sort. I saw some guides talking about dmraid and mdadm but its kind of confusing. Like do I just use sdb and it copies over to sbc or am I suppose to make a folder I saw something about md0 but again confusing. I am running on a intel i7 4770k if that helps.

Hi, So I want to setup a mail server when I build my server, And I want to be able to check mail from the web using something like IRedMail (I found this and it looked nice). I'm not really sure on how to do this. I'm gonna run Nginx and php 7, and I would like to be able to both send and view mails. and send mails from php (Using the standard thing right now). Where should I look for a guide if non of you could do a quick how I should do this? I cannot test anything since I havent buildt or installed the server yet.

For some reason, when I connect to a Hyper-V VM from the Hyper-V Manager, the size of the VM's window is unusally large, and it takes up a huge amount of space on my 1080p monitor. Is there a way to make the VM open into a smaller window, either using Hyper-V or within the VM? For reference, I'm using Ubuntu Server 16.04.1 as my VM OS. I just want more workspace, if nothing else.

Hello, so I have a Nextcloud server and a raid array. I have it setup but its connecting via a local network 10.0.0.99 I want to be able to access it outside of my home network. I have tried changing permissions to 0777, 0755. www-data:www-data is the owner recursively. This was working before but now it is not working! Thanks!

I just turned one of my old laptops into some of a VPS with Ubuntu Server; just to mess around on. But im having an issue... I'd like to trasnfer some files over using FileZilla (SFTP), but using my normal login with wont work as it wont let me upload files without root access. I've tried using passwd -u root, and it comes back with it has been successfuly unlocked and i changed the password to just "test" for now. But its still not working... I can login with root on the laptop itself, but using SSH or SFTP it still says "access denied" or "Authentication failed.". Any help? Im fairly new to all this linux-based server stuff, so sorry if this is a given and im just dumb...

So I'm trying to use an old computer that had a failed drive as a media server and smb server for home/family use. I've got a stock laptop and stock ps4 drive in it as well as a external hard drive plugged in, for a total of 3TB. I was able to get almost everything working for the media server but smb was fine but that was with one driver before I had the other two. Now I've added the other 2 drives and due to a mess up I'm starting from scratch and trying to set-up the raid during set-up of linux but I can't figure out how I should be setting up these partitions. So far I've gathered that I need to do one partition on a drive for the OS and then somehow link the remaining unallocated space, with the other two drives, to create the raid. I tried youtube but I can't find accurate info for menus for the latest Ubuntu Server, or the videos show a vmsetup which would be fine if they weren't using 4 drives for it which is making me more confused.

I started work on this here, and found the breakthrough was to use a flash drive for the os and the other 3 drives as storage for my home based server for media files to just documents. When I went to set it up with this new idea I followed this video. So the approach I'm using is to choose manual, create 3 partitions on the OS flash drive, then create the raid, add it as a partition, then set up, then it gets an error which I've attached below, I've tried reformatting the boot drive but I don't know what else to try, I can't exactly just pull 3 other hard drives out of nowhere to isolate the problem. Here's the partition set up I'm using: Choose Manual 64GB Sandisk Drive 1st Part 1GB swap 2nd Part 54GB ext4 mount: / 3rd Part I leave it blank so it uses the remaining approx. 1.779G ext 4 mount: /home Software Raid Chose raid level 5 Selected all 3 approx. 3TB drives Parition above raid as All space (1.819TB) ext4 mount: /srv Select done and then chose my name, password, etc. then I get this error after choosing other package options which I chose none.

Issues installing Ubuntu Server 19.04 onto a Q6600 system
elfensky posted a topic in Troubleshooting
I recently got my hands on an old desktop with an intel Q6600 (LGA775 socket, still has a North Bridge) that runs W7Ultimate and am now trying to get Ubuntu Server 19.04 installed onto it. Anyway, when I select the USB stick from the boot menu, it shows a purple ubuntu screen but then goes to a black screen and says: My only previous experiece booting Ubuntu was running the desktop version off a usb stick on laptops, and that worked flawlessly, so I really have no idea what I have to do to try and debug it. Some googling resulted in me trying to disable ACPI (link) using (link), but holding shift during the boot-up does nothing, and it goes to the same black error screen you see above. I've also tried disabling ACPI2.0 support in BIOS but that netted no changes. My hardware: mobo - Asus P5Q-VM cpu - Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad ram - 2x DDR2 2GB of some corsair xms2 disk - SanDisk 120gb SSD-

Hi everyone! I have a home server running Ubuntu Server 20.04.1 LTS, mainly as a Samba share and some other stuff. For a great part of the Samba share I've been running a RAID 0 made with 3 old HDDs, coming to 1.8TB of storage, but recently I changed one of the drives by removing the array, formatting the drives, etc. and building a new one. I use this array to put backups on it with Aomei Backupper. The problem is that now Backupper gives me very frecuent errors of not being able to write the file, and effectively when I try to write anything to that share Windows gives me a read-only error and I have to reset the server. Also, one time I tried to copy a big file to test this problem and Windows copied like 1% of it and the dropped to 0MB/s for about 5 minutes, returning to 15 or 20 MB/s (normal is 120MB/s for my connection) for a few minutes and dropping again, very strange behaviour nad it only affected that specific share where the RAID was mounted. I made a skdump of the drives that I'll attach to the post, and every one of them has an "Overall status: BAD_SECTOR" so I tried to sudo badblocks -v /dev/sdx > badsectorsx.txt for every single drive and got the results in 3 .txt files, but now I cannot perform a fsck or e2fsck on each drive because it does nothing and trying to fsck the md device gives me this server@server:~$ sudo fsck -p /dev/md127 fsck from util-linux 2.34 /dev/md127: clean, 704/122077184 files, 164898792/488284800 blocks What can I do to repair those bad sectors or to make the array work OK again? Also, I just noticed that the filesystem is reporting to have 700GB occupied when I barely have anything on that folders! Here are the skdumps: server@server:~$ sudo skdump /dev/sda Device: sat16:/dev/sda Type: 16 Byte SCSI ATA SAT Passthru Size: 476940 MiB Model: [WDC WD5000AAKX-00ERMA0] Serial: [WD-WCC2EDE45999]
