  1. Fiber internet is not available in my area as we are about 1km away where it is available. Can I put 1km fiber or dsl so that we'll have better internet here?
  2. Ok so I have FIOS 500/500 plan. The modem is installed in my garage. From there the main internet line is in my office connected to my netgear x6s router. Key: 500mbps = 59.6 MB/second download speeds When I download games I get 25-30MB/second, which seemed off. So I unplugged my netgear router and tried the default router they gave me when they installed my service. All of sudden 50-60MB/seconds on BattleNet. Unplugged and replugged both router and did the test 3 times and same result. So went to the store bought and $300 netgear router (returned it today) and same result, slow speeds. So what the heck is going on? Note: please don’t say it’s the game servers. The tests were done literally five minutes apart multiple times.
  3. Important information: I have frontier internet (fiber) 500/500mbps Current router: Netgear Nighthawk X6S - Model: R7960P All tests were done on hard-wired internet Problem: So in the past whenever I downloaded games they would download at 45-55mb a second. Recently when I download games they hover around 20-30mb a second which is pretty much half as before. So I decided to try the router Frontier provided and all of a sudden downloads went back to 45-55mb a second. Obviously I want to use my Netgear router because it just simply has better wifi performance. So what am I doing wrong and how do I fix this problem? Update: still slow
  4. REPOST: STILL LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER. Important information: I have frontier internet (fiber) 500/500mbps Current router: Netgear Nighthawk X6S - Model: R7960P All tests were done on hard-wired internet mbps = megabits per second in the post above. And the direct translation I am using is 500 Mbps = 59.6 MB/second download speed. Frointer device: Arris NVG468MQ. Yes I do get a wireless signal from that device. Frontier router: Speedtest.com: D- 380.56 U-490.32 https://ibb.co/Rz3LZWh https://ibb.co/HVVT6Dc Netgear router: Speedtest.com: D- 490.28 U- 530.97 https://ibb.co/rbd0skp https://ibb.co/1MM964x Problem: So in the past whenever I downloaded games they would download at 45-55mb a second.
  5. hey everyone! currently for my house, i am running a network stack from unifi, (Pro-4 Gateway -> XG Ag switch -> 16 port POE, 24 Port Gigabit) and i was wondering if there was a cable that exists where it is a DAC cable, but SFP/SFP + on one end, to standard RJ45 on the other. and it it could be bidirectional that would be amazing, or if not i could make it work too.
  6. Hello! is it possible to use a desktop PC (HP Z400 workstation) as a server? I have a 2 port Fiber PCIE card installed in it but cant seem to find a way to access the information in my drive storage unit (apple Xserve RAID) at all on windows 10, or windows server 2016. Been trying to accomplish this for years, cant seem it figure it out. Any tips?
  7. Hello, so like 6 months ago i was getting some help on here but that thread died so im making a new one! So i have a Catalyst 4948-10GE and i got the x2 modules, a compatible transceiver and a fiber cable. But the thing is it just... doesn't work. Like nothing, computer shows no networks, and the little light on the switch next to the x2 isn't on. Is there something in the terminal i need to do to get it to work?
  8. Over the last few years myself and many neighbours, businesses etc have grown tired of the 1mb up 0.5mb down speeds in our area. Unfortunately fibre is not available yet and there does not seem to be any plans to have it come to our area any sooner, however, there is a fibre cabinet which is close but is just barley out of range... As a replacement myself and many other have been purchasing 4g, but, of course, that comes with the unfortunate limit of a max of 100gb / 30mb up or unlimited data with the sames speeds as we have with normal broadband. Would anybody happen to have any experience in community funding / pushing for fibre? If it helps, I am currently in London - Kensington & Chelsea / Hammersmith & Fulham which are considered to be some of the more prestigious areas of London, so almost everything is up to modern standards except a few parts ... It would be a great help for any insight you can offer as I believe 360p video has left me scarred. Also, don't worry about the location being so precise, It is a vast location I gave Thanks in advance, Lex
  9. Hey Team, Alright, this one is a doozy. Staring last week during a stream, I got kicked off StreamLabs. After tinkering with my web browser (Chrome), I noticed that I could not open Google.com, Facebook, etc. BUT! I was able to get to others, and have limited access. With YouTube, I was able to access it, but the thumbnails were not loading. With Twitch.TV, I was not able to play the videos, but the chat still worked. Now after dealing with Verizon, who is my ISP, and changing the Router and ONT, I still have the issue. Further more, and this is where it gets interesting, I only have this issue once my roommate turns his computer on and a little time passes. The known temporary fix is to reset the router, and not have have my roommate use his computer. Which I don't think he likes. Current facts: Once this starts happening, this starts affecting other devices Happens over Wireless and LAN New router New ONT (Optical Network Terminal) Internet connection come from the street ->ONT->Router->Switch->My computer and Roommates. Been like this for about 3 months and no issues till now. Virus and Malware checks come back clean. I have a brand new build from November 2019 His build is from 2016 Please let me know if you've seen this issue, and what was done to resolve. Thanks everyone!
