  1. So i just got my hands on an old ibm xseries 226 server, im thinking about changing the included single core xenon cpu with 2 Xeon X7460 to get 12 cores, they have the same 604 socket so in theory they should work. Does anyone know if the Xeon X7460 is compatible with the server's motherboard? thanks
  2. can i use this sensor on my motherboard? maybe i can made a adapter for it, idk help!
  3. One night while searching for a decent listing of my favorite IBM keyboard, the KB-8923, I started to look for a more compact layout and something newer... This led me to what I learned is called "TenKeyLess," (TKL for short) or 87-key models. I knew they existed, I just didn't know of many, and rarely see them out in the wild. Like many, I've long grown tired of those excessive keys on the side taking up extra space on an often poorly designed panel. During the search, I came across one that had the cleanest, most appealing design of all; the Leopold FC-750R. Although I don't care for the use of the obsolete mini-USB port, I'm very interested in the replaceable keycaps with modern Cherry-MX switches-- and the surprisingly durable under-structure. So at this point I know what I want, but I can't exactly get it 100% right because of how parts are marketed... I narrowed it down to 2 color schemes of the FC-750 that definitely have my attention; Graphite Blue (or Sky Dolch... whatever that is...) and Ash Yellow. As you can see, the blue one is visually appealing, but I absolutely HATE that ugly brown for the main keys. Call me picky all you want, but I think everyone can agree that any shade close to cerakote utterly clashes with the beauty of the outer area and simply does not work with this black and blue theme. I mean, blue is great, but the brown doesn't fit on anything other than retro-themed layouts. Next, the Ash Yellow is stunning; the sharp color contrast gets the attention of all who see it and really "jumps out" in terms of visibility-- I swear, I could see this is a pitch black room with no backlight and no screen-- it's that kind of bright yellow. To be clear, there are very few cases wherein yellow is an acceptable color for anything, much less a keyboard. The problem here is that it's too stunning; bright yellow works on the space gray keys, in fact they even compliment each other; but yellow on black is generally too pronounced. From an enthusiast standpoint, I feel almost blinded by the yellow-on-black outer keys. But the soft gray keys provide that mild semi-retro appeal (keyboards from the early to mid 2000's) and with solid yellow legends to offer added visibility. Here's my dilemma: both cost $119 USD, and only come as complete assemblies. I've tried an failed to locate individual keycaps or sets of them in the schemes seen here, after looking at several known sites that sell key cap sets. I want the first model shown, but I need to replace all the brown keycaps with the gray ones shown on the second layout. And yes, I'm keeping the legends as they are, so the layout I desire here is Ash Yellow for the primary keys (and applicable F- keys) and Black/Sky Blue for all secondary/outer keys. Just short of defaulting to my original favorite, I could go for broke and get both layouts, configure the one I'll keep the way I want it, and then either resell the second unit with the inverted layout, or keep it for parts or as a spare. But, that's super expensive. A single legacy KB costs enough as it is, so how would I justify ordering 2 of this exotic new one? What should I do? Maybe wait 'til I can afford both? Or just go with the old one I already know and love? And DO NOT tell me to contact one of those keycap makers to order custom caps. That still costs more, and communication of any kind other than F2F always gets me nowhere with companies. Believe me, I've tried that. And PLEASE leave out the lousy "you could 3D print them" comments! UPDATE: Found a site where you can "build your own keyboard" with their cleverly made web design, and managed to get a general image of what my idea looks like: I know, not as cool as one might think, right? Upon realizing how ridiculous the color scheme would be, I set my idea to the side in favor of something similar and better. Then, I came across this odd listing for the FC750R-PS (instead of PD) which seems to be particularly favored in Korea, but with a couple units available in the U.S for the slightly higher price of $180 (likely for extra import charges). Not my absolute favorite, but I think it will be once I get used to having that metallic gray style on my desk again. (I had an SK-1510 for a long time with an OEM gray layout, and it was the first model I called a favorite) This is the only reasonable quality image I can find of the PS model aside from a handful of YouTube videos...
  4. Yo, its me again! So i can quite find the maximum capacity for a IBM BR10i raid controller. I found a post on Amazon it supports 2TB maximum but is this the case? Its in an IBM AC1 4769 Server system running RHEL 7.7 Thanks in advance.

