Apologies for spelling or grammar, I'm on my phone. So earlier today I fired up one of my VMs in VirtualBox. I tried to forward a USB device, which I've done before without issue, and Windows couldn't recognize it. I had the thought that maybe it's because I had upgraded from Debian 11 to 12 as the host and maybe I needed to check for updates and maybe update the extension pack that facilitates things like USB forwarding. The extension pack in the past has always been a separate download on their site, so I headed over to VirtualBox(.)org , and it seems kind of barren. The big old download button takes you to a page with links to the source code and that's about it. The download page used to be filled with links to the extension pack, binary installers for various platforms, repo instructions for various Linux distributions, etc., and literally none of that was there. The only thing that remotely looked like a link to actually download it was for "older builds" like 6.1, but when I clicked that it just took me to a page with a couple lines explaining that the extension pack was licensed a certain way with a link to the license, but no links to actually download anything. The only way I can see that you can download it from their website now is to download the source code and build it yourself. The Debian repo I already have set up appears to be working and contains a copy of 7.0, but if I want up update the extension pack, or even set it up on a different system, I'm just out. Adding a Debian repo requires importing and trusting a signing key for that repository, none of which I can find now. I can only really think of two explanations: 1) VirtualBox is a huge net loss for Oracle and they're cutting it loose. 2) Tons of companies were using the free, personal version of it for business purposes, so they're trying to corral those people into buying a support license from them and are just removing all the free downloads from their website. Update I just tried to visit their site on my phone to double check and make sure I'm not just blind before posting this, and the whole site is down now. I don't mind using Qemu on Linux, it works fine. I just kept VirtualBox around because I only occasionally use VMs for a few very specific tasks for my personal use, and it was easier to get set up with, and when reading from a passed thru optical drive it seemed to perform a little better, at least the last time I tried comparing. I had noticed though that, the last time I tried starting a Windows 10 VM in VirtualBox, if you install the guest additions, which includes a virtual display driver, it breaks the aero/transparencies in the Windows UI so that weird things happen, like the background of the start menu being completely transparent. And it has been that way for a while. Maybe they are just abandoning it altogether.

Intel however is not giving up on the partnership with Oracle and insists that the new line of Xeon Scalable offerings will be a strong player on the enterprise market. I'm looking to migrate our Zimbra server to the cloud to save costs and better uptime. Our current setup is a Dell PowerEdge T30 in our office running Zimbra 8. We are based somewhere in Java, Indonesia. We only need around 50 email accounts, up to 100 in the future, each are very low volume (within 3 years we only used up like 30GB worth of storage in total). The problem with being in a third world country, power outages are common (which happens every couple weeks on average) and setting up a UPS that can go hours to keep the server running isn't cost effective at all. It also costs like $200 monthly for a 10Mbps internet connection with dedicated bandwidth + static IP. Switching to a home business plan for basic internet services will increase our bandwidth by a lot while saving us over $100 monthly (however we'll lose static IP). We're considering options of hosting with AWS (Jakarta) or Oracle Cloud (Singapore). I will try to setup a test server soon with both services some time soon. One concern I had was I encountered too many posts on reddit and elsewhere telling people to avoid Oracle at all costs, but the pricing they're offering is too tempting and honestly very competitive compared to AWS. Compared to free, AWS calculator estimates $80 for EBS and EC2 alone. Azure D2 v3 estimates to $40 monthly. Both Azure and AWS pricing also requires a 3 year commitment. Oracle meanwhile offers 200GB of storage always free and plenty of performance with their ARM A1 Flex instance and then asks $4.25/100GB block storage (we don't even currently need). Before you mention other cloud/VPS hosting services, I've looked up local options and most are unattractive in pricing and does not offer same uptime guarantees as Azure/AWS/Oracle. Also some services such as AWS WorkMail are not available outside US and EU. I still think Oracle only screws you over if you're a large enough company with high enough usagr. Will I be fine using Oracle Cloud? Any thoughts are welcome

Hey all, I need some help from you guys A friend asked me if I can help him by choosing the right parts for his build. He told me that his goal is to work 95% of the time with vm´s that should run all kinds of database and networking stuff (db2, oracle, elo etc.). He uses this software setup at work (IT support) but he has no experience on the hardware side. What we figured out is that he want to run around 4-6 VM´s at a time with medium workload and needs min 6gb Ram per VM (6*6 = 32GB so we ended up with 64gb of RAM total for his system. I thought that in this scenario a xeon processor is the better choice cause of the higher corecount so that he can assign more cores to a vm and cause he don´t need a high clockspeed per core. I´m no beginner in building computers but I never get in touch with Xeon processors and ECC ram. I know what the difference are but I don´t no which Xeon makes sense and I have no overview over the available models as well as the related motherboards. The rig that is consider until now looks like this: 64gb Ram 4x 250gb SSD 1-2x 1TB HDD for long time storage (maybe WD Red´s cause his pc is running nearly 24/7) 1x used GTX 560 ti (a already have one from an old rig and he don´t need a good GPU and if he decide that he needs more later on a gpu is easy to upgrade) Putting money into a cpu make more sense then in a GPU that he woun´t use. 200-250 for case and PSU Processor ? (high core count needed ) The budget for that whole PC is around 2000-2500 Euro (2150-2650 us dollar) Can you recommend a good CPU on the xeon side or 6-10core i7 side? Thanks in advance Greeting Pascal

