  1. Hello geeks, Well, I came accross an older Core i9-9900K that seems to have one failed core. In particular the 6th core seems to cause crashing. I bought this CPU from one guy who told me, he has an ASUS Z370 board with broken CPU socket (some pins were accidentally bent and eventually fell off of the socket when tried to be levelled back) and that this CPU on this crippled board only shows 3 cores, if it boots at all sometimes. So I thought, hmmm, chances to boot a healthy CPU on a broken socket are low but still, it can happen that the motherboard somehow reads the CPU just enough to POST. The guy even posted me with some puictures from installed Windows where it showed 3 cores, no HT. And since I did not meat many borken i9s I thought, alright, maybe the CPU is fine and it would be a good buy! Now, when I put the CPU in my known-good Gigabyte Aorus Z370 Ultra Gaming (latest F16b BIOS) + 2x8GB Samsung OEM DDR4@3200 and nothing else, the set boots fine, the CPU gets recognized and all seems okay. Then I added 1 M.2 SSD and a bootable Win11 USB... booted,...and crashed to BSOD with HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED. So I ran bootable USB with MemTEST86 and soon as it started in default mode, it showed many errors and eventually failed during too many errors detected. So first I replaced the RAM with another dual channel set of braand new 2x16GB Patriot Viper Steel. Same result as the pictures show. So I did some more testing but with only one single core enabled in the MemTEST86 and it went fine. So I went to BIOS and enabled only 5 cores of 8. I ran the MemTEST86 again...and, though only 5 cores were enabled and the program showed them as 5 active, the teesting failed soon again, pointing to core 6 again. So I went to BIOS and enabled only 4 cores of 8 and disabled hyper thread. I ran the MemTEST86 again...and, though only 4 cores were enabled and set active, the teesting failed again, pointing AGAIN to core 6. So before I throw the CPU in the bin, I thought if there is a way to mod the BIOS file and disable the 6th core directly. Any ideas?? Regards, George
  2. Hello, I was wondering if anyone can help me disable the auto overclock settings on my system. My temps are between 55 and 60 C on average, and start climbing to 80 C as soon as I run any game. Clock speed is always +4 GHz due to the settings in the BIOS I think. I believe the settings are overkill and causing my temps to rise. I've tried going into the BIOS to "disable" the auto overclock, but it's not as easy as it sounds. For someone without any background like me at least. I tried going over chapter 3 in the motherboard manual but I couldn't figure out what I need to change exactly. 3. Hi, Im using a Huawei P9 Lite Mini, and noticed that often, especially during car rides, it attempts to reduce noise, which works quite well all things considered, however during car rides, it makes all deeper sounds unhearable. It's like I'm underwater. Is there any way to stop this? It's really annoying.
  4. Basically I'm currently on 1709 with updates paused. I'm hearing tons of people complain about update 1803 and that for am graphics users like me it forces us to update to newer drivers which is an issue for me. If all of this I've heard is true how would I go about disabling updates or is there no way to do this
  5. Hi, everyone. I recently just upgraded my computer to a Ryzen 9 3900X with a MSI MPG B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI. How do I disable it to keep my CPU cool? My Specs: CPU - Ryzen 9 3900X GPU - NIVIDA RTX 2070 Super RAM - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 PSU - Corsair RMx (2018) 750 W 80+ Gold CPU Cooler - be quiet! Dark Rock 4 Pro
  6. While watching the 10/7/2022 WAN Show, at 1:40:26, Luke mentioned his annoyance with how Windows 10 will search bing while searching local indexed files. I've wasted quite a lot of time accidentally launching a bing search instead of finding the folder/file I know exists on my pc. So, after years of thinking that this "feature" sucks, I did a quick google search, "disable windows 10 search on edge" and looked at https://www.techbout.com/disable-web-results-in-windows-search-44034/. It's done, no more opening edge by accident. I followed step two, and it immediately worked; definitely worth a look if you have been a victim of an accidental bing search. Go check out the website but ill give a quick how-to here. Disclaimer, I'd always recommend backing up your registry before messing around with it. Open Registry Editor HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search Right-click Search and click New, pick a DWORD (32-bit) & Name it BingSearchEnabled & make sure that you set the value to 0 Done & Enjoy!
  7. So I recently started a Minecraft server on my PC and I would like to keep my PC running at night but I just can't sleep with the fan noise. Is there a way to turn off all fans on my pc (CPU,GPU,System Fans) easily without having to go into the bios. I tried it with msi Afterburner and Dragon Center but even if I set the fans to 0 they still spin a little. So basically a button I could press in the evening and having my PC run all night without any noise.
