DIY the fastest handheld for too much money warning: this is stupid, but if you want the fast handheld pc, this is an option. Also need to be very tech-savvy. (or very stupid (or both)) to actually do this. Question? What is faster than a ROG Ally but smaller than an itx pc? It's the motherboard of an alienware x17 12900hk (very important that it's that CPU(unless you know how to undervolt a 12700h(I don’t))). The reason for the choice is that it is too my knowledge. The smallest, most compact, motherboard that is available with a CPU that can be undervolted. The steps are quite simple really. 1: Acquire alienware x17 with 12900hk. For somewhat high resolution photos of the motherboard, I suggest the pictures from this seller on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/166369177351?epid=20059595121&hash=item26bc602f07:g:Xb0AAOSwjOllK8Tu&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0DuhiKAcX%2BQi8kj%2Bp2xSRBPLDRlrlPrIAX4CD%2BCNE9y55Mi66%2Bw%2FUGuati20mFkwWOdjK2SzJV%2BPmd%2F%2BQhj2u9lYQLoqFNR9pZVJpvG5AzQomZQqOFcPvGHXNJdzQnxrKTLW6m5330xPj1NaAABMF4W6DetNfPgokUWmXHYM54w%2FDxL8h8VncdjZxUMbC2efUUUzIvMPlc%2BJfnl0qY5Tx66oCUxks5mjwQtFy90RMK8RBYnjMzeTnB5faI7RTe%2BN6XtWT2Oqfm2MaeOFierC5Pw%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_LnvLabYw 2: Undervolt the shit out of it. So it draws as little power as possible 3: Figure out cooling, and battery. 4: now for the controls, some laptops complain if the keyboard is not plugged in to the motherboard, I don't know if that is the case here. If so, I suggest going with the clamshell style. Small keyboard on the bottom, with flip-up screen on top, and half of a sawed off controller on each side. 5 hopefully while reading this you have already been thinking of a design for this amalgamation to go in, if not you should probably get on that now. After figuring all that out, you should hopefully have a working handheld pc that still is guzzling power too hot is heavy and quite big. But faster than anything else on the market. Good luck an idiot. Disclaimers: This is stupid and perhaps impossible. This was written by someone that does not know enough about this kind of things to actually be writing this. And lastly I am dyslectic and English is not my first language so grammatical errors are inevitable.

Hi all, I'm looking to upgrade my now 4-5 year old Dell Inspiron 5482 2-in-1 because: Its battery life is becoming an issue where it can only be disconnected from power for 30 minutes, despite Windows claiming an hour or so. It will randomly decide not to turn on even when connected to power. It will drain the battery when it's supposed to be powered off. Its touch screen hasn't worked since I upgraded to Windows 11, despite Dell listing it as supported for the Windows 11 touchscreen driver at the time of Windows 11 release, although I can now find no record of such a driver (for Windows 10 or 11). I've been looking around for a new laptop, and I've come to a crossroads; Do I: Get one device, such as a gaming laptop. Get two or three devices, such as a regular laptop, a gaming handheld and possibly a tablet. I think the gaming laptop would probably be the better financial choice becuase, despite gaming laptops being expensive, it will have all of the budget/price going towards the one device so it's a mostly flat price whereas the dedicated device approach could work out cheaper or more expensive depending on the individual device pricing. I've read some comparison reviews of gaming laptops vs a laptop and gaming handheld and the outcome, as I see it, is that whilst gaming laptops can pack a lot of power into a small form factor, they are really just more mobile desktops. This is becuase oftentimes: You will need to be connected to a power socket to get the most out of the performance of the laptop; this tethers you to one location The screen needs to be at a particular angle to get good visibility, but this makes it difficult to use on a plane or bus or something if you want to game. Gaming laptops are heavy and noisy. I don't think there's any 2-in-1 gaming laptop In comparison, having two or three dedicated devices: You won't necessarily be tethered to a power socket to get the best performance out of the devices While the screen of a regular laptop would still have the same angling issues, you would at least be able to put your gaming handheld at whatever angle works for you and wouldn't run into the same issues with a plane, bus, or something similar. Both regular laptops and gaming handhelds can be heavy and noisy in their own ways but oftentimes aren't as heavy or nosy as a gaming laptop, so the weight and noise are a bit more distributed. To my knowledge, gaming handhelds generally aren't touchscreen, but you can get regular laptops in a 2-in-1 configuration. I'm leaning more towards the dedicated laptop and gaming handheld approach as it seems more flexible. For argument's sake this is what I'm thinking: If I went down the one gaming laptop approach then I'd probably get the ASUS Zephyrus G14 or one of the Lenovo Legion Slim series with an AMD chip. If I went down the two or three dedicated devices approach, then I'd probably choose between: Gaming handhelds: SteamDeck Asus ROG Ally (Leaning more towards this) Laptops: HP Pavilion Plus HP Spectre 2-in-1 ASUS Zephyrus G14 What I'd like from a laptop: Decent CPU and RAM: I'm generally quite taxing on my use of my current laptop, with the i5-8265U hovering around 50% at light usage and the 16GB of RAM hovering around 80% usage. Decent Screen: I never know where I'm going to be using it, so it being able to have a bright screen would be useful. I'd also like it to look good if it's used to watch movies or something. Dedicated GPU: I run 4 monitors at my desk via two Dell docks; one uses Intel UhD graphics, and the other relies on DisplayLink which I believe is a virtual GPU of some kind that always pegs my CPU. It having a dedicated GPU could help alleviate the performance hit of DisplayLink Optional wants: Thunderbolt 4: If the laptop supports Thunderbolt, then I could use an external GPU to power my 4 screens, which would alleviate the need for both docks or at least just the DisplayLink one. 2-in-1 convertibility: Having a 2-in-1 laptop can be useful in those rare situations where you are watching a movie in bed and don't need the keyboard or when you are working at your desk and don't need a keyboard. I do recognize that having a 2-in-1, particularly one with a detachable keyboard, often means giving up some performance as all of the hardware then needs to packed behind the screen instead of underneath the keyboard. Any suggestions, opinions, experiences or general feedback is welcome.

