  1. hey everyone! currently for my house, i am running a network stack from unifi, (Pro-4 Gateway -> XG Ag switch -> 16 port POE, 24 Port Gigabit) and i was wondering if there was a cable that exists where it is a DAC cable, but SFP/SFP + on one end, to standard RJ45 on the other. and it it could be bidirectional that would be amazing, or if not i could make it work too.
  2. My PC has an 8 TB hard drive, that has less than 1 TB free. I am planning to move my PC into a new case (a Fractal Design R6) and I figure that's as good a time as any to add more storage. I was thinking adding a 6 TB hard drive would do the trick. Looking on Newegg I discovered that the least expensive 6 TB hard drives are labeled as "Enterprise" drives. My understanding is that normally you wouldn't use an Enterprise drive in a desktop because they are engineered to work in a more rigorous server environment and thus more expensive. It would follow though that an Enterprise drive should work fine in a PC. Am I wrong? Newegg has a Seagate 6 TB Enterprise drive on sale for $94.50. https://www.newegg.com/seagate-st6000nm0034-6tb/p/N82E16822178526 There was an even cheaper one for $82, also Enterprise, but it said in the description it would not work in a personal computer. The one linked above does not say that (that I noticed) but does say the firmware is "maximized for Enterprise RAID systems." I do not plan to use a RAID configuration. They have a 6 TB Seagate Barracuda hard drive on sale for $112, but it is labeled refurbished. A hard drive is not the kind of product I would be comfortable buying refurbished. Is the $94.50 Seagate drive fine to add to a PC? If not should I reconsider a refurbished model? Or just resign myself to spending between $150 and $200? Thanks in advance for the advice.
  3. Hey guys, this is gonna be a small build about upgrades to my home server. I had ran out of space for Plex storage since I was running just a small array of random 500GB used HDDs. I'll list my current specs and estimated specs down below, changes in BOLD. Feel free to ask some questions or make some recommendations! I changed the stock cooler out for the Noctua a little while back. I will also be adding a RAID Expander to accommodate the extra drives. I currently have only bought 4 of the 6 8TB Ultrastar Drives so I still have two more to purchase. Current Specs: CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2690 | GPU: NONE | Motherboard: SUPERMICRO X9SRL-F | RAM: 64GB (8x8GB) Micron VLP DDR3-1600 ECC | PSU: SUPERMICRO 665W 80 PLUS Bronze | STORAGE: 2x Samsung 860 EVO 500GB (RAID 1) & RANDOM DRIVES (RAID 5) | COOLER: Noctua NH-U12DXi4 with 2x Noctua NF-F12 iPPC 3000 | CASE: SUPERMICRO CSE-842TQ-665B 4U | OS: vSphere 6.7 U2 | Planned Specs: CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2690 | GPU: Quadro for Plex decoding | Motherboard: SUPERMICRO X9SRL-F | RAM: 64GB (8x8GB) Micron VLP DDR3-1600 ECC | PSU: Supermicro 500W Multi-Output Redundant Power Supply (PWS-503R-PQ) | STORAGE: 4x Samsung 860 EVO 500GB (RAID 10) & 6x 8TB WD Ultrastar Datacenter (RAID 10) | COOLER: Noctua NH-U12DXi4 with 2x Noctua NF-F12 iPPC 3000 | CASE: SUPERMICRO CSE-842TQ-665B 4U | OS: vSphere 6.7 U2 |
  4. Just Wanting to talk about Hyper-V Virtualization on Enterprise hardware. Things like old Dell Poweredge R610's running windows 10 with Hyper-V? Dell R620 Overkill for virtualization for a startup? Differences between Hyper-V as an operating system and\or running as an application. Feature differences between Hyper-V on Windows Server and on Windows Pro installations.
  5. Hi, Im trying to access the web interface of a AP from 3com model AP9152 but the browser returns error do access. I can ping the ip and log in via telnet. I ran a port scan and turns out that only port 23 is open. Is there a way i can open a port to access the web interface? thanks
  6. The Open Compute project, The project from the major tech companies to cooperate on server hardware development, has started working on scalable liquid cooling for servers. There are multiple engineering groups working on the parts for liquid cooling and immersion as can be seen in the opencompute project youtube channel There is a nice video summery of the effort in the video OCPSummit19 - EW: Advanced Cooling - Eco-system Enabling of Liquid Cooling Ingredients Maybe Intel or other vendors will allow linus to take a look at what is being done. considering the scale of production it would probably trickle down to consumer hardware sooner or later.