  8. If you are aware of updated information regarding telemetry and data collection in Windows 7 / 8 / 10, or know improved methods to disable it, please share it. For Windows 10 General Privacy Guide's for Windows 10 version 1803 and 1809 This guide includes instructions on how to disable or remove various invasive or unwanted aspects of Windows 10. Some of what the guide includes instructions for: - Basic Windows 10 set-up choices - How to remove various apps, such as Windows Store, and other native Win 10 apps - How to disable Cortana via registry - How to remove various telemetry services and scheduled tasks Some of what this guide shows instructions for may already be done by programs such as O&O ShutUp10. For 1803: https://fdossena.com/?p=w10debotnet/index_1803.frag For 1809: https://fdossena.com/?p=w10debotnet/index_1809.frag For 1903: https://fdossena.com/?p=w10debotnet/index_1903.frag Using an edition of Windows 10 that lets you set the telemetry as low as possible Windows 10 Enterprise and LTSC allow you to use the group policy editor to lower the amount of data-harvesting to Security Only. The Security Only setting may appear in Windows 10 Pro, but setting the group policy to that setting in Pro doesn't have any effect as the Telemetry Only setting is disconnected from any functionality in Pro. Licenses for Windows 10 Enterprise and LTSC can be purchased for cheap off of eBay. To set data-collection to Security Only in Windows 10 Enterprise and LTSC: 1. Open the group policy editor 2. Navigate to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Data Collection and Preview Builds 3. From the list of that sections policies, double-click on the policy titled Allow Telemetry 4. Set the policy to Enabled, and then set the policy to Security Only from the drop-down box 5. Click OK to close the window O&O ShutUp10 O&O ShutUp10 is an excellent free piece of software that provides many options to reduce the amount of data that is harvested by Microsoft. I strongly recommend using it and reading the description of each item that can be enabled or disabled to stop a lot of unwanted data-harvesting. Quoted from the developer's website: O&O ShutUp10: https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 Setting up a custom firewall to block Microsoft telemetry servers Download and install this custom hosts file, and this custom PeerBlock Microsoft IP list which is regularly updated from information obtained via Wireshark: https://encrypt-the-planet.com/windows-10-anti-spy-host-file/ Review this thorough guide (a website account is needed to view it): https://encrypt-the-planet.com/completely-disable-windows-10-telemetry/ Spybot Anti-Beacon Another good tool for blocking unwanted communication between a PC and Microsoft. It adds a lot of IPs to the Windows hosts file Spybot Anti-Beacon: https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/ Debloat Windows 10 Use the free Debloat Windows 10 script to do as it says in its description: Debloat Windows 10: https://github.com/W4RH4WK/Debloat-Windows-10/blob/master/scripts/block-telemetry.ps1 Manually block Microsoft data-collection servers in your Windows hosts file There have been suggestions that Windows 10 ignores Microsoft servers in the hosts file, but Spybot Anti-Beacon adds a bunch of Microsoft servers to it and so maybe they know something different. The Windows hosts file is located at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. To open it, right-click and select "Open with", then choose Notepad and press OK. Then save the file when you're done editing it and then close it. You can try adding these Microsoft data-collection servers to your Windows hosts file: Disconnect Microsoft telemetry server connections From: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/privacy/configure-windows-diagnostic-data-in-your-organization (US page) And: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/privacy/configure-windows-diagnostic-data-in-your-organization (UK page) More details on Windows 10 endpoints and ways to disconnect them: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/privacy/manage-windows-endpoints My Digital Life's excellent repository on Windows 10 telemetry and its removal that contains sections on: Delete Telemetry Services Delete Remnants of Diagtrack and Cortana Task Scheduler Block IP Re-Routing Hosts File Block Packages Uninstall Lists PEERBLOCK for Blocking Telemetry Windows 10 IP Range Block List Apps Online Uninstall Link: [REPO] Windows 10 TELEMETRY REPOSITORY Disable Windows 10 Telemetry Service Disclaimer: This suggestion has been reported to be deprecated and so likely has no effect on the amount of telemetry Windows 10 collects It was previously suggested that some Windows 10 telemetry and data collection could be disabled by doing the following: Go to Services and Applications -> Services in the left pane. In the services list, disable the following service: Connected User Experiences and Telemetry service (called "Diagnostics Tracking Service" in Windows 10 version 1151 and earlier) dmwappushsvc Again, doing this likely has no effect on the level of telemetry that is