Summary "Managed Wifi" has been a SIM and eSIM feature for a few years now on iPhones and iPads, but no cell carrier was as "customer friendly" as Comcast Xfinity, who has started auto-enabling and auto-re-enabling their wifi networks when you turn off "auto join." This becomes a problem if your neighbor's wifi is just close enough to get 1 bar, so your phone drops off 4G/5G and your internet speed basically dies. Quotes My thoughts Comcast Xfinity will keep doing this until enough of their customers know this is going on, and rake them over the coals. This was originally meant to be used in very exceptional cases like at a major sporting event where the cell network collapses because of the density of cell phones. Sources https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35447486, see more details in this comment https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35448537 It's designed to be able to be turned off, Comcast Xfinity has hacked around this though: https://9to5mac.com/2023/04/05/turn-off-iphone-wifi-auto-join-public-networks/

Hi All, So earlier today, I received an e-mail from Comcast stating my internet speed was being increased from 300 to 400 Mbps. I restarted my router/modem combo and tested the speed on my laptop; it was around 280Mbps. I then tested it on my phone; it was 370 Mbps, which is correct. I had thought that maybe my account didn't update or something, but this proves that it did. I can't figure out why I'm not getting the upgraded speed on my computer. My router is a TP-Link Archer CR700. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 7586 which has an Intel Wireless AC 9560, which according to Intel's website, has a max speed of 1.73 Gbps. I wouldn't think this network card would be a bottleneck since I'm nowhere near the max speed. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S21 (not plus or Ultra). What I've already tried: -Restarted computer -Disabled then re-enabled network card -Ran ipconfig /renew & ipconfig /flushdns commands I'd greatly appreciate any help you can provide.

So I've been getting into a small torrenting hobby, wont say what I'm just saying ive been torrenting on an old 2010 hp all in one my grandmother gave me and now that is my jellyfin server and it works great... until Comcast started throttling my speeds at a time that seems much more than coincidental. We pay for 900mbps internet, on a normal day we get 300-500, yesterday i got 100, today i have 200, thats not the problem, usually my torrents are blazing fast, not today. They are a solid 7kibps according to qbittorrent and thats average. So today I called comcast and the conversation was an utter waste of time, so i first call them then they restart my router and say i cant talk to an agent until they do so. So that takes 10 minutes then i call back, the woman on the phone says "im sending a signal to the router" then i do a speed test each time she did it about 5-10 times, nothing. Then she thinks its the modem, we got the modem 6 months ago with our speed bump and i tell her that yet she is convinced and wont listen to me. She says she wants to send a tech to my house and that costs 70 bucks if there is no problem or if the problem is somehow my fault, she also thinks its the wiring too. Then she says the other option is to get it replaced at an xfinity store which for me is 45 min away. I still cant torrent and im not getting close to what i pay for and i have no idea what to do as they wont fix their shit.

Hello everybody! I want to change my ip address, but I am having a little bit of a difficult time doing this. For my internet setup, I have xfinity internet, and xfinity router, as well as for my computer I use a usb wifi adapter. I have tried the obvious restarting my router, but that didn't work. Thank you for helping!

I want to replace Comcast's garbage cable modem. I have no idea which one to get. So many different opinions, and I trust LTTC the most... so please help! I'm using an Asus AC87U for a router, how does everyone feel about that? Should I upgrade or is it okay for a 950 sq/ft apartment. THANKS as always! Provider: Comcast US/DS: 105/25

I switched to business class internet i was getting with blaster package like 230 down and 12 up and im getting 180 down and 11-12 up but im suppose to be getting 20 up. plugged the modem directly into the computer and i get the 20 up. So I'm living in an apartment for the summer, and my roommate had Comcast set up internet here. I didn't bring my router or modem, and he doesn't have either, so we have Comcast's Arris wireless modem. We have 100 Mbps, but the internet is super spotty, and some websites seem to have a lot more trouble than others loading. Speed tests report around 25 down, 5 up. I decided, since I know a little about networking to poke around in the router settings. I logged into the router, but then, the SSID was wrong. After clicking around, it prompted for the password again, and the SSID changed. From what I can tell, based on the little experience I have, there are multiple routers in this building, all connected with MoCA, and all the Gateway IPs are the same. Is this normal? Could this be causing the slow down? Should I try to connect to just my modem and turn off MoCA? Should I call Comcast?

Ever since i got a new isp and router, my link speed will not exceed 100mbps. so far i installed new drivers and have called intel whos Ethernet adapter i am using, they promptly said "its not us it must be Comcast". so i called Comcast..."its not us, must be net gear" called net gear. "its not us it must be intel" full circle, i call intel back another time and they tell me its asus and something could be wrong with my motherboard or adapter. i just received a new intel gigabit adapter AND Ethernet cable and it still will not exceed 100mbps. (i am supposed to be getting 200 down btw) anyway i have spend 50$ and literally hours of time and i have reached another dead end any suggestions on what to do next?