  7. Hello! New to the forum and hoping to get some advice. I have a MacBook Pro and an iMac in my home office to edit 4K videos, store Blu Ray movies (in MKV format), and I am hoping to build or buy a NAS server within this year. The NAS will have multiple users pulling movies, 4K MKV Blu-rays, and other files as well. The performance of enterprise SSD is by far better than the consumer SSD (endurance, speed, etc...). I just bought a 'Samsung MZQLB7T6HMLA-00007 PM983 7.6TB 2.5" PCI-E 3.0 x4 SSD'. For my Macs to recognize the SSD, I purchased the 'Sonnet Echo Express SE III Thunderbolt 3' and a 'Funtin PCIe NVMe SSD Adapter with U.2'. I chose the Samsung SSD because of an acceptable mix of performance and price. Do this setup makes sense? Should I look into other options? Will MacOs be able to recognize the SSD? I don't want to use HDD because of the low speeds and the fact that I have to have RAID to achieve speeds. Please help me determine if I made the right choice. Thank You
  8. I've got two old HP DL165 G7 servers that I've been using for lab environments at work along with folding and some other random things. I'm trying to install Server 2012 R2 now and when it gets to the Windows Installation screen the server just blue screens and restarts. If I dissolve the RAID and run 1 drive in AHCI the computer doesn't blue screen. The server was running Server 2016 and running folding jobs before this.... Maybe folding fried a CPU??? I watched temps and they never got above 50°C so I don't think thats the issue. Any ideas? The server restarts too quick to see what the error code on the blue screen is. Thanks in advance
  9. I am starting to look into getting a used rack mount enterprise grade server. I am new to this realm of hardware and I am not sure what servers would be good choices or not. I plane to use it for VMs and a Plex server. I want it to have many cores (12 or more) and support for about 64GB of DDR3 RAM. I need to have room for drive expansion beyond the few multi TB drives I have. Non-proprietary connectors and psus would be ideal. I would appreciate any recommendations of what servers to look at or even building my own rack mount system.
  10. Back in 2014, HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) were working on a never before seen type of computer, called The Machine, where it uses memristors, huge amounts of ram, and silicon photonics. As time went on, reality started to set in, by using never before use technology, bring the entire project out to market, was proven to be impossible. But the folks at HPE aren't giving up that easily and last week, the have revealed a working prototype. The Machine features technology such as The X1 module But the true intentions of The Machine, isn't just about fast moving data at long distances. It's goal was to use NVM (Non-Volatile Memory) a replacement to DRAM, where it consumers less power and low latency optical interconnects. HPE's vision of The Machine, was to use vast amounts of NVM memory, accessible across many SoCs. It's also possible it might work together with current accelerators, like those from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD. While HPE's The Machine, probably won't be out of prototype stage anytime soon, but what's they've learned and designed with The Machine, might be implemented into their future systems. HPE's The Machine, also known as "Memory Driven Computing" https://www.extremetech.com/computing/240248-hp-demonstrates-next-generation-computing-prototype-machine-comes-together
  11. I have just received word from a source I cannot name that IBM is preparing for a 2017 power play AGAINST silicon giant Intel in the storage and networking spaces. In its competition against the likes of EMC, NetApp, Nimble, and Pure... IBM will be SHEDDING the high cost of integrated Intel-based processors and controllers in favor of smartphone insustry giant Qualcomm offerings. I tis no secret that All-flash and Adaptive Flash storage arrays are the new standard in enterprise market and this momentum surely fuels the decision by big blue to get as much pargin in this paradigm shift as possible before CACHE storage becomes the new standard sometime in 2018. This has HUGE implication, as AMD also stands to wrench away a good chunck of the consumer market with their RYZEN (formerly Zen) product line in the next quarter. Thoughts? Concerns?

  13. If you are a pirate or just someone with a windows license key or needing isos for Virtual Machines, it becomes frustrating if you lose your iso. Now Microsoft does not let you download the iso, and most PCs have the key in their bios. I have a solution. These are all the original isos for windows (EN) every version and every subversion. I will not be giving out product keys but these are the original isos from Microsoft, I will link you to the Microsoft iso hashes so you can verify if you do not trust me. I am happy to help you all and anyone who ever needs windows isos. I took a lot of time on this so I hope you found this helpful. It was so hard to find ones with the original hash so I hope you like it. 15. Hey everyone, I am probably not the only one who still uses the providers cheapo all in one wireless LAN router, but I am ashamed to admit it. I tried everything possible with positioning, channel selection and so on to get the best out of that puny little thing, but now it ends. I finally got some money in my hands and now I'm in the market for a reasonably priced yet pretty descend wireless router. It should have dual band (2.4 and 5 GHz) wireless, a multi antenna setup for at least a theoretical 300 MBit/s speed (I know that real world performance differs quite a bit), descend range and obstacle piercing (and yes, I know that 5GHz doesn't pierce obstacles as well as 2,4 GHz does). So what do I want to know from you guys (if I already know so many things ) ? I watched Linus's rants about consumer routers, but I don't have the hundreds or thousands of € (yes I'm from Europe ) that the most enterprise solutions require. Then I found out about Ubiquiti's Unifi Ap line which is also posted under their enterprise models and I wondered how well I would fare with one of those. That is what I require of you guys. - experiences - recommendations . . . you know the deal So I hope you guys an help me out here Thanks already Andy
  16. I know this is a bit of a shot in the dark, but perhaps someone may have some insight for this. I have been tasked with creating a front end for an OSD deployment using MDT for Windows 10. They want the front end to create a Zero Touch experience at the physical machine. Orchestrator is currently out of the running due to a lack of subscription for this. A basic webpage with hooks to the MDT database is possible, but each machine needs to be added to a collection for SCCM. Any sysadmins around here tinker with Win 10 deployment yet with some thoughts on how to proceed?
