Summary In yet another sign that Intel's efforts to rebuild its engineering corps might be swift under the new incoming CEO, Intel announced today that Sunil Shenoy, a 33-year Intel veteran who left the company in 2014, will be returning to the company as the senior vice president and general manager of the Design Engineering Group. Quotes My thoughts Good news, right? In all seriousness, I hope that intel will get up and get moving. Seems that what linus said in that one WAN show is true," Key talent attracts key talent". Hi, so I am currently running an HP Specter x360 13 inch, with an intel i7-7500U and 8GB of ram. I am currently and engineering student and the laptop has being doing alright until I started doing a lot more of 3D modeling in SolidWorks and AutoCAD, and that's when I started to run into problems. I have a $2000 budget, also plan on playing some games on the new system such as Squad and racing sims. Any recommendations would be great thanks !

I'm curious, how bad would this be after you rip and tear it apart such as to force fit it into the role?

Budget (including currency): Total PC build: $1000-1400 USD Country: United States Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: CAD, Oracle Virtual Box, VB & Java programming, Star Wars Battlefront II (2017), Civilization 4+ Other details (Refurbished) Intel(R) Core(TM) I5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.20GHz, Installed RAM 12.0 GB, Win 10 OS Hi all, I am going into aerospace engineering, likely going to be doing CAD and I already have done some programming, and am needing to upgrade (seriously upgrade) my PC. I am also a gamer, who likes to play new-title, high-graphics, FPS and RTS PC games. I was wanting some advice as to what processor I should invest in? I am not partial to Intel or AMD. I've been looking for a laptop for college as an engineering student. I find that I have been searching a lot but struggle to find something with good battery life or the fact that 10 key-less. I've looked at the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo UX582 but I worry about battery life and uncomfortable ergonomics when typing. I think a dell xsp would be good and considered sacrificing the 10 key. Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions with adequate performance and battery life.

Hi. I recently bought new computer parts for the pc I'm building (list can be seen here if needed: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/fxVmbj) and I was wondering how I could move my old hard drive into the new pc. How would I safely remove my harddrive from my previous build with my new one without the drivers of the old rig? My thoughts are I clean install but when do I unplug my hard drive and how do I safely do it.

The FGC (Fighting Game Community) has grown 10x in the last decade, and is only expanding. There are many games which find their own comfortable groove in the community (even the older ones), which doesn't clutter the scene, but rather diversifies it. The rise of some of the most iconic personas (pro-players) have sprung up through the FGC, and so have some really solid titles, which get played decades after they release. My Question is simple - What is the MOST FUN Fighting Game To Watch as an professional E-Sport? I'll Start: Super Smash Bros. Melee - The game's Meta is almost solidified, distinct player personalities, interesting story-lines, HYPE moments. Let me hear your picks, guys!

I want the True Geeks version of a super list with all windows keys and codes!!!!! I want the big boy list of codes that involve isolating and or resetting hardware on the motherboard to being able to shortcut my way out of an issue when my display goes dead on my laptop for absolutely no reason while dgpu is engaged with no way to switch to the onboard igpu and your fingers are allergic to dismantling anything on the motherboard. Im tired of seeing the same old lists out there for your more normal users. So I hear that: Win+cntrl+shift+B can reset Gpu. Has it worked for anyone else and tell me more like these!

Looking for someone to help me build a custom desk and come up with the actual design and build process. There are some technical challenges that I would like to accomplish, like a height adjustable keyboard tray, that I want to add, which is why I'm asking for a woodworker/engineer. This would most likely be a weeks long or months long project, as there are some other features I'm sure I will want to add along the way. If you know anyone like this or know anyone that might be interested, please let me know!

I looked through the forms and found some projects that had similar results, but I'm not sure if any of them actually do everything I'm needing. So here goes... I am an engineer, my wife is a graphic designer. We both need computers that can handle a pretty heavy load. The software that I use most is AutoDesk Inventor and she primarily uses Adobe Illustrator. I would like to build a tower that we can both use and have different accounts(we have different definitions of "clean desktop" and "file management"). The end result that I need is a single tower that we can log into our individual accounts from individual separate devices and run our programs without any major sacrifices. For example, she is in the living room designing something in Photoshop on her laptop while I'm in the garage working on something in Inventor but all the processing is being done by the tower in a closet. For right now I only need to be able to connect via LAN, but eventually a WAN connection would be cool. I don't know if this is possible or not. If so is it cost effective, do the client laptops have any specific hardware requirements(other than internet connection), and will peripherals(i.e. wacom tablet or 'gaming' mouse) work fine over the connection? Any help would be fantastic!