I've had a few issues with my WiFi lately that've been driving me crazy, to the point of resetting my PC with no luck. When I connect to the wifi, I can load web pages fine, stream video, download things etc. all with no issue. But the internet access icon in my taskbar shows zero bars and a red x. In addition, I have crazy rubberbanding issues in pretty much any multiplayer game. In the same games at the same time, I have a very normal ping, around 40-50 ms and none of the other computers/consoles in the house have this issue. I replaced the modem, reseated my TP-Link N900 card, reinstalled drivers, and now I reset my PC with no luck. Any ideas? I'm also using comcast Xfinity so I understand there might not be a good fix

Around a month ago my internet started randomly dropping out. I figured out that my Comcast-provided modem was randomly kicking itself in and out of "bridge mode" in which it acts as just a modem and doesn't use its built in router. I called in, they said this is a common issue that lots of units have (wtf?) and replaced it. Unsurprisingly the new one only took a couple weeks to start doing the same thing as of yesterday. It's completely random when it goes down and for how long. So I've decided I'm done with Comcast's shitty hardware and I'm just going to get my own modem. However I'm really not good at networking stuff in general and I've never set up a modem, so it scares me a little. So: What should I be looking for in a modem, and how much should I spend? Is there anything special I'll have to do on the ISP side to get it running, or do I just screw in the connection from outside and expect it to work? Anything else I should know setting up a modem, and good proper guides for doing so?

So I up graded to Comcast gigabit internet for 70$ a month. I own my router which is capable of 10gig speeds and I use wired cat6 cables. My computer is all custom but I don't want to list all the parts but it's overkill and has a 10gig nic. When I test my speeds with Googles built in speed I get 50 down and 5 up. On the speed test site that everybody knows (speedtest.net) I get 230 to 250 up and 10 to 12 down. Same on the Comcast speed test too. Does Comcast need to come out and install optic cable or something. I'm really upset with Comcast (even though I always am cause they are the only company in my area and they have poor business practices towards the customer and poor data tracking and over charging customers and throttling speeds regularly.) I need the upload speed and down speed for large texture files for animations and 4k raw video I edit and upload. How do I get my full speed I'm paying for and should they charge me less cause they can't deliver the speed I need.

The Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) is the cable industry's push for increasing data carriage capabilities. Version 3.1 (DOCSIS 3.1) aims to push this further as a cost effective way in to the Gigabit stream, promising to deliver 10 Gbps downstream and 1Gpbs upstream. Several providers have already started using the said technology and deployed it to consumers. Comcast is giving quite the push whilst leading the pack along with other ISPs delivering D3.1 services. ISP, Mediacom (Mediacom Communications Corp) claims the title as being the first D3.1 network albeit not pushing the technology to all areas due to cable modem's availability (Source: Here) Should you switch to Gigabit Internet? Unless you're streaming multiple 4K videos simultaneously...Well, there are still some factors to look at.

Just got an email today with Comcast updating their terms of service. There are many questionable items listed. Source: https://www.xfinity.com/Corporate/Customers/Policies/additionalterms.html?rid=3820064855&mid=20170726_AdHoc_CM_RSA From Section 1: (Don't know why the have it listed in all caps) I do not know why they would need access into your computers or other devices, and for some reason to "fix" your service they see fit to void the warranty of a device, they do not have to pay the penalty, you do. This is just outrageous to put some of this in a ToS for internet. "Sir, I need to open your TV to make sure it is compatible with our service." Section 2 seems to allow Comcast (and in turn the TV agency's they own) to use any content you "publish, transmit, or distribute" over their network without having to pay for it. We keep the rights, but are not able to stop them from using it.