  10. About a week ago I had my ISP come out to install fiber lines for gigabit internet. They ran the lines fine no problem (however they are still above ground in my backyard and have yet to be buried, said someone should be out in around 14 days to bury). It has been below freezing point past few days but no "severe weather", some light rain here and there.First day of having it installed and setup it ran completely fine no problems, at this point I had no router, just the one installed by ISP on my wall, so I was directly plugging into that, no wi-fi or anything. I purchased a xr500 Netgear pro gaming router after a day to set up all my home connections, internet seemed completely fine and stable for about a day. Late that night after purchasing my xr500 the alarm light went completely red and service was gone (on the wall "router", not the xr500), after calling my ISP and having them come out and take a look, according to them the connector from the line outside to inside the house was bad and they had to replace. They told me light signal coming to and from the house was fine but signal inside house was bad, which seemed to be resolved after the connector switch. Internet went back up and I had a planned gaming event with a lot of friends to attend to so I went to rush back into it. At this point I immediately realized discord was being extremely robotic for me and I was getting severe packet loss in discord. I spent around 2-3 hours on Tech support line with Netgear, seeing as if I plugged directly into wall modem everything seemed fine. Tech support told me my router might have remembered a bad data connection due to fiber line being messed up temporarily, performed multiple factory resets and tweaked some settings and didn't help even slightly. Had to get off the phone with tech support due to gaming event and just played plugged into wall modem. I noticed some roboting issues in discord at this point, just nowhere near as severe as if I was plugged into xr500.Finally I decided to return the xr500 for a new one to eliminate the chances of that specific model being messed up, and it didn't help at ALL, roboting issue still there severely, some webpages take forever to load, service seems spotty. I've been running pingplotter the past day or two trying to pinpoint whats going on, I had severe packet loss running to discord servers, twitter, and even google. However I decided to run a longer length pingplotter while plugged directly into wall modem, can post screenshots.Any advice and or suggestions would be great. Also if there's any IP's I need to hide on the pingplotter screenshot that would be nice to know, don't wanna accidentally give away sensitive information.
  11. Hey everyone! I'm trying to pull more from my FreeNAS Box to maximize performance. My development box which also hosts my FreeNAS install is running 2 Xeons, 144GB Ram, 256GB NVME L2arc, 3*3TB Z1 My client device is a 2014 MacBook Pro retina 15 inch with DGPU. It has 2 thunderbolt 2 ports and 2 usb3.0 gen 1 ports. Since Thunderbolt 2 gear is wicked expensive, I was thinking of using the USB ports for networking, and with the advent of 802.3BZ adding support for 5Gb/s and 2.5Gb/s being able to hit 5gbit on my laptop. My thinking is I could connect the server via SFP+ to the crs305 (a 4 port SFP+, 1 gigabit rj45 switch ), use an RJ45->SFP+ converter to connect to my current cat6A cabling, then terminate at the laptop with a 5G Ethernet to USB3.0 adaptor. I was wondering if anyone was aware if the CRS 30X (in my case I'm looking at the 305) supports the 802.3bz specification for 5G and 2.5G. Otherwise, if the adaptor supports auto negotiation with the usb to ethernet adaptor, do I have to care about the switch supporting it? Would it essentially just see the other device as a slow 10G device? More than happy to provide clarification, other data Felix CLC
  12. Our business recently got a 25/25 fiber connection through Spectrum Enterprise. Since we've gotten it, we've noticed, particularly when there is a little traffic on the network, the speeds will fluctuate substantially. Is this normal? With fiber being dedicated, I would have assumed that it was much less susceptible to speed drops from network load. We have about 15 people working in our office, all of which have file syncing enabled via OneDrive for business. Outside of that, it is really just email and other normal web browsing. I want to verify if this is a network or ISP issue because they claim we are "Over-utilizing" the circuit.