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a laptop. I'm in college, and my budget is roughly $1500USD. I need it for use as a daily driver. Tasks/Programs: MySQL work RedHat programming Linux Administration Basic Office Applications Chrome in background (needs hefty amounts of RAM) WireShark PuTTY Cisco VPN MATLAB Personal Wants (Software) Want to use it to store my DnD stuff, like maps and such, so I've been looking at 2 in 1's for drawing purposes I'd accept being able to do light games like Minecraft, Undertale, Terraria, but ideally I'd like to be able to play the Dark Souls series on low settings Skype Photoshop Premiere Note taking on OneNote with drawings to accompany examples Light drawing for small art projects Personal Wants (Hardware) I'd like it to be reasonably portable, enough to carry around every day , so roughly 4.4 lbs or so Long enough battery to where I don't have to live next to the outlet. Preferably 7+ hours on a single charge I really like Razer's aesthetics, but I'm a sucker for any black aluminum finish I use an external GPU with my sister's Razer Blade Stealth for LAN parties, so Thunderbolt 3 is greatly wanted, nearly mandatory for me I'm not a fan of flashy branding and aesthetics, hence why Razer laptops aren't my preference I like metal construction for the better cooling it offers as opposed to plastic and carbon fiber So far, I've been considering the New Spectre x360 15 inch 2018 edition, the XPS 15 2-in-1, both of which release in the spring, and the Eve V. What kills it for me with the Spectre is the bulk, price tag, and I'm not the biggest fan of the copper accents. The XPS, price, silver and carbon fiber look. Eve V, the flimsy hinge on the kickstand, the low amount of levels of pressure on the pen, as well as the super low power processor, I'd much prefer a 15W chip as opposed to a 4.5W. So if anyone has any suggestions, that would really help me out guys. Thanks!

Howdy ya'll, What type of hardware runs structural analysis software the fastest? I'm a noob so please explain like I'm 5. I'm specifically curious about running Midas Civil. https://en.midasuser.com/product/civil_overview.asp Some of my complex bridge rating models take as long as 15 hours to run and produce over 100 GB of data. The record in my office is over 400 GBs for one bridge!! The computers at work are powerful-ish with i7 processors and 32 GB of memory and SSDs. If I had say $3,000 to spend could I build a machine that could cut the processing time in half? What would it look like? Would it be similar to a mining machine or 4k video editing machine? Do I need a CPU with as many cores as possible for this type of computing? This is all that Midas provided as far as system requirements. CPU Pentium IV or better performing PC processor (Pentium IV 3GHz or greater recommended) Memory (RAM) 1GB (2GB or greater recommended) HDD Space 5 GB (30GB or greater recommended) Video Memory 128 MB or greater Video Card GeForce NVIDIA type video card recommended (On-board video card is not recommended.) System RecommendationsIn general, better system will make the analysis and software performance smoother and faster. (higher memory Ram, local drive storage, etc.) There are system recommendations : System Recommendations Operating System - 64 bit operating system - If the system can handle GPU, that is even better. HDD Type SSD (Solid State Drive) Graphic Card NVIDIA G-Force Line Graphic card

Hi everyone, first of all, thanks for reading. I'm starting a "bachelor degree" (I don't really get the US education system, so I'll call it a career). I just have 2 questions: 1) Is software engineering considered an "Engineer degree" worldwide? I ask this because I've heard that software developers themselves often study Computational Sciences, and not a career such as software developing/engineering itself. So I'm wondering if the career I'm taking is considered as such. If so, are there degrees such as Software Engineering in your country? I'm from Mexico BTW. 2) What should I start learning before entering the University. What programming language should I start studying, I'm halfway into python and I know some JS. 7 Thanks in advance for reading, and have a nice day.

So as the title says What are your guys opinion in Mechatronics Engineering Field? I'm planning to do Mechatronics field but I keep hearing conflicting information about this field. Some say there will be great opportunities ahead as the world becomes more and more technology dependant while others say a mechatronic will never get the same preference as an Electrical or a Mechanical Engineer. I've also heard some people say that the courses are very tough Also another thing to note is there are very few collages with mechatronics in my country but I would like to know how common is it in your country and how's the present situation in job opportunities and also potential of a mechatronic engineer in the future Personally I'm a curious kind of guy, does research on science and technology, love electronics (both mobile devices & computers), generally interested in building stuff (robots, computers, heck even ikea stuff)

Google has posted their own guide to becoming a successful Software Engineer. The guide is a suggested path for University students to develop their skills but personally I don't see why someone younger couldn't do it if they have the dedication to accomplish the goal. Anyway, they do note that you should be aware of the following before/when using the guide: I think its great that Google has done this so people know what the industry wants. Though, of course, a lot of other companies want other things from you so just because Google suggests C++, Java or Python as an object oriented programming language to study, doesn't mean all companies use these. (Just a small tip, but hey those three are very big so what do I know ) THE GUIDE HERE: https://www.google.com/about/careers/students/guide-to-technical-development.html NOTE: I just noticed that some links lead to sites like Udacity which needs a subscription to use it. (Though, Udacity, I believe offers a free version of their service but without help from coaches and you do not receive certificates that you've completed things etc. But they do offer a 14 day free trial on the full version.) Just thought I'd point it out. Though, you can still use the guide from Google and the links that needs payment, find something else with the same content. Or pay if you really want that content of course!