collected. For Windows 7 and 8 The surest way to run Windows 7 telemetry-free is to install Windows 7 from an early-to-mid 2015 ISO and then permanently disable Windows Update. I have a June 2015 ISO of Windows 7 available for download in this post: Block Microsoft data-collection servers in your Windows hosts file For this, follow the same instructions mentioned in the Windows 10 section of this guide. Windows 7 / 8(.1): Guidance on avoiding telemetry-containing updates including a list of security-only updates with download links for each (updated February 2019): https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/2000003-ongoing-list-of-group-b-monthly-updates-for-win7-and-8-1/ Windows 7 / 8(.1): A thorough guide to identifying telemetry updates, removing the Windows telemetry service, and blocking Microsoft's telemetry servers https://www.ghacks.net/2017/02/11/blocking-telemetry-in-windows-7-and-8-1/ Aegis script: Disables, uninstalls, and blocks a bunch of Windows 7 / 8 telemetry & data-collection updates Since around mid-2015 (and possibly a bit earlier), Microsoft has been back-adding telemetry harvesting into Windows 7 and 8(.1) through the updates that are installed by Windows Update. These updates are not required, and can be declined from installing and also will not be downloaded and installed if Windows Update is disabled. But, if a person has automatic updates enabled these updates will be automatically installed. If a person doesn't want these to be installed, they can be quickly uninstalled and blocked from being re-downloaded and installed by running a script that knows which updates to permanently block from being searched-for by Windows Update, and from being downloaded and installed. Aegis Script is one such script, though it was last updated May 18, 2016. The Aegis script will also remove and block any prompts in Windows 7 and 8 about downloading and installing Windows 10. Directions: Download, unzip, disable anti-virus, right click on aegis.cmd, click "run as administrator", follow on-screen instructions. Note: If unable to uninstall some kb's this post may help. Internet Explorer: Some updates which may contain critical security patches for ie, as well as automated delivery of ie and related updates, will be blocked. Due to the obvious security risk posed by running an unpatched browser we strongly advise to uninstall ie. If you plan to continue to use ie you should probably not run this script - or manually patch and do so at your own risk. It has been thoroughly tested on my own systems and scanned with VirusTotal, and to the best of my knowledge it does not contain any harmful or malicious elements. I do appreciate any feedback and I will give you credit if I use your ideas. This script is the product of a collaborative effort and does not belong to any one person. Windows Update: This script will not block Windows Update however it will change your Windows Update settings to 'check/notify but do not download/install'. If you have problems getting Windows Update to work properly after running the script you may need to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or the System Update Readiness Tool. If you have recently installed updates and have not yet rebooted you should reboot before running the script. If you are on a fresh install you may want to install all updates before running Aegis for the first time, otherwise it may take a long time to update. 9. Hi everyone, I need some help here. I've been using a Lenovo laptop for almost three years now and I'm currently studying mechanics and aerodynamics to become an engineer in France. However I have a huge issue, I started taking notes in class using my laptop and as it's a gaming laptop, battery life isn't its main feature. Therefore I enabled the integrated graphics (Intel) in it to gain some autonomy when using it on battery. But I often play videogames and therefore I plug in my laptop and want to use the dedicated graphics of my laptop (Nvidia GTX 1660Ti). Here's my issue, I can't see any settings to fully switch from only dedicated graphics when plugged in to only integrated ones when on battery and backwards automatically. Has someone already figured it out and/or cooked a solution/script to automatize this toggle switch? Thanks in advance for your answers.
  10. My brother recently upgraded to a GTX 1070, and we are trying to run firestrike, but it's telling us to disable G-sync. Only problem, is there's no option for G-sync in the Nvidia control panel, and my brother doesn't have a G-sync monitor.
  11. I've built a cute little computer to use as a home server/NAS, specs at the bottom of my sig (ignore the disclaimer about it not working, I fixed it). I've been planning to run Windows 10 on it for various reasons, however it needs to be an always-on machine and I can't have Windows randomly deciding to restart it. What's the best way to go about disabling this stuff? I don't care about most of Windows 10's BS in this case, but I just absolutely need the thing never to turn off/restart on its own. Hope that's possible because using Windows 7 would be considerably less convenient. Thanks.
