Hello guys, I have a really specific situation I think, but maybe someone has done something like this in the past that is similar. I am building a NAS in a (very) short 19" rackmount case. It is only 30cm deep, so not much deeper than the standard ATX mobo, that goes in it. The CPU is gonna be an i3-8300T (35W TDP). I do have a boxed cooler for it but I would really prefer the following solution: - Replace the boxed cooler with a small tower cooler (92mm fan size because bigger won't fit the case height) like the Alpenföhn Dolomit - omit the fan from the CPU cooler - use two 80 mm case fans that are mounted at the case front, to get air moving through the tower cooler and across the board Why? - less noise (one less fan) - I could hook up the two case fans to the headers of CPU_fan_1 and CPU_fan_2 for a bit of redundancy in case of a fan failure - I could then hook up the two 40mm fans, that cool the drives and sit above, to the mainboard as well and have them be controlled by the drive temperature, instead of them being always on - all fans being hooked up to the mobo comes with the advantage, that any failed fan is reported via a blinking red LED at the front of the case (and with fan splitters, you only have a 50/50 chance of that, cause only one RPM reading is forwarded) The question is, if the two 80mm case fans will be enough together with the "passive" tower cooler, to keep the CPU cool, even if they sit just barely in front of the motherboard? Would I need to duct them to the cooler, sacrificing VRM cooling? And would that still be enough if I would wanna use a chip with 70W TDP later on instead of the power sipping 35W 8300T? Thanks in advance for any help

What Did I do?: This is Avexir RAM that has had the heat sinks removed. To keep the ram cool inside my new custom case I have got some basic ally heat sinks. However, the yellow LEDs are not covered up which I thought would be a bad look but I'm not sure now. Once I've got everything in the case I will decide if I want to cover the LEDs with small pits of electrical tape. These are the only images that I managed to get due very bad camera support with my ROM. While I'm working on this, I don't plan on uploading images from this camera for much longer. I have some Nikon's around here somewhere that I will be switching to. Anyway, here are the pictures. Whats Next?: This weekend I have a build log in the pipeline for my main blog, Smokey's Chronicles. In addition to this, I have made some progress on the 290x red mod. This will likely be up tonight too but I've been delayed today. Nothing serious I just had to work late and then sort out this new build. Thank You :)

Hi. I am upgrading from R5 2400G and wondered if I could use it to build a passively cooled HTPC (Windows+Kodi/Netflix/YouTube/Skype or similar) So, the question is if it is possible to underclock 2400G so that it could be passively cooled and still handle HTPC tasks. If it is reasonable/possible, which cooler should I use? Thanks!

Was looking around google and couldnt find any true silent gpu's out there that aren't mid tier (gtx 750 , 1050ti was all I found), I am not big on watercooling or fans (even the strix smart cool fans on my 950ti are kind of pushing it) I was wondering if anyone knew any ways or any brands that sell passive cooled 1070s or 1080s or even a Titan, that are entirely passive cooled OR if there is some sort of site that manufactures custom fanless aftermarket passive cooled heatsinks for such cards? ,thanks yall

So a few months ago I contacted them to see if they were selling just the cooling system and case, and the reply was no because it would be too complicated for a user to set up themselves. They also told me that they were preparing a line of systems at different price points around $1k-$5k euros. Today I got an email with a lot more information, including THREE OTHER fanless case+cooling designs! Also: Here is all the info you can read for yourself (this information cannot be found on their website yet, so it's a pretty exclusive first look ) Source: my email Website: http://www.calyos-tm.com/calyos-fanless-pc-workstation/ Any guesses on what the other cases are going to be? Maybe more from Lian-Li?

Hi, im currently searching for a subwoofer, i have the SMSL AD18 as a Speaker amp and have my Jamo c-93 (my speakers) connected to them. now since i live in Germany it is kinda hard to find good stuff, i cant seem to find a good passive subwoofer that doesn't cost too much (max. = 300€). What i did find tho is several active subs, that have high lvl inputs like the Canton SUB 8.2, can i use those (high lvl inputs) to connect everything with each other ?