Okay a lot has happened but I'll try to remember everything and go through in chronological order: Since maybe a week and half to two weeks ago, my house's internet connection has been ATROCIOUS. Cutting in and out whenever it pleases, and slower than usual while it is up. Finally got time to call Comcast support today, and after walking me through the basic "is everything plugged in, are you a moron, let's restart your modem" phase, the support agent finally determined that disabling bridge mode between their Xfinity router/modem combo box extravaganza and my Netgear Router would fix it. She said that my router was probably just 'going bad' and I should replace it, but at least I can use the built in one in the modem for now. Here's where it gets strange. When we got off the phone, I noticed that the lights on the modem for each wifi band (which were normally on when it was 'bridged' and using the other router) were off. But yet the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks were both still up. It worked fine for a few hours though, so I figured whatever she did had actually fixed the issue. But after that brief window of non-garbage internet, it went right back cutting out all the time. So, unconvinced that she had actually disabled my router (it was still plugged into the modem and on) I unplugged it and rebooted everything. Well, the integrated wifi on the Xfinity box is giving me the same issue, (Connected, no internet) just as it's been when it cut out before. Except I haven't seen it cut back in yet, and I don't think this is on Comcast because I plugged my laptop into the ethernet port on the modem (which is now also the router) and it's working perfectly; posting this on it right now. So the next logical step would be to log into the Xfinity box's UI via the local IP and see if I can figure out what's wrong, right? Problem is, when I type in the default gateway into the address bar, it just hangs there then times out. Another thing that's weird is that since swapping over to the Xfinity box, the internal IP's (I think) are extensions of what used to be my PUBLIC IP, and now my public IP is some crazy long MAC Address lookin' thing with colons and letters and stuff (Edit: I think it's IPV6?) So I have absolutely positively no idea what to do, and I really, really don't want to deal with Comcast support again. Please advise.

Right now I am paying for 100 MBPS download and managed to strike a deal with Comcast on the phone while moving to our new place. While moving I called Comcast to move the service from my old place to the new one, they offered twice the speed (200 MBPS) for the same price I was paying (for 100 MBPS). I happily thanked and accepted that offer. Now that I'm here and I am experiencing the new 'speed', I am heavily disappointed. I get anywhere from 0.20 to 80 MBPS using ethernet using speedtest.net (I cannot tell why, I have not found a pattern or reason) My phone gets ~15-30 MBPS but I haven't toyed too much with it and it is on the 2.4 GHz wireless network, not the 5 GHz (we have a dual band router). First, to dip as low as 0.20 MBPS is shameful when I am supposed to get 200 MBPS. Second, 80 MBPS (max download speed I ever got on a speed test at my new place) isn't even half of what I am supposed to be getting! Here is how I set up my internet, I live a condo and there are little female coaxial ports in the walls. I got a coaxial cable from Best Buy and plugged that into my modem, used the included ethernet wire to plug in my router to the modem then used another Best Buy ethernet cable from my router to my computer a few feet away. Afterward, I just called Comcast to give us the internet and they did. Have not called them since.

Here we go again, more BS from the big ISP's, working with elected, alleged "representatives" of a local government, to stall or outright prevent any and all competition. This time in Nashville Tennessee. Considering how terrible both companies are at what they do, I see absolutely no reason to involve them. Both have extremely long and sordid histories of offering terrible service, overcharging customers, lying about overcharging customers, actively donating to any "representative" willing to help allow them to not have to compete, etc. They deserve no voice in this matter, imho. So, let me guess this straight. She voted against OTMR the first time around,, this could stall Google Fiber being rolled out, and now she says she would support OTMR? This woman needs to not be in office. She either has no idea what is actually going one (she doesn't know who she's talking to. Comcast and AT&T are scum, we all know this), or they're in her pocket. (my opinion, but still likely considering the history of corporations paying politicians to lie to get what the companies want. They call it "lobbying", sane people call it bribery). So basically, her idea amounts to making things slightly faster, and giving the companies a slap on the wrist for misbehaving, and doing what we ALL know they will do. Source: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/09/att-and-comcast-helped-elected-official-write-plan-to-stall-google-fiber/ There is more to read here, but do any of us really doubt that Comcast and AT&T have anyone's interests in mind but their own? The only arguments against OTMR, are completely asinine. Mainly consisting of Comcast and AT&T saying they need to "ensure the quality of Google's work", as if either of those companies are in ANY position to ensure the quality of anyone's work. As for outages? I don't think it would matter much, I would be willing to bet that Comcast and AT&T will lose most of their customers once they realize a better ISP is in town offering a better service at a better price. Hell my workplace uses Comcast, and it gets disrupted regularly. Granted we have a ridiculous amount of traffic (installing ChromeOS on several thousand Chromebooks at once)