  6. There were rumors about Dr. Lisa Su leaving AMD and going to IBM. She has come forward and claimed that rumor is not true. This obviously has everyone speculating on why would she leave AMD at this point when it's doing so well. but then I started thinking about the other important VIP's who have left to work for other companies over the years like Ryan Shrout a tech journalist CEO joining Intel along with many other VIP moving to Intel. All these tech VIP migrations are leading me to speculate WHAT IF all the tech companies are secretly working together to ensure that none of them fail because they know competition is important for thriving businesses. What if they are intentionally moving the smartest minds to the companies that are hurting the most in order to bring those companies back up off the floor and get them back on their feet. Now that AMD has gotten back on its feet, everyone's flocking to Intel trying to save them from falling. and IBM has been declining in the market for the past 3 years so perhaps there is talk of moving tech VIP's over to IBM in order to help keep them afloat. At the end of the day we are all tech nerds who want to see great things happen with technology. We want to see innovation and improve performance staying cool and using less power! It wouldn't surprise me if the tech giants are working together to achieve the same goals using different methods! But that's just a theory, a crazy Terry theory, thanks for listening :P
  7. I have an old IBM ThinkPad R52 running Windows XP Professional which I have been using as a spare computer. I noticed the hard drive was about to crap out as the laptop was running very slowly and the drive was making some very abnormal clicking sounds. Everything was working up until this point so I used Macrium Reflect to image the drive and bought another hard drive. Shortly after I had done this, the hard drive gave up and fully stopped working. Today I restored the image that I made of the old drive to the new one and the laptop booted up fine but was still running slower than usual. I thought that it would be a good idea to use the IBM Rescue and Recovery environment to restore the computer to its factory settings. I rebooted the PC and used F11 to boot into the recovery environment and it brought up a message which read 'Missing Operating System'. Browsing through the backup, all of the files for the recovery environment are on the hard drive but the computer cannot find them during boot. Please help!!!

  9. I got an Pentium 4 IBM PC from one of my cousin. It was his old work PC and he was about to junk it when I decided to take it in my shelter and maybe try to have some fun with it. As a millennial, I have been blessed with hdmi ports for most of my adult life and forgot all about vga's and rgb ports. My goal with this pc: ideally it is to checkout the specs, it's probably not worth upgrading, and just have fun restoring it. Where im stuck at: I don't even know which port to use for video output. I've tried using just the VGA to VGA but my monitor doesn't support it. I've tried VGA to hdmi adapter with no results. See attached pictures for ports. Is there something that I'm doing totally wrong? Which port do I even use? What are these green ports, I don't think those are VGA so what are they? HELP!!! Thank you all in advance, Abu

  11. Hey guys, I just started out with Google analytics and AdWords as a side hobby and now I am certified for both of them. This made me wonder which other certificate I should acquire to be able to land a good paying job(though freelancing is my thing). Also I have started with aws and azure. This made me wonder whether I should get certified (entry level) with all the three platforms or just follow one for my career. My focus is big data and thus it would be great to get some veterans advice
  12. I just got an old IBM Person Computer 300PL and i'm wanting to make a sleeper computer with it. Any ideas or suggestions on what to put in it?