Hi everyone, I recently pulled out my old Sony Vaio handheld PC VGN-UX180P from storage and decided to finally replace the cracked screen I broke back in high school (it was kicked on the ground...) and rendered the touch screen unusable. Its a pretty unique little computer, very ahead of its time in terms of features. It runs Windows XP (some later ones came with Vista), has two cameras, a slide up keyboard reminiscent of the old flip phones back then, supports SD cards and a SIM slot and a USB2.0 port. A cool gadget that I'd eventually like to find some use for... So I replaced my screen with a new one from EBAY, but there was an issue with the touch screen - touching anywhere on the screen would peg the mouse pointer to the top of the display, however, I can still move it left or right. I can't move the pointer up and down at all. Note that this only occurs when I touch the screen, I can still use the built in mouse stick to control the pointer while not touching it. Does this seem like an issue with the new display or a bad ribbon cable? I want to know if I should request a refund/replacement for it while I still can. I already tried re seating the ribbon cables and cleaning the contacts with IPA. I also noticed a single dead pixel in this new display, so I'm leaning towards it being a problem with the LCD. Thanks!

Is it really the case that some games running on APUs and outputting to 800p-1080p screens need 32 or even 64?! Am I missing something? Is there an actual use case?

Summary A leaked video posted on Twitter (via Reddit & Imgur) has shown a basic version of the console with a very simple interface. This may not be the final product, but a good look at what is operating this device. Quotes My thoughts (take this article with a small grain of salt) Android? I expected Sony to make their own operating system. Of course, not a complete new system, but like a dumbed-down PS5 operating system. I do believe this being powered by Android may be a big possibility for 3rd-party games. This is shaping to be a better competitor to the Steam Deck. If Sony does it right, this can run Android games. More choices that Steam for sure. Sources the verge

Summary Sony has confirmed a handheld accessory for the PlayStation 5 named (for the moment) “Project Q” at the PlayStation Showcase. Quotes My thoughts Why does it have to be streamed!!!! We could’ve finally had a competitor to the Switch, but of course they are going for the streaming aspect. Haven’t we learned from Stadia? Now, I know those are 2 completely different things, but it’s still streamed games. It will be better because it’s only 30 feet away instead of 300 miles away. I think streaming games is pointless. You can tell me how good streaming games really is, but you need a good argument to change my mind. I also know that someone will switch me into thinking streaming is a good idea. But I’ll try to keep my opinion safe. Sources the verge twitter

Steam Deck has been making waves, but now that it’s delayed, could the Android-powered GPD XP be the best gaming handheld to hold you over through the holidays?

I've seen these android based retro handhelds going around like the retroid pocket 2 and the anbernic rg351 and was wondering if any could be used as a tablet gamepad for Cemu. The problem is, none of them I have seen features the full set of controls that a wii u gamepad has, most notably, the touchscreen. Does anyone know if there's a retro handheld that has the full gamepad control set and if it would work with cemu?

Hey guys, I just saw the upgrade video from Linus with his retro console and got a little bit inspired. So I tought I could upgrade my PsP 3004. The problem is I can´t really find some parts or even a website with kind of that stuff. What I´m looking for is: - A Mini-USB replacement to mayby USB-C? - An OLED-Screen? or just a better alternative to then normal screen - A better Wifi Card or just a workaround to connect it to the internet again (cause WPA2+3 is not working and I don´t want to change the encryption of my WIFI) - A power conector replacement for USB-C (Thats the easy part I guess) - And, if possible, a case without the UMD-Drive (I don´t use it) in exchange for mayby something else(for example a larger battery slot) I hope someone here has done this before and got a little advise for my where to start or just the advice to stop right away Thanks

My girlfriend is looking to start off and long-held initiative and start her own youtube channel. The challenge is that she needs a piece of mobile hardware that will allow her to take videos with high fidelity both in the house and on the go. For this reason, I've steered her in the direction of a DSLR with video capability...but seek the ineffable wisdom of the community for specific product recommendations, as the extend of my expertise ends with streaming webcams. Thank you and L&R for the insight.