  13. My home internet is delivered through fiber. About 3 or 4 months ago, I had my ISP replace the "network terminal" after a complaint about the Wi-Fi connection not working during multiple times a day. They explained that the specific model of terminal I had was known for having a faulty wi-fi...thing (the part reponsible for sending out the wireless signal, I can't remember how it's called in English.), and they replaced it with a new model (both are Huawei models supplied by the ISP). After this switch, the Wi-Fi went back to working without fault. But a few hours later, I noticed my phone wasn't sending out messages, despite being connected to the network. After attempting to disconnect and re-connect, I saw the "no internet access" alert from the OS. Basically, the phone can connect to the Wi-Fi normally, but when it does, it's like the network stops working. Something I've noticed is that, when connected, if I just leave it there for a few hours, the connection will suddenly work for a few seconds and then stop again. This problem has been plaguing me ever since my ISP replaced the network terminal, and I've tried basically every solution online regarding the phone itself, with the exception of a factory reset. I'm pretty sure it can't be a problem with the network terminal itself, because my mother's laptop, her phone (which IIRC also runs Android 6.0), my sister's iPhone AND my other phone (which runs Android 5.0/Lollipop) all work perfectly fine when connected to the very same Wi-Fi. That said, I was hoping to get some advice here in regards to this issue, as most online solutions proved useless. Thanks in advance.
  14. I currently have a 500/500 Mbps PON Connection (don't know whether it is GPON or EPON), but the router supplied by my ISP performs extremely poorly.I've been planning to replace it with this GPON router :https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32799325864.html?spm=a2g0s.8937460.0.0.62fc2e0eRhskotspecially since this one has POTS port, eliminating my need to use a separate VOIP gateway adapter. Will this work if my line is EPON ?This is what my router page shows : https://imgur.com/a/vT2TEvY
  15. Hi All, I am having the same problem mentioned here ; My internet speed is 500mb/s and on my apple tv i get the full 500. On my pc which has a asus rog maximus x hero intel z370 and I am running all cat 7 cables to the modem i am throttled to 150 I have tried all everything mentioned here. I have tried putting my router QOS mode on and giving prio to the pc i have tried turning it off. I have re-installed all the drivers. i have tried to resetup the router from scratch. 16. Hello all .... Like the title says .... i have single mode fiber optic core..... a lot of it ... Pic with specs (I have several rolls) I need ideas to do something with it ... anyone? Thanks in advance!!!
  17. I have xfinity fiber coming into my home and we have their provided modem router combo box. The fiber line plugs right into the back of the modem. Do I have to use their modem or could I just get a fiber to ethernet converter?
  18. When does everyone think that 10Gb Ethernet should be a standard on all motherboards and modems/routers, i mean back when i migrated from dial-up to adsl 10/100 was normal now 10/100/1000 is normal and adsl+ hasn't been much better but with fiber coming to Australia and some people already have it eventually 10Gb Ethernet will be a normally everyday standard anyone out there have any thoughts to this?
  19. Hey Everyone! I am a streaming/content creator and I play Fortnite. I was thinking of ways I could up my streams and content and I thought about upgrading my internet. Only issue is that i'm already maxed at speeds but im still getting weird results. Im suppose to be getting 1000 and 20, but im getting like 800 and 17. Streaming and content is business and I talked with the ISP and we would be able to upgrade to fiber. I'm waiting for my response from what other speeds they have as of now, because getting a higher upload would be nice for streaming/bitrate so it isnt pixilated. I am also getting around 60-70 ping on fortnite and I am in North Dakota. When I got to my school and play on my laptop I get 20-40 instead. Would getting fiber help with this? I know its possible to get these speeds because ive seen it myself. I just want to get a lower ping and be able to stream quality content, would fiber help this? Id rather not have to move near the fortnite servers to get a better ping, haha. I have the money to be able from the "support a creator" program and from subs and whatnot, but getting fiber ran would be easier and cheaper then renting a apartment in a place in NY or California.