  13. I had this beautiful white with blue accents IBM case lying around for a while. It is a IBM 300GL from 1999, not that old but I just love the business, blocky design aesthetic IBM had prior the 2000's. Especially Aptiva and XT cases, these are among my favorites but they are difficult to find where I am and expensive indeed. Back to the 300GL, it still looks great, screams IBM all over the place and most importantly that is what I have available. This machine does not turn on, psu and motherboard are probably faulty, so I thought of migrating my Skylake pc inside of it to create an IBM sleeper pc stuffed with powerful components. I will keep the exterior as close as possible to the original, while inside I will do whatever is needed to fit modern hardware. Before I dismember this pc, I'll show you whats inside: Nothing too fancy here, just a Pentium 3 processor running at 450 Mhz, equipped with 256 MB of ram. Videocard is a first gen 3Dfx Voodoo graphics accelerator coupled with a S3 Trio 3D. A bit of a Frankenstein mismatch since the processor is from 1999 and the video compartment from 95/96. I have a better pc to run Win 98 games so it wont be too sad to disassemble this configuration. The only valuable object in my opinion is the Voodoo card, it still works nicely and I will save it for future builds. There is a shiny colored Windows 98 badge on the top panel. <3 Time to migrate the new hardware inside the case to see what works and what is not. My Skylake build consists of a 6700K @ 4.3 Ghz, 16GB of DDR4 ram, an Evga GTX 1070, a Corsair power supply with cablemod custom cables and a Noctua NH-u12s tower cooler. Here is how my hardware looks inside the IBM: Despite the case looking retro-ish on the outside, ti is pretty new in the inside and my ITX motherboard fits nicely in the original mounting holes, and the spacing for the IO shield looks alright. There is ample room for the gpu and the top cover of the case features some ventilation holes on the side to allow fresh air to cool the gtx 1070. As you can see from the two pictures above, the 3 main challenges atm are the too tall Noctua cooler, the too large power supply and the case airflow. Can't do much about the heatsink, I will need a shorter one. I tried to move the power supply around but I couldn't find where to place it without interfering with the 5.25 slots where I am planning to mount a blu-ray reader. The only solution I can think of is to replace my full size psu with a small form factor one. I might be able to keep my custom cables, looking at Cablemod's compatibility list, the cables I own should be compatible with the Corsair SP 600, a 600 Watts SFX power supply that should fit with the pre-existing mounting holes on the back of the case. Last but not least is the airflow. This case wasn't obviously built with high airflow in mind so I will need to mod it allowing extra fans to be mounted in the front and the back. Here a quick sketch of what I have in mind: I will need to cut out some metal and replace it with two new plates that will allow fan mounting. The 2 80 mm fans in the front should supply enough air to the gpu and motherboard area, while the 2 60mm fans will exhaust hot air on the back while keeping positive pressure inside the case. I designed the 2 plates with Inkscape and I will laser-cut them out from an acrylic panel. Here you can see a screenshot of the project, I will link it once I get the first batch shipped and tested. That is all for now, I will update this post as soon as I have new things to mount and make fit. Hope you are enjoying this story, stay tuned for more! =)
  14. I have just received word from a source I cannot name that IBM is preparing for a 2017 power play AGAINST silicon giant Intel in the storage and networking spaces. In its competition against the likes of EMC, NetApp, Nimble, and Pure... IBM will be SHEDDING the high cost of integrated Intel-based processors and controllers in favor of smartphone insustry giant Qualcomm offerings. I tis no secret that All-flash and Adaptive Flash storage arrays are the new standard in enterprise market and this momentum surely fuels the decision by big blue to get as much pargin in this paradigm shift as possible before CACHE storage becomes the new standard sometime in 2018. This has HUGE implication, as AMD also stands to wrench away a good chunck of the consumer market with their RYZEN (formerly Zen) product line in the next quarter. Thoughts? Concerns?
  15. From the Washington Post So basically encrypt the data more, and faster, so it's harder to steal. Great. Still expensive as though, so small business probably won't adopt it.
  16. I know this is an odd topic but the question is quite simple, I'm interested in getting an old IBM System Z mainframe for the fun of it and use it to bring some enrichment to the people around me who are into this kind of stuff. I've seen videos of people destructively disassembling old units because they were to be scrapped and I tend to think there are hobbyists who could get some use of them, even just to mess around with. If anyone has any ideas as to where I might look for one, leave a shout here.

So basically, as I see it, this could drastically change how some forums work where there is a lot of question-answer conversations going on. A bot that observes any community enough could scan for questions and *accurately* respond to them if they're common enough. I think this is pretty great. And pretty crazy. And pretty scary. We may be talking with bots right now and not fully realize it.
  18. Hello fellow LTTers, I'm just seeing how many other people use or are fans of ThinkPads. I personally use a ThinkPad T420 with an i5-2550m and Nvidia 4200m GPU.
