I’m planning on building a DIY router with 2-3 APs. I haven’t decided if I should use OpenWRT or pfSense or something else (would love to hear your inputs on that). If I want it to have mesh roaming capabilites, what are the things I need to keep in mind? Would I be able to use any APs, or would I need to use one from the same brand/model?

Hello LTT forum, I've been following Tomaž Zaman, a YouTuber who is planning to create a high-end router. His focus isn't solely on providing behind-the-scenes insights into the design and planning process but also on everything involved in commercializing it.... from picking components for the device and seeking investors and establishing a company. What sets this project apart is its commitment to transparency. Through his videos and posts, he intends to document every step of the process, from idea to execution. He's already uploaded several videos, ranging from the presentation of his prototype to announcing his interest in creating and selling the device. He's also discussed potential pricing based on the bill of materials he's already shared. Summary Personally, I don't know him beyond his channel, but I am very interested in this project, and I believe it deserves a litter of exposure for everyone to appreciate. By sharing this project with all of you, I hope to generate additional interest and foster a community that can contribute ideas and feedback. I am following a guide on youtube which let you install openwrt on R2S, which can help me bypass the GFW. In the video the dude said I need to change my laptop's ipv4 address to match openwrt's ip address. So, in my case I need to change my ip address to a static one which is 192.168.2.X but if I changed it, I cannot connect to internet. Which part did I do wrong ? This is my current settings : (which works fine) This is his setting If I do what he said on my machine you can see cant save IP settings. How is that?? What about I change it from here?? what would my settings be? Also what should be the new DNS address???

Budget (including currency): n/a Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: openwrt wifi routing and as a hub for a wifi star network topology. Id like a wifi router that can scale with me currently i only have 40mbs adsl internet but i will be upgrading soon to fibre. id also like it to have 2 sfp+ ports (one for wan one for lan) 1 rj45 (for my current speeds) and some mpcie for wifi cards. I'm ok having used parts. so I've found a few things here paired with this, an m.2 boot drive, some ram and 2 mpcie wifi modules with full bandwidth g/n/ac/ax. I'm wondering if this will work or if anyone has experience with this. after a lot of googling it seems not many people know this exists and with this being rather expensive I just want to make sure it will play nice. Thanks for any help

First im new to OpenWRT and i realize there is an entire wiki on this topic and setup, but im not understanding the information exactly so maybe one of you guys could explain it in more laymans terms... this is the router i am trying to configure, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBXMBQF/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_Z04ZNZFJ5Y4VYDDMKZ3T it seems to do everything i need it to.... individually, but i cannot seem to connect to static IP devices... Im and automation technician, here lately i have been doing alot of reprogramming and replacing plc's and i tend to prefer ethernet, these devices often come with various preset IP address's that need to be changed upon initial setup so that their on the same subnet. I quickly realized readdressing all of them and plugging in a wireless router was needed to eliminate time, then i need to add internet to this new network to assist with help files, etc. So i took an old TP-link router that i found that was 5V and modified it to create my network with all my devices, and added another access point device to plug into the Wan port on the TP link router. This setup works but is bulky and rather large, so i found the above device that is USB powered and has all the features needed however i cannot see any of the PLC/HMI style devices and i am not sure why... The router does have a Luci GUI under the advanced settings but everytime i mange to get static IP devices to show, then i break Internet connectivity so im sure what i am doing wrong, If someone feels like reaching out to help i can further explain in detail or maybe even setup a video call. I figure it wouldnt take long but ive wasted two days and have factory reset this thing multiple times. ATTACHED IS MY DESIRE CONFIGURATION... the ethernet ports on the back would act as a switch allowing everything on the "switch" to talk amongst there selves as well as to the laptop... (these three ports on the device dont need internet, but it would be nice if they could access it as well) The laptop can access internet and all devices... and i can use wifi or USB tethering as my internet source depending on if i am in the workplace or on a service call.... can anyone help or atleast point me in the right direction...

Hello, so basically the wifi of my access point that I'm using as a router has lag spikes of 100 to 220 ms for like 3 seconds every few minutes and, I saw that this could be cause because I have high or a lot of "bufferbloat" (you can search it up) and OpenWrt can be used to reduce it. Problem is, my access point is a "off-brand" I think, I think its chinese, it doesn't have an easily visible brand, so I'm not sure how to determine if this device would support OpenWrt or not, hope you guys can help me with that. If you guys need any more info to try and help me I can try to provide it to you, thats it, thank you in advance. NOTE: I can't connect via ethernet and the access point is close to me

I am finally going to get fibers! This calls for an update of my network equipment. What would be ideal: DD-WRT/OpenWRT/Tomato support, or a good control panel - I am interested in QoS, some nice stats Wi-Fi range - current Tenda AC11 is doing okay, the signal has to go a single storey up and down, but I can just add an access point if it's necessary ability to handle 20-30 clients, about 10 connections from things that actually do something. I plan to connect 2 PCs using RJ-45, that's the reason why I'm writing here, I wasn't able to find a 2.5 Gbit/s compatible router yet. Everything stops at 1gbit and while that's the offered Internet speed, both PCs are 2.5 capable and we do transfer files between them. Did any of you look into this subject? The limit would be around $400 for a device or two combined, cables and other stuff I can buy and install separately.