Hey! I was wondering why a passively cooled gpu isn't a thing? I only saw 1 model which rocked a passive cooling set up and that was the Palit GTX 1050Ti. Also, I wonder why Linus didn't review that? I understand insane numbers are a thing but maybe review one or two things that are in the mid range? Cheers

Will a Palit GeForce GTX 1050 Ti KalmX fit in this Chassis? It's a passive cooled gpu and I'm concerned with vertical length. (from the pci interface to the gpu thumb screw point and beyond)

There are some people reporting that their higher wattage power supply with fans do not use fans even under heavy loads. Would it be reasonable for a fanless build to get an overkill power supply that is like 1000W and has a fan compared to a 520W fanless power supply, for an approximately 400W build? Could I assume that the power supply cooler will remain passive all the time? Does this "just in case" scenario make sense? thanks

I am currently building a mid range gaming pc into and original xbox 360. Because of the size and power constraints i have decided to use the gigabyte fix 1050 to 45th. But it will only fit if I take the fans off and leave just the heatsink. Any body know how I can mitigate the heat, or if it will actually impact performance too dramatically.

Passive cooling specialist, Caylos has revealed their NSG passive cooling kit for the DIY crowd. The kit is designed for the Thermaltake Core P3 case, where its massive array of heatsinks and heatpipes should keep the components cool. The kit has 2 blocks, 1 for CPU and the other for the GPU, and has a total cooling capacity of up to 400W, in other words it can easily handle a Core i7 6700K and GTX1080 with out problems. More details about it, will come out during CES, which starts on January 5 through 8. And for those who are wondering how good Calyos is, here is Linus' review, on one of their workstations http://www.fanlesstech.com/2016/12/first-look-calyos-nsg-kit.html

Hi everyone, so the other day I got the evga gtx 1060 6gb sc (120w TDP), I thought it was going to be a silent card (my previous one was a msi gaming x, a really silent one). Lucky me found a Prolimatech MK 26 cooler which has a 320w TDP. Would that be enough to run the card without fans while gaming?

Ok so this will likely get a bunch of people saying "NO IT DOES NOT WORK, YOU NEED AN ACTIVE ADAPTER" But that's wrong, it does work, sometimes... Clearly VGA is analog, and HDMI is digital, however the internet is divided as to whether you can passively convert between the two standards. But i've seen it work plenty of times with my own eyes, including my current work laptop which drives a VGA monitor from its HDMI port with a legit HDMI to VGA cable, no adapter or active logic. So im wondering, do certain GPUs actually have the ability to output analog over the HDMI port ? in my experience its usually laptops that can do it. And to add to the weirdness, i once had a laptop which would output analog VGA from the HDMI port when the GPU was running in "windows basic display adapter" mode, with no drivers. but when i installed the drivers, i then had to use an active adapter to get VGA from that same HDMI port. TLDR; You shouldnt be able to passively convert HDMI to VGA, but sometimes you can, why ?

Hi all, I recently purchased a used Zotac GTX 1070 (ZT-P10700I-10P) and it seems like a great card. I'll be using it in an HTPC system and, as such, will be hooking it up to a TV. The only issue I have is that the card doesn't have an HDMI 2.1 port, only 2.0b, and the only thing my TV (LG OLED55C7P) has is HDMI ports, and I'd really like to shoot for 4K above 60 FPS. I know the card cannot handle that in most modern titles, but it should in older source games and such. I was wondering if I could simply use a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, as Displayport 1.4 works wonders for 4K video. I was wondering what type I would need, active or passive, as I am unable to find any information as to if the card even supports DP++, and what I could do if it did or didn't. What may help is it seems the card is just a different cooler on the Founder's Edition card. Again, my target is 4K over 60FPS. Thank you very much for your time.

Hey guys, I'd like to know what the difference between those cables is, because I have seen that passive Thunderbolt 3 cables are a bit cheaper than active cables. What is the best choice for a eGPU? Thanks in advance!

I just upgraded from a GTX 980 to RTX 2080, but my monitor is a BenQ XL2411 which doesn’t have display port. It has HDMI, DVI and VGA ports. This monitor is 1080p 144Hz, but I can’t get 144Hz with hdmi, and I can’t use the DVI cable I used before to get 144Hz, because the 2080 doesn’t have a DVI port. I tried with a single link dp to DVI, but it didnt work. Which cable do I need to Get 144Hz?

How much heat could a cpu slower than my pc fans generate?

I was wondering whether this (Subwoofer out --> receiver --> passive sub) would be possible. I'm on a budget so I can't afford buying an active sub to hook up to the soundbar, which only has subwoofer out, but I do have a receiver and passive sub that works on that receiver. I was thinking of buying a cable that either went from subwoofer out --> 3.5 mm, or subwoofer out --> stereo rca (and then a cable: stereo rca --> audio jack). I'm fine with a bit of distortion. The sub will only be meant is complimentary to the listening experience and not be centre stage, but I'm wondering if it'd work. If you need more specs, just ask.