  19. IBM has just announced that they are going to invest $3 billion over four years to create a new internet of things unit to solidify their efforts in the IOT space. For those who do not know what the internet of things is the general idea is to place sensors in everyday objects and to network them together so that everything becomes smarter and responds to the users needs. In the past these billion dollar units have grown into substantial platforms that continue to grow such as Watson analytics. The unit will include 2,000 consultants, researchers and developers who will be working on both the hardware and the software that powers it. The aims of the unit are to build: As reported by ZDNet IBM's move may be in response to other companies such as Cisco and General Electric making large investments into internet of things devices. IBM may have an advantage in the internet of things space over other competitors due to their highly powerful analytics and cognitive computing services which would allow IBM to analyse all of the information that is coming from the IOT devices more effectively. This in turn would allow IBM to attract more partners for their ecosystem. Source: http://www.zdnet.com/article/ibm-creates-internet-of-things-division/
  20. I guess IBM really only makes processors for business applications but maybe google will start making boards for consumers? Could we see IBM competing with Intel and AMD in the future? http://www.wired.com/2014/04/openpower/?mbid=social_twitter
  21. Hi LTT. So I've just built a NAS and I'm about to install Debian on it from a USB stick to another USB stick (OS drive). Yesterday I had some problems with the installations so I've turned the computer on and off a couple of times. Today I continued to install Debian and had to turn the computer off as I was stuck in installation. When I turned the computer on again, the fans started spinning and I could see light from the RAID controller but no image on the screen. The screen turns on, then tells you there's no signal and go into standby-mode. I also experience that when I booted the system the fans started spinning, there was light from the RAID controller, then after ~20sec the whole system restarted itself and goes back to not showing an image. At this point I've booted the system several times without any problems but now it started to do this black screen and restart. So I've tried with a couple of different screens, a old VGA with a VGA-->DVI converter and a new Sony HDMI TV. Once with either screen I had an image appear but it's just stuck on this image/page. I tried to reboot the system a few times trying to get past this as it stayed like this for 15min or so. Once I tried to wait until something happened (a risky move if nothing will happen), something did happen though, it said something about the LSI controller. I didn't managed to read all of it or remember it. After that I figured it might be something with the LSI controller, so I tried to disconnect it from the system and now it boots without any problems. Conclusion: The LSI controller is causing the black screen or spontaneous restart. What could be a solution to this? Here's all my parts: CPU: Intel Pentium G3220T CPU cooler: Noctua NH-L9i RAM: Kingston HyperX Black 4GB 1333MHz Motherboard: MSI B85I Power supply: SilverStone SFX ST45SF-G Case: Lian-Li PC-Q25B Expansion card: IBM ServeRAID M1015 Storage: SeaGate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB x 4 USB for OS: SanDisk Cruzer Fit 16GB Other: Noctua NF-A14 PWM, Noctua NF-F12 PWM, Mini SAS to 4 SATA x 2, cable ties Cheers McLarsen.
  22. Story at /. Nvidia + POWER? The possibilities? No idea. I don't know what "POWER Architecture" is. What could this mean for Nvidia's Shield? Still, pretty cool. Thoughts?

Today when walking home I stumbled upon an old IBM keyboard (it is hard rubbish time). Naturally I took it home as it seemed like a waste to let something like that go to waste. So I was wondering; is it worth anything?
  24. Hey, I'm planning to build off an old IBM machine, the Aptiva from the late 90's or early 2000's. I have most of the build planned out, but I'm still looking for a front I/O panel that will fit in a standard 5.25" drive bay. I'm looking for a card reader, USB 3.0 and 2.0 hub, and front audio combined device, I'm currently looking at the kingwin fpx 004, but I don't need or want a fan controller. If anybody has any comments or suggestions about either a panel that would work or the build itself, I'm open to hear it! Thanks in advance!! New update!! Things have started moving a bit more slowly and unfortunately it's looking like this project may not be complete until October. I have done some modifications to the parts list however in the interest of improving performance and cost effectiveness. Additionally surprisingly I have successfully run the old components and all but the HDD work well. I may wind up selling them so stay tuned!
  25. Hi everyone! I have an insanely old motherboard (dating back to early 1990s), and am trying to restore it for fun. On the motherboard, there are these ports (see picture) that go to things like HDD LED, and things like that. I have no clue what port goes to what connector, and need help figuring it out. Thanks!