I'm looking for a software based solution, to control several virtual machines at one time using a single mouse and keyboard. Example: If I was on Google and clicked the search bar, all of my virtual machines would click the search bar at the same time; and then when I type something, they would all type. I've looked around but found nothing, I can't think why this wouldn't exist?

Summary Oracle is trying to buy tiktok. we already know microsoft and twitter are also in talks for acquisition from bytedance. now of course bytedance hasn't even offered a price for sell, or even if they will sell in first place. Quotes My thoughts ok i know its a little too late, it was on techlinked, but couldn't find any forum page on it , so let's talk about this. The only reason Trump is siding with Oracle is, Larry Ellison (founder of Oracle, now CTO) has helped his campaign; alot. Of all companies on earth, none of them are as ruthless and scummy as oracle. Remember this is the same company that is still continuing the lawsuit against google for java api names 10+ years after and how google is violating a copyright. this is also the same company that charges for jvm per machine. they left mysql to die, for people to pay for oracle db. do i even need to mention solaris. what about countless of tech they buy just to kill it so they dont have a competitor. i digress. I cant even imagine what kind of ruthless plans would oracle have for tiktok. lets hope microsoft acquires it. We have a setup where we use MS SQL Server with a linked Oracle server. Our database has views on the Oracle database. We have in-house written software (I'm the lead developer) which uses this setup. We've had this setup for 5 years and it's working fine in production, on a beta server and all our development boxes, except mine. I recently rebuilt my machine using Windows 10 (I'm the first using Windows 10 for this). I'm using the Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1.0.2.0) client (we previously used 11g, but Windows 10 appears to require 12c). When I try to perform an update against a view on the Oracle server, within a transaction, it fails. This works fine on any of our other servers, so I'm sure it's either a Windows 10 issue, Oracle 12c client issue, or I've somehow messed up the setup. I've done all the setups in the past (production, beta, and all developer machine setups), so I have quite a bit of experience doing this over the years. The problem is only with a transaction. Non-transactional queries and updates work just fine. Here's an example that will fail. begin tran SET XACT_ABORT ON; update CLIENT set SUPERVISOR_FLAG = 'Y' where CLIENT_CODE = 'XYZ123' commit tran The error I get is: OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "REMOTESERVER" returned message "Unable to enlist in the transaction.". Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 2 The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "REMOTESERVER" was unable to begin a distributed transaction. Multiple SQL Servers link to the same back-end Oracle server and they have no problem with this, so I can rule out a configuration issue on the Oracle server. These are my DTC settings and these are the same as other machines that are working: [Image attachment] For my Oracle Provider for Ole DB (OraOLEDB.Oracle) settings, I have "Dynamic parameters", "Nested queries", "Allow inprocess" and "Supports 'Like' operator" enabled. This is also the same as other machines. Under Server Options the settings are: Collation Compatible - False Data Access - True RPC- True RPC Out - True Use Remote Collation - True Collation name - [blank] Connection Timeout - 0 Query Timeout - 0 Distributor - False Publisher - False Subscriber - False Lazy Schema Validation - False Enable Promotion of Distributed Transactions - True Again, these match the settings on other working servers. I'm stumped. I'd really appreciate any help anyone can offer on this. Thanks & Regards Camillelola

java Oracle to start licensing Java for commercial use
crashypants87 posted a topic in General Discussion
Oracle is going to begin charging businesses for commercial use of Java beginning January 2019. Java is used in billions of devices and applications worldwide. According to their website, Java will remain free for consumers for non-commercial use until at least January 2020. Developers will need to either begin paying for a commercial license in 2019 or they will need to make plans to port their software to another platform. Businesses who have developed Java applications in-house may be subject to licensing fees as well. Consumers will be able to continue using Java for free until 2020. However, Java-based games and applications used by consumers will be subject to the commercial licensing fees paid by the developer which may present issues to consumers who rely on these applications at home where the developer has chosen not to pay the licensing fee to keep the application available. The full release notice can be found on Oracle's website.- 10 replies