I've put together a new build with a lot of Noctua fans, two in the front, one in the bottom, one in the back and two on the Kraken water cooling radiator at the top of the Fractal design chassi. So far the build is as quiet as I can get with normal cooling. However, I got a video output card for use in color critical applications and it got a chip cooling with a cheap bad and small fan that has this annoying pitched tone to it. It's so annoying now that the rest of the computer is quiet that I had to disconnect the card when I'm not working with critical color work for my post production needs. I was thinking that I might be able to replace the card fan with a passive solution now that there's a lot of air flow with all the new fans. But I'm not sure how to achieve this? What passive cooling solution should I use? What is enough so that it doesn't overheat? Removing the fan shouldn't be much of a problem, but how do I attach a new passive cooler on it? Here's a screen of the Decklink card I want to change the cooling on.

Hi I always wanted some cheap tiny PC that would make no sound at all while using it So recently i bought some parts for cheap That's what inside the PC today - i3 3225 (55W TDP) with intel HD4000 - Prolimatech Megahalems cooler - 8Gb DDR3 - Asrock H77M ITX - KingSpec P3 120Gb SSD - Chieftec 120W ITX power supply - Realan i3s case An now for the build Log The case Looking for how much place I have for the psu Screws diddn't match so hot glue it is Inside done Test fitting before cutting the metal panel The final product I'm happy with the result and the temperatures are good too, after 15-20 minutes OCCT + Furmark / Aida 64 CPU+GPU torture test, im getting max 67°C on the cpu

Dear all, Long time lurker but i finally registered :-) Short intro, I'm from the Netherlands and record/broadcast classical music for live radio and cd productions. Besides that into sailing, cows and building electric equipment. For my recording rig i have two identical PC's in case one F's up the second one should be running fine. They are based on a haxx.eu case and are cooled passively by coupling the CPU to a copper block and the copper block is coupled to a (LARGE) heatsink. Config right now: Intel i7 4790, gigabyte z97UD3H, silverstone nightjar 520 fanless PSU, 16gb of ram, M.2 ssd 128Gb (and a SSD swap caddy) Some specialist pci-e cards from RME for audio (MADI and AES3) in and out of the PC's This served me very well the past few years and still works like a charm. It handles P95 tests very well without throttling and and in general use it works without crashes. But now i want to get into video editing and probably will be using Black Magic Da Vinci Resolve for this. This program relies heavily on the GPU for most of the heavy lifting so i think my system should have a dedicated GPU. As you guessed i'm not a fan of fans...... I try to keep my systems as silent as possible as most fan noises are distracting during my work and also end up on recordings. Main question what is the baddest GPU i could find with at least the option to cool it without a fan? I fount the Palit KalmX 1050TI wich could be a good match for my system. But maybe i could go up a notch and have a 1060 or even a 1070 in a fanless config. Do you know of any? I'm not interested in water cooled options for, now but maybe if i end up swapping the Mobo and the CPU I will be. I'm not affraid to get my hands dirty and rebuild an existing card with a new heatsink but i'm not ready to make the heatsink itself.

I'm trying to understand how a 2080 Ti with a 450+W draw can possible be cooled by its tiny little fin stack, when much (much!) larger sinks (e.g. two 12" chunks of https://www.heatsinkusa.com/12-000-wide-extruded-aluminum-heatsink/) would have an ambient differential of 50+ degrees to handle a similar load (according to the manufacturer's C/W). Am I misunderstanding the amount of heat these cards are putting out? Underestimating the surface area of their fin stacks? Missing some other detail? If it's relevant I'm considering a somewhat Stefan1024-style build (though I plan to have a single, large fan pouring air over all the sinks).

I recently found out about the Accelero S3 Passive Cooler. On the website GTX 1060 is listed as one of the compatible cards, even in a case with no fans at all. Does anyone know how it performs? What kind of temps could I expect?

Hey everyone, So I am using an external gpu for my laptop, an amd hd7870 eyefinity. Recently I bought a new monitor with a vga connector so I bought an adapter for mini DP to vga a passive one I think. Now the thing is my monitor says that it has no signal despite the radeon software as well as windows and device manager seeing a second display although I cant change its resolution. I woudld greatly appreciate any help! Regards, Snieky