Hello, I wanted to know if someone knows if there is custom firmware available for this router or if it could be able to port it since AFAIK, Tenda routers are just re-brands of other routers. I believe this router uses Realtek chip-set and i read that OpenWRT does not have support for Realtek chip-set, but I'm not sure. Couldn't fine more info about the arch or chip-set of this router. Any help is appreciated Product page: https://www.tendacn.com/product/AC21.html

A few things to note before starting. This mod is just for fun and learning. the performance benefit will probably be unnoticeable but I still find it cool having a modded overclocked router. if you dont know how to help but still interested just wish good luck and stay updated ill try updating here and there. whats the deal I got an old router lying around which I didn't really had a porpoise so I decided to make it my main and mod it a bit so I will be able to OC down the road. the mod is unnoticeable from the outside , its just radiator on-top of the CPU shielding and a fun to make the "passive" cooling more effective the whole build is based on Openwrt which from what I understand should allow to tweak those kinda parameters. but where is the problem -I made some research while trying the problem it didn't get me far. I found out that the boot-loader on this thing is uboot and that it boots from a certain partition which which I dumped using dd, didn't really find a way to explore it . The idea behind is to find the parameters which affect the CPU speed change them and overwrite that partition this idea is problematic because any integrity check on that partition will lead to a brick (idk if it even exists). -I found a little software which allows you to mess with the partition's variables* (it maps something by setting an offset in the flash ...) also problematic to mess with. how can I make sure the offset is correct ? and even if it is there is no mistake there is no cpu_freq parameter (like some people said) or something with the same value as its supposed frequency -turns out someone was able to OC it using DDWRT... don't really wanna change to DDWRT... I kinda like Openwrt more Please correct me where I messed up after-all its also interesting just to know , Thank you. *I may be talking nonsense. A few links I used in the way: https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/linksys/linksys_e4200_v2 https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/ea4500 https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/31651-cisco-linksys-e4200v2-dual-band-n900-router-reviewed https://www.stevejenkins.com/blog/2013/03/how-to-overclock-a-ciscolinksys-e4200-router-running-dd-wrt/ (there is no vnram command in opernwrt)* https://forum.openwrt.org/t/overclocking-router-devices/1298 (the idea of dumping)

Hello, I am trying to replace my router with Dyi OpenWRT running in VM. And something went wrong ... I can’t figure out how to make it work. I am using a miniPC with 4 LAN ports: Current network configuration: With parameters: And the future network configuration should be: So far, I have installed OpenWRT in the VM and tried to configure it, but ... already at this point I can’t access the Internet from the LAN device (192.168.2.5). For testing, I still use a MiniPC connected to the router, and the Internet works fine on the host system. My Vmware configuration (WiFi card not yet installed): And my OpenWRT configuration (WiFi card not yet installed): Does anyone know a step-by-step guide for such a configuration or can advise how to do this? Hi all! I am working on a little project currently, but struggling a bit. So I am trying to do the following: I want to have any network, that I can hook my pi up to, and have all the network on the other "side" of the pi go through a VPN. The setup: Pi ethernet port (eth0): the internet side; a USB ethernet adapter (eth1): the "VPN" side. I have got a VPN server set up and have the required ovpn profiles. I've been messing with every setting for a long time now, but cannot seem to figure out how to make it work. If you need the interfaces, firewall or whatever else file, let me know. I hope you are able to help me. Kind regards, Tobias de Bruijn

I'm looking for recommendations on a good, stable and inexpensive router that supports OpenWRT/LEDE. It should have a usb port for storing logs on a usb stick and have enough ram to run nodogsplash without hitching under the load of 80+ simultaneous users. I'm in Ontario, so Canadian stores preferred to avoid import issues.

I don't think there's one, but less reliance on WiFi and more use of wired connections is a start granted there are some devices that don't have other alternatives to radio Eric Schultz, Save Wi-Fi coalition commented:

I flashed the proper version of OpenWRT for my TL-WR740N and after following some tutorials online on how to set it up as my homes primary router. I am stuck at VLAN's every time I save and apply my VLAN settings I can't access the router anymore. Can anyone help? I am from Malaysia. source: http://www.cnx-software.com/2015/07/27/new-fcc-rules-may-prevent-installing-openwrt-on-wifi-routers/ this one boggles the mind, please sit down in case of spontaneous rage The rule in question is listed on the FCC website with the question “What are the software security requirements for non-SDR devices and what limitations apply to software configuration control for such devices?” and the critical part of the answer being “require all devices to implement software security to ensure that the devices operate as authorized and cannot be modified“. --- --- what the actual fuck?! I literally want to punch a kitten what's next? PCs will come with Windows and only Windows will be allowed ---