Oracle moves one stage further toward getting a ~$9.3 billion settlement from Google and possibly crippling Android development. Hey Folks How's things greeting from Ireland. So I couldn't find anything on the web for this so I figured I'll ask. Part of my college course requires me to use Virtual Machines, up to 7 or 8 at a time whilst exploring domains and so on. Mad stuff but anyways I survive college life such as not getting the same PC all the time by having the .vhd files stored on a portable SSD (External SSD via USB). So when I change computers across different classrooms etc. I have to set oracle up each time like .vhd location, memory size, video size, configure internal network and so on for each Virtual Machine. Is there a way to export all those configurations of my different OS's from a fully set up Oracle to a file so for instance I sit at a new computer all I need to do is copy over from the drive this config file stick it into some Oracle folder and bam everything is on the list. Just food for thought cause it would make life a lot easier. Cheers

Most of my work revolves around mail merging in Adobe InDesign for some PDF generation. The current steps are as follows: Enter data in MS Excel's appropriate columns, with one column dedicated to image URL (if any). Exporting complete worksheet in .csv file format. Updating .csv link in Adobe InDesign Finding row no. of the newly added / entered rows Mail-merging data in Adobe InDesign Now the issue I'm facing is of data entry. With scope of increasing workload, I'm thinking of adding another terminal for entry of data to the excel worksheet but with this comes another issue of handling concurrent users in same excel sheet. Also, I want the files to be backed up online. I tried using OneDrive as a central location to back up but it causes huge problem when two people start working on the same file and click 'save'. On 'saving' a file, OneDrive finds differences and instead of merging the edits intelligently, OneDrive creates another copy of the excel file and this creating confusion. So I am wondering if: There can be a way to have lightweight Oracle installed in other systems and Oracle server / main database installed in the main machine so that multiple people can work on same database concurrently without worrying about redundancies? Such Oracle / MySQL or any suitable lightweight SQL database can be accessed online Such database can be backed up online Is there a tool to import data directly from Oracle into Excel? or if not, Is there a way to convert data directly from Oracle database (filtered via SQL query) into .csv? If there is an option to work on Database such as Oracle / MySQL / MSSQL / Postgre or any that can help me export .csv file for an extract / SELECT query, then I is there a way to enter it using some GUI instead of command line?

Alright so I don't know how many people will be able to answer this but I'll give it a shot. So I am using Oracle MAF to play around with phone apps and stuff and I am using HTMLUnit as a library (headless browser). When I use it in the code the IOException causes hiccups in the program. I'm only trying to test stuff out right now and I don't really know why IOException is causing an issue. I've tested only initializing the browser and that works, but as soon as I execute any code with IOException I get errors. The code below is just my test to see if it will work in JDeveloper through an IOS simulator. So far it doesn't work in the simulation, but it does in Eclipse as a command line java program. package mobile; import oracle.adfmf.amx.event.ActionEvent; import com.gargoylesoftware.htmlunit.WebClient; import com.gargoylesoftware.htmlunit.html.HtmlPage; import java.io.IOException; public class hr { public hr() { } //on button click execute this code public void doaction(ActionEvent actionEvent)throws IOException{ //initialize headless browser WebClient webClient = new WebClient(); HtmlPage currentPage; //get url currentPage = webClient.getPage("http://www.google.com/"); String test = currentPage.getTitleText(); //print title of webpage System.out.println(test); } } The error that it is throwing is attached in an image. Also the command line error is below: [SEVERE - oracle.adfmf.framework - Utility - invoke] InvocationTargetException Error: oracle.adfmf.framework.exception.AdfException Let me know if you guys have any insight, it would be much appreciated. Also, I know AdfException works, but I don't know how I could use it with HTMLUnit. Thanks in advance.

Hi! So I have on my laptop (see profile for specs) 3 virtual machines, 1 windows 10, 1 server 2012, and 1 pfsense router. No matter what network configuration in the settings I choose, the virtual machines don't pick up my home network. Can someone help please? EDIT: As I was writing this article McAfee informed me that my windows 10 machine connected to the network, and I can see it on my router's gateway, but cannot access the internet from the machine itself. Neither the pfsense machine or the windows server 2012 machines are running. The win 10 network configuration machine is configured at the moment is attached EDIT2: The win-10 machine has started working, can access the internet and appears on my router, but the other machines aren't working still.

ANDROID AUTHORITY SOURCE BBC NEWS SOURCE After a very long and expensive lawsuit, Google has finally won over Oracle as court declares Googles use the 37 Java API's for Android fair use. Thanks to this ruling Google can continue improving upon their Android ecosystem but I'd like to see them move away from Java in the future to something better for higher performance across devices.

Google v. Oracle: Unlicensed use of APIs might be a fair use, US says. I don't know where I stand on this. On one hand I think that our current system needs to be taken behind the barn and double tapped but on the other hand, our system is the system that currently exists and you don't get to blatantly violate it and not expect to get caught. That it is Google give me less sympathy. Its not like they couldn't afford to license what they needed from Oracle and its not like Oracle couldn't take a massive haircut on their fees to make it happen - greed is just good in this respect. Or is it ultimate cheapness in not doing things the easy way? Oh well, lets see how this one plays out. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/05/white-house-sides-with-oracle-tells-supreme-court-apis-are-copyrightable/