  20. Hey Everyone, first of, hope you're having a wonderful day! I'm looking to try and set up a fiber backbone that will realistically be able to do 10Gb today and if possible move to 40Gbe+ later on down the line. current infrastructure is 2 servers, one for vm's /plex provider(unraid), the other acting as both high speed nas and longterm HDD storage (timemachine backups and the like)(freenas). on the network we typically see 15 devices at the low point with a maximum of around 40. everything from phones to laptops to proper workstations, networked receivers etc. Everything is currently running 1gbe rj45, except for workstations which are a combination of 2 or 4 1gbe links bonded few things: reason for fiber backbone is that the total length of the space is 100' by 50' 2 floors, not to mention that we'd be able to upgraded the receivers down the line if/when the need or opportunity arrises for a network upgrade. my current thinking for the network is to deploy Mikrotik switches because of their support for 4*10Gb SFP+ on inexpensive switches (crs305 and crs309). For router was thinking going for the RB 4011 since it has fiber and ethernet, and if I go Mikrotik for the AP's the 4011 is afforded with a 4*4 MU-MIMO on 5GHz and 3*3 on the 2.4 band. Thoughts? Proposed set up is as such, from top down view https://imgur.com/a/O5l8bKV For AP's I'm fairly open. Was thinking either Unify or mikrotik,
  21. So at home I have gigabit fiber and a gigabit capable router. But when I download anything I can only get about 350Mb/s per second (over Ethernet cable). I ran a speed test on my desktop and got 350Mb/s, then I started the same speed test on two desktops at the same time and they both got about 300Mb/s. Then I transfered a 20 gigabyte video file from computer A to computer B. And I got the full gigabit transfer speeds. So I don't know what the hell is going on, any help? The router is the ASUS RT-AC68U
  22. I have recently started freelancing heavily for a small production company here in LA. They have a setup of (4) 2010 Mac Pros fairly maxed out. They all have 4GB Fiber cards installed and networked but they are compatible with 10.6.8 at most. They haven’t been using them for anything lately, but with the addition of myself we will be pulling in a lot more work with very large 4K Raw video files + Proxies. We are looking to upgrade the systems to work with the fiber system again so we can have (1) Mac Pro be the storage server and the rest of them just attach to it (for now, a larger SAN/NAS will be the goal later, but that will also need these new fiber cards). *MAIN QUESTION* Does anyone here know of a good fiber card(s) that works with a Mac Pro 2010/2012 Model and 10.10/10.11? Our research hasn’t been very fruitful, as there seems to be very little documentation that’s consistent. We have contacted companies that could help but they are very protective of their information so they can charge over a grand per machine minimum to install a mid-range fiber card. One card we have found that looks to work fine is the LSI7204EP. It has enough speed for what we are doing (10GB would be cool but we don’t pull nearly that much, this isn’t LTT) and the price is right. However, the price seems low so we are just wanting to be very sure first. Personally I don’t like using the Mac Systems but that’s how it is here now when I work out of the studio. Any information or advice is very appreciated! Thank You!
  23. Hello I have recently installed telus fiber 150 I think and they gave me this white box that the fiber connects into...I would like to hook up another router and have my own privrate network other than my family's, how would I go about this? there is a few "data" ports on the back of the white box and Im not quite sure but it seems like only data1 works.. I would like a seperate network from everyone else, I have a cheapie router its a linsys e1200. Thanks for reading, dont know much about the rules on LTT forums nor about networking haha.

  25. I just got a 100Mbps Dedicated Duplex line Fiber to the Home ( I mean seriously not even multiple passive splitters ), they convert 2.5 gbps incoming line to 25 X 100mbps connections ensuring no slow downs for $15 dollars a month with absolutely NO Data Caps. They do use Carrier Grade NAT (so we cant use it for server purposes unless you pay $75 a year for static IP). Its not even economies of scale, the next known customer for this particular ISP lives 250m away from me and I am on the main road with multistory apartments on all sides. They also told me the only reason they do not give Gigabit right now is that almost everyone has only 100mbps RJ45 Ports in their routers ( P.S In India we buy the cheapest routers and access points). Although they can literally convert all the connections to gigabit by just removing their limit. And they are just withholding till another ISP matches their current prices after which my ISP can quickly enable Gigabit and start taunting about the new USP. This is soo wierd to me, I mean 2 years ago my broadband was 2 mbps till 8gb 512 kbps afterwards. Now I have 100mbps no FUP fiber for a lesser price. Just Wow. Let me know how much do you pay for your internet