Repost here! Original post here http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/287799-jide-ultra-tablets-from-the-ex-googler%E2%80%99s-android-microsoft-surface-replica-looks-os-looks-like-windows-8/ Microsoft’s Surface tablet has inspired a few clones during its short history, but the latest rip off comes from three ex-Google engineers. Jeremy Zhou, David Ko, and Ben Luk used to work on products like Google Maps and search at the web giant, and formed Jide Technology in 2014 to create a combined tablet and laptop. This REMIX tablet with a magnetically attached keyboard and a kickstand that all looks identical to Microsoft’s Surface tablet. Jide Technology hasn’t just stopped at the hardware, though. Even the "Remix OS" rips off Microsoft’s work in various ways, including a mail client that’s a straight copy. The Remix is built with a combination of plastic and metal that makes the device feel premium when holding it. Along the edges you will find stereo speakers, a headphone jack, microUSB port with an included OTG adaptor so you have a full sized USB port, and a microSD card slot that allows you to added up to 128GB of additional storage along side of your built in 64GB or 16GB of flash storage. Here are some additional specs: NVIDIA 4+1 processor 2GB of RAM 5MP rear and front-facing cameras 11.6" 1080p IPS display To charge the tablet, Jide has a proprietary 4-pin charger that plugs into the right side of the device. Along the bottom of the Remix Ultra Tablet is a 6-pin magnetic connector that allows for Jide's keyboard cover to connect to. The cover has a full size keyboard with keys that have very little throw and a touchpad that works well navigating the tablet. The Remix Ultra Tablet is currently running a customized version of Android 4.4.2 called Remix OS, though they say an Android 5.0 update is in the works. This modified version of Android was designed to work more like your classic PC but run all your favorite applications and will ship with Google Play certification. When you enter into the Ultra Tablet you are greeted with your standard Android home screen but the bottom of the screen has an extended application drawer. This space has your home and back on-screen buttons and can hold your favorite or most used applications. Additionally, when you have an application open in the background, the application's icon will stay in the dock so you can come back to it. The killer feature in Remix OS that is shown off on the Ultra Tablet is its multi-window support. When you open an Android application you can press the Jide logo that is displayed in the lower right hand side of the display and switch between the app's full screen mode or a window. Basically, when you want your app to run in its own smaller window, the tablet is tricking the app to run as if it was being used on a phone. Pricing & Availability: The Remix Ultra Tablet is going into production now to be sold in the Chinese market and is planned to begin sales of the tablet in the U.S. and U.K. in Q2 or Q3 of 2015. Jide believes that when it comes to the U.S. market that the 64GB model will cost $449 and that 16GB model will be available for $349. Additionally, the Remix will come to the market in several colors such as a "bright red" and a "clean silver." Images: Source: TheVerge, AndroidCentral, Main Website

I'm finishing up my Junior (grade 11) year in high school, so college is one year away. I've been thinking about majors, and I'm not sure what some of them pertain to. I've been a little confused about Computer Software Engineering, Computer Hardware Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. My friend's father is a Computer Software Engineer and he owns a company that creates statistical simulations of engines for motor companies, so I think I have an idea of what that is like. But Computer Hardware Engineering and Electrical Engineering is where I get really mixed up. I sort of want to have an idea of what I'm getting in to. Does anyone have any experience with these fields?

So I finish my bachelors degree in engineering(electronics and telecom major) this year.. I think I wanna study further like a p.g. in same field. I need to find good universities in another country like the US or in Europe or something.. I have read what the websites have to say about universities that are there.. but I always find myself questioning their credibilities.. I have a 320 score in my GRE and also decent scholarship.. But I dont wanna do my masters in India(where I currently live) I hope that some good experienced person stumbles onto this post and suggests some good alternatives for me... I'm open to all kinds of suggestions.. but please for the love of god no bullshit troll comments please.

Need Guidelines to becoming a electronic engineer!
HandsomeChow posted a topic in General Discussion
Hi, i am currently a student studying in the UK and still going through with my GCSEs I am planning to go to a American University for Electronic Engineering I need something unique about myself and stuff to do to prove that i am truly passionate about Electronic Engineering (E.g: The equivalent of writing scripts in CS but on a hardware circuitry level) I love building computers and i have built a few already in the past but building computers is easy and i need some advice on what should i do/build to show them who i really am? I have access to circuitry building materials and i need a student level project to work on. So i need some suggestions on what extra electronic computer/circuit building activity i should do? Thanks- 5 replies