  17. Hi guys, I was just wondering, what is the best way to create nearly identical FreeNAS machines for redundancy and backup purposes? My plan, without insight into it, would be to simply make 3 hardware identical machines, set up one fully, then import it's config file to the other two and change their IP addresses. Is that acceptable, or is there something else that must be unique to each FreeNAS installation that a config file carries with it? I can't imagine anything that would be like that, except for maybe encryption keys and things of that nature. Maybe hardware IDs being different would mess things up (i.e. MAC addresses for ethernet ports being different). But I'm not sure. Has anyone tried something like this? Thanks, Vitalius
  18. Hey Guys, So... I'm in a unique position where I have legitimate access to Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB and valid licensing. My current setup is a Threadripper 1920X, ASUS Zenith Extreme, 32GB RAM, EVGA 1080 FTW, 250GB Samsung 960 EVO. I've got Windows 10 Pro installed currently however I get terrible stuttering even when closing a program or game and moving to a separate window? It's a little strange. I also really hate the way Windows 10 decides to update on my machine. I understand LTSB obviously doesn't receive feature updates (which I'm more than fine with) and is lovely and lightweight as I'm using this as a Windows VM on a parallels install. I understand it receives just essential security updates but am concerned over software compatibility. Does anyone here know of any obvious concerns I should have over this (i.e. nVidia software won't work or perhaps some other common app won't)? I also have no intention on using the Windows App Store, I realise this isn't available on LTSB. I plan to rebuild the PC tonight and will be putting on LTSB (providing no issues).
  19. Hey guys, lately im running a 6,5 tb jbod with 4 drives on windows (1 drive is broken and now im fucked up) and my own created nas with a linux and KVM and some VM´s with 1 TB storage. Now I wanna change my full storage solution to another level. I´ve got an old i5 with a z77 mainboard and wanna upgrade this server with a 10 gbit sfp+ nic, raid card and a shelf conected via sashd. I wanna a raid 10 with 4 drives. Here is a small list: NIC's Shelf pref Netapp,hp,dell SATA drives raid card (0,1,5,6,10,15,16) hdd My other Setup see below Please give me some advise or other different products you prefer. 20. Hi, Kinda new to the forums, Where should i post this kind of topic ? I am working on a way around being able to Block Windows 10 pro Store and Metro App's for Standard users and would love some help. This feature was removed and now only enterprise has this feature. (I know its not the most exciting thing in the world compared to Titan X's and stuff) Will add more Method Soon/Tommorow. Quick Version : Use a free application called "take ownership" and take ownership of the Metro/Windows Store folder and block Standard users from accessing the folder or reading or writing from the folder. (kinda works but still has kinks will go into more details when i have screenshots and such) Thanks Guys
  21. Hi I need your help does I get with my Enterprise Version (not the LTSB version) The November Update? Timezone GMT +1

  23. Hi guys, Let me preface this with the server specs: AMD Opteron 6212 Interlagos 2.6GHz 8-core CPU SUPERMICRO MBD-H8SGL-F-O ATX Server Motherboard Wintec Server Series 64GB (4 x 16GB) ECC Registered DDR3 1600 Four 4TB Western Digital RE 7200RPM Hard Drives in (what I assume to be) RAID 10 Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD for L2ARC/ZIL (NOT INSTALLED YET) Two Supermicro AOC-USAS2-L8E 8-Port SAS 6Gb/s Internal Raid Adapters (two 4TB drives attached to each) So, imo, this thing should be pretty darn fast in terms of read/write speeds. Relative to normal storage systems. Here's the thing, I'm getting 20-25MB/s copying from the RAID 10 to the same RAID 10 (moving files from one volume to another on the RAID). I don't understand why it's so slow. I feel I would get faster speeds on a single drive by itself. I know it's in RAID 1, but RAID 0 should help that. Note the "what I assume to be" RAID 10. The GUI isn't clear how it goes with setting up RAID volumes. It was a 2x2 square, so I assume each column represents a mirror and each period represents a stripe. I mean what else could it be? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Vitalius P.S. I noted the 120GB SSD for the L2ARC and ZIL because I'm not sure how it will affect performance. Hopefully a lot.
  24. I'm looking for networking switches for a small business. Small in this case means 60+ employees, 100+ devices, and things that go along with it. I'm completely uninformed about switches. I either don't know, or know very little, about what jumbo frames, SNMP, PoE, QoS, LACP, or Port Mirroring are, I can guess and Google, but knowing what they are isn't as important to me as knowing what they are good for I think. I've also seen that some switches have modules you can attach to them. And that some are "stackable" (I can only imagine what that means). There are things called "Layers". I assume this is something involving security? No idea. The only manufacturer I know of that has a decent reputation in regards to these kinds of switches is Dell. I know nothing of anyone else. If anyone can give me information on what to look for and who they trust for these types of things, that'd be great and I'd appreciate it.
  25. So, I got a laptop for free. But it has windows 7 enterprise on it, so I can't use the assistive technology free upgrade path. Is it possible to rid the os of the enterprise license so it just has a standard license?