Since i'm a freaking shill and I really want this thing to succeed because I think it is legit awesome I'd figured I'd let you all know that the second kickstarter for the Smach Z is online! This time around they have the working prototype on display, more technical info, benchmarks, a more reasonable goal and they managed to keep the prices low. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/smachteam/smach-z-the-handheld-gaming-pc?ref=project_share

Just wanted to know what you guys think about the Smach Z and if you were part of the kickstarter or plan to buy it when it comes out.

Hey, I'm interested in old(-ish) games to play and study. As I am 15, I have not played any games from the ps2 and game cube era and I think they're the most interesting from what I've seen. I know I can emulate these consoles on my pc, but I would rather have a hand-held console to play them with (Something similar the psp or the ds) I first looked at the raspberry pi 's latest generation, but as it turns out, it can't emulate these consoles... I then stumbled on the emulation subreddit and have found this (pgslab.com)... Which is basically a 3ds with an Intel Atom (x7-Z8750 Quad-Core 2.56GHZ) and Intel HD Graphics (600 MHz 16 cores) [I know nothing about the atom or the intel hd graphics... =D) They have an youtube channel where they show some emulators running on the hardware, but don't actually show the hardware: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSBW95JzJKqyHtii64pTvvg And also they have a spreadsheet with benchmarks of pc games on theyr's system: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1h-H-uvLzjXteFX4sgp-OwXQixwBGEHtmezSjv4uAb6M/edit#gid=1224150358 As this is still a prototype, my hopes aren't high, but I will keep an eye on it. Are there any other devices like this one? (Preferably one that is already out and not too expensive) Thanks!

Hi Everyone, I'm looking for a FeiyuTech Handle Battery Charger but it seems like everything is out of stock. Is there anything similar to it that I can use? It's specifically a mountable handle and is a battery at the same time. It's got a 1/4" mounting point and a USB port output.

My little brothers birthday is coming up and I thought of the perfect gift. An led game he had as a kid we used to love playing. But I can't remember the name of it for the life of me.. I was hoping someone would recognize my terrible drawing and be able to point me in the right direction. Handheld 4 player Point of the game was either to trap the led in your section or reflect the led from your section depending on game mode. Black and gray Transparent circular tube where the LED's would travel through. With dome in the center.. Each player had 2 buttons and an led screen 2 digit readout. Was created around the mid 90's Any help would be amazingly appreciated!

Even though the original "prototype" was an evolutionary dead end, the Smach Z team seem to be about ready to come through on their promise of creating a PC handheld. With built in AMD tech driving it forward, this sucker has a real chance of staking its claim in the niche area that it wishes to conquer, or fail spectacularly doing so. Just for funsies I'll predict now the most likely end result for most reviews of the thing. Most will likely say that it generally achieved its goals but at the price point that it currently has, it would be better to go with a laptop or a GPD Win unless you really want a handheld and either the GPD Win doesn't cut it for you or you stuck out on the preorder all those years ago or you're ok with taking a hit on functionality on a base model. If it ends up being a piece of crud...no prediction required there. Thoughts?

Hey i'm that annoying person who just can't let go of the idea of gaming on pocket PCs, and guess what guise, the Smach Z, that thing that has struggle to even become a thing for the longest time has finally reached the working almost final prototype stage, it's pretty thicc, but it's not quite final hardware yet, so hopefully they might be able to make it a bit smaller before release, for anyone interested, there's a bunch of videos from gamescom.

I'm Looking for a new keyboard that fits nicely in your hands (I'm Tired of using a full Sized Keyboard for my HTPC, i am in Australia and would like a nice low priced one. I want something similar to the Cideko Wireless air keyboard that Linus reviewed a few years ago, i would also like it to be able to power on my HTPC from the keyboard its self. ( I know i can set this up in the BIOS, What i mean is, I would like a keyboard with a power button for the PC) any good Recommendations? Thanks

Hello, LinusTechTipians, I've been contemplating getting a shield portable for gaming outside of the house. I have a mITX lan rig, but having something small that will easily fit into my bag (or even my pockets) would be great. I already have a laptop, although it's very basic and only meant for writing essays and and code (plus I don't want to spend another $1500 on top of the upgrades i made to my rig this year). So here's the point of all this, I was wondering if anyone here has had any issues with the Shield Portable? Is it laggy outside of the home (I'd be about 10-20 miles away from my rig)? Does it have decent build quality or will It end up breaking every couple of months, also is there just anything you'd recommend or do you have any thoughts on the shield portable? I've considered getting the tablet, but decided against it, I don't really want to carry around 2 more devices + their accessories. ~ Any, and all, input is welcomed & appreciated! ~

I am not necessarily thinking of doing this, but would an Intel NUC motherboard + CPU set work as a handheld if you could get a Lithium-Ion battery and a screen that would fit a handheld form factor? Also with windows but as a custom version. It would sort of be in the style of a Nintendo GBA.

NCIX: http://bit.ly/17clXDU Amazon: http://geni.us/3iPM The Nexus 6 feels like a pretty solid device, but Linus' conclusion about it may surprise you...