  12. Summary: I want to disable ANY AND ALL Chromecast functionality from my rooted Android 6.0.1 Nexus 5 It bothers me in ways I can't quite explain how the Chromecast button pops up everywhere I'm watching videos. I have casted Youtube videos late at night one too many times and woken up the entire house, the popups are everywhere, on anything from animated GIFs to flash advertisements to videos being played locally. The icon itself is annoying on top of what it does. To take it a step further, it even pops up without being connected to WiFi now. I get that Chromecasts are supposed to be idiotproof and easy to use, but it's genuinely frustrating to have to deal with its constant presence and not having an option to turn it off somehow. I understand that some apps have this button built in (right..?) and can't be removed. All I'm asking for is some way in which I can eliminate my phone's ability to tell the Chromecast to cast anything or even stop all communication with it. I know I haven't made the strongest case for not wanting it on my screen, but it bothers me and I would appreciate it going away. Also, I have privacy concerns. Let's not pretend everything we do on our phones is something we'd want the rest of the family to see... LMGTFY HAHAHAHA I have attempted to look for a solution at least 10 times at different occasions in the last 1-2 years. I still haven't found anything. Googling is easier than posting on a forum - of course I've tried Googling before typing out this post. (Also lmgtfy is considered spam on these forums so don't even do it ironically). Remove the Chromecasts... My family still uses them. I do not, never have, and literally cannot imagine any possible future in which I would. Just deal with it, it's a tiny icon in the corner of your screen. Yes it's tiny, yes it's in the corner. Yet it still bothers me. Just disconnect your phone from WiFI. The icon is still there, and it will still bring up options to cast to nearby devices. Change your Chromecasts to different bands form your phone? 5 ghz Chromecasts and 2.4 ghz phone? No matter what configuration of 5ghz and 2.4ghz either the Chromecasts or my phone is running, they somehow detect each other and the options for all 3 of them are still there. Uninstall Chromecast with Rom Toolbox. I also saw this solution on some forum somewhere. Even with Rom Toolbox Pro, I can't figure out what to uninstall to get it off my phone once and for all. Make a new network for your phone. Um... I assume this means a new device and such exclusively for my use. That's out of the budget range frankly. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys you have always been helpful in the past.
  13. I have a r9 280x toxic by sapphire and my fan just started being floppy and making noise. It is pretty much done. I have a spare fan to use and I want to disable the problematic fan. Can I just put something on the way so it won't move at all or is this going to create a problem in the long run by delivering power to it? Is there any other way, other than unplugging the cord? Can I cut it?
  14. I have installed comodo antivirus and secure dns is blocking perfectly safe websites that I have been using for years, I have the latest version of comodo and widows 10. My browser is Microsoft Edge. Please can someone tell me how to disable comodo secure DNS. Thanks
  15. Hi. How you permanently disable /uninstall microsoft edge? I prefer to use some apps for certain files and either microsoft edge and action keep on changing default apps.
  16. Running a 6800k on an Asus X99 Strix with 2 GTX980s and a Samsung 960 Evo and a Samsung 840 Evo. I installed the 960 Evo today with only a single graphics card in because the second card covers up the m.2 port. Got windows running fine and everything. Then when it came time to put the second card and the 840 Evo back in I booted up and only one of my USB ports was working in windows. They all worked fine in BIOS. I can see that right after the post screen within a second of the windows loading screen appearing that the LEDs in my mouse turn off so it's definitely something in windows doing it. However I can get to device manager with just my keyboard in the one working USB port and see that it's recognising all the USB ports on the motherboard. I thought I might have run out of bandwidth but the 6800k has 28 PCIe lanes, I'm using x16 (1st 980) x8 (2nd 980) x4 (960 Evo) so I'm fine for PCIe bandwidth. I've tried different SATA ports for the 840 in case a different SATA controller was trying to use bandwidth that wasn't there. I've looked through my motherboard's manual and haven't seen anything about weird combinations of ports not working when maxing PCIe bandwidth, no odd POST code either. I've tried taking the second card and 840 Evo out but still the same problem. This leads me to think it's an obscure windows setting but I'm stumped. Edit: it also doesn't recognise my second 980, device manager reports it as a "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" and the nvidia control panel doesn't see it.
  17. Hey guys, I've been using Spotify on my phone for a while now and I always wanted to know how to disable the album covers on my lock screen. Of course there is an Xposed module for this but installing xposed and another xposed module just for getting my background back seems to be a bit too complicated for me ^^ So I googled a bit and found a solution in the Spotify forums. There is a thread that asks for an option in Spotify to disable/enable this feature, but spotify developers will only read it if it gets atleast 50 votes. So if you are a Spotify user please click on the link and give it a vote Here is the link to the Thread : https://community.spotify.com/t5/Live-Ideas/Android-Music-Disable-Album-Art-on-Lock-Screen-Option/idi-p/1411721 Thanks in advance for your help, I hope I am in the right section here and that it's allowed to ask you for help. Have a nice day and sorry for my bad english
  18. Greetings. The LTT Forum notification sounds aren't to my liking, and they appear to get louder the more notifications I have or the more replies have been posted, which can be quite jarring. Is there any way to mute notification sounds entirely? I'd appreciate any help with this. Regards, Aereldor.
  19. Hey guys, whenever play BF1 on my Razer Blade 14, the CPU goes to very high temperatures (98 C), causing stutters in-game. This does not happen when I disable intel turbo boost as temperatures stay around 90 C. I used the power management method to disable it by setting "Maximum Processor State" to 99%, however recently this method has stopped working. I don't know if it is caused by a windows update but changing the "Maximum Processor State" does not seem to work until 64%. I found this software called Rightmark PPM, which allowed me to edit an option called "Boost", which helped me disable it, but whenever I unplug my computer from power, it does a BSOD. Is there anyway to fix the Windows Power Management thingy or disable turbo boost. (There's no BIOS option) Oh and it has an Intel i7-4720HQ and a GTX 970M. Yeah the old model...
  20. I ran into so many issues with my build recently that I decided to install a fresh Windows 10 OS. Afterwards however I now have to boot using Windows Boot Manager. I've always been able to boot directly from the primary drive before yet now I'm stuck with the boot manager. It slows my boot time down to 18.2 seconds. I want to know why it added the boot manager this time around and how I can get rid of it. I've set the boot manager timeout to 0 using command prompt which then resulted in only showing me the boot manager as a boot option within my bios. Again I just want to boot directly from my m.2 drive and completely remove the boot manager. Thanks in advance for any help.
  21. So I'm guessing optical drives can be seen as peripherals right? Didn't think it fit better anywhere else. Anyway: disclaimer: I'm dutch so sorry for grammar errors. I recently built a new pc, and basically the only thing I migrated is my optical drive. "What? An optical drive?" you might say, but for me, it's something I want to keep. Reason 1: it's the Asus BW-12B1LT and it looks pretty great on the front of the case. Reason 2: I burn audio cd's for my car radio once or twice a year. (my2000, only cd possible). Anyway: the problem is, this built is pretty silenced based. My case and GPU fans only spin up after a certain temperature and still then they're pretty silent. Basically the whole built is inaudible unless you press your ear up against it. However, the optical drive annoys me. On every startup, it spins up to do some checks. I think all optical drives do this. I never noticed it in the previous built, which has more fans. But now on the totally silence PC it annoys me. I already did this: -Disabled the SATA port in bios. Hides it from windows, still spins up, button still works. What I would love to achieve is: disable the device in software to achieve no spin ups at all, and no reaction to the hardware button, until I re enable it. That's probably pretty hard to cut the power without, you know, cutting the power. So what I would also be okay with is just no spin ups while the button still works. However I really don't feel like opening up the case twice a year to disconnect the cables. Shouldn't disabling the sata port in bios at least stop the spin ups? I don't understand why it wouldn't, then what's the point of that option? PS the motherboard is the Asus Maximus XI hero (wifi). I hope someone knows, I did read something only about setting the IRQ value to 0 and it would stop it, but can't find that in the bios. Thanks!
  22. I bought an Asus laptop which came with a Ryzen 5 2500U and a GTX1050 with 8GB RAM, I want to know if I can disable de Vega 8 integrated graphics in the Ryzen CPU since it does nothing but use RAM. Also, I would like to know if it could be done the other way, can I disable the GTX 1050? I would like to do it because it would improve battery life when I'm doing lite work on the go as the Vega GPU is enough for that and I don't need the RAM. If not, I would like to know how to disable the Vega 8 and get the 2GB out of 8GB of RAM it is using free. I won't be using 2 GPU's at once so I want to know if I can disable either of them.
  23. I have an R3 2200G which has integrated graphics. I'm using a PCIE graphics card so thought it might be best to disable the iGPU in the bios. Especially since I have an exclamation mark on my iGPU driver in device manager. My bios has the setting "Integrated Graphics" which is set to "Force". The description reads "Enable Integrate Graphics Controller". Is it a good idea to go ahead and set it to "Disabled"? Thanks in advance.
  24. So, since a few weeks, every time I start my pc, it takes a looonnng time to boot because that IBA thing launches and i dont know how to disable it ... I have a Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Pro as mobo, 1 240Gb NVME SSD Force 510 from Corsair and 1Tb WD Blue ...