Hey everyone, I seem to have run into an issue with my network but only with my computer. My pc is plugged directly into my Xfinity Arris modem using a Cat 6 ethernet cable. I have my Xbox One and TV also plugged into the modem but I have not noticed any issues with them network wise. First my PC specs: intel core i7 2700k OC 4.4 Corsair H100i Cooler Asus Sabertooth z77 Corsair (4x4GB)16 GB RAM 1600mhz? XFX Radeon 295x2 Mushkin Chronos 120 GB SSD WD 3 TB green HD EVGA G2 1000w PSU Windows 10 version: (after update) Version: 1903 Build: 18936.1000 A few weeks ago my network on my PC seemed to be bogged down even at start up. webpages wouldn't load, sign in verifications would time out. Browsing the steam store was impossible I get every different error page that exists. Usually if there is an issue with the network its due to comcasts shitty modem. I went to them and replaced it which didn't help. I am still not ruling it out though because it took me an hour to get it to cooperate with me and it was "new". Like I said before I have no issues with my xbox, PS4, or my smart tv, all are plugged in with ethernet cables while my ps4 is on wifi. I have a few devices on wifi but I have no issues with it at all. Now I tried using all my different ethernet cables with my PC same issues. I decided to run a speedtest downloaded the speedtest.net app on the windows store. I found what seems to be the problem using this my download speed is 118mbps but my upload speed is an atrocious 0.02mbps. Running the speedtest on my xbox I get the same download speed but upload is between 4 and 5mbps still atrocious but that's normal for comcast. I found a wifi usb lying around and tried to use that and it does work slightly better with upload speed I get around 2 mbps but the download speed is only 50mbps and the modem is right next to it. I tried reinstalling my network drivers, updating windows, I went to my moms house and tested it there same issues, windows troubleshooting says nothing, intels update tool says the ethernet port is working and theres no issues, device manager has no cautions, ran Malwarebytes for viruses and windows defender, used CCleaner to clean the registry and everything else. Seems I have done everything besides reinstall a clean windows or get a new motherboard which both of those I would like to avoid at the moment. So I am seeking advice for this frustrating issue. Networking is not my thing and I hate diagnosing these problems. Thanks everyone

Hi, I've been doing a lot of large downloads and uploads recently on my home network. And these appear slow, so I will run a speed test and they magically get the speeds I pay for while the speed test occurs. So I recently began to use my PIA vpn more often and woah... I'm getting the speeds I pay for?!? How crazy, right? Has anyone else had this problem with Comcast or any ISP for that matter. I know they have gotten wise and can detect when a speed test occurs. But it's beyond ridiculous - it brings my speed from many Mbps to a few Kbps. FYI - I generally use a wired connection.

ARRIS SURFboard SBG6400 is my modem and comcast is my provider for service. I have my cable/wifi modem on a light switch so i can turn it off when not used. in the last few months usage has been very high and i also went over once. so i tested it and even when not connected to my computer and left on for 9 hours i racked up 38GB even after i have changed all the wifi log in and modem log in and pass words, so what gives? the next step was i called comcast, with no help. do i get a new box or do i use theirs and get screwed 10 bucks a month. or what can you guys come up with. i do live in a big apartment building if that helps. . guest network is disabled i only has 15mbps so even if i connected and they were data harvesting me it be pretty hard to rack 38gb in the few mins i was on or even if i was on for an hour

Just moved and I now have the opportunity to get 1000mbps internet (allegedly) through Comcast, the other option is 25mbps through Verizon so were going with comcast. I don't want to rent a router from them and so I need a router or just a WAP (I do have a 2600 I could use) what do you guys recommend?

So, to start off with I have Comcast and live in the central US. I've had this same problem for a while now over 2 separate modems that I have gotten from Comcast. My wired connection to my PC can get super unstable at times, going from 250 down and 12 up to 2 down and 0.1 up. But at the same exact time both the 5ghz and 2.4 ghz can be perfectly stable. The 5ghz will be a very stable 150 down and 10 up and the 2.4ghz would be a stable 30 down and 8 up. I really just don't understand how one can be stable and fast at the same exact time as the other one sometimes failing to even get 0.2 down. The modem that I have from comcast is maybe a month old at this point and I have replaced all the ethernet cabling between it and my desktop. And the speeds are just as crappy when i plug my laptop in as well. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated!

Sources: ZDNet BuzzFeed TL;DR: Vulnerabilities in the Comcast user verification and user signup systems have allowed hackers to get the Address of a customer and the last four of their SSN. Media: Quotes/Excerpts: My Thoughts: Comcast has failed some of the basics of Security. Rate limiting should be enabled on any sort of input form and you should never assume an not yet authorized device is on a network let alone ask it to pick from a list of choices.

Hey guys, I am going to be a new Comcast customer in a few weeks (no choice...only provider in the area). I have had some experience in the past with their crappy modem/router combos and want to also avoid paying their monthly leasing fee. Can anyone recommend a good modem and router? Is it better to get them separate or to get a combo unit myself? I'm willing to get separate if it's cheaper or better in general. Location: 2 bedroom apartment (1000 SQ feet) in a complex so likely a lot of other wifi signals running interference. I'll make sure to switch my router to a less congested channel but want something with good strength to not have any dead spots. What I do: game online, wife streams simultaneously (Netflix, youtube, etc), and have probably 5-6 connected devices at one time. Help?

Before I get started on this thread, let me explain that THIS IS NOT A HOW TO GUIDE! Although I will not stop you from attempting this, who knows if this will work for other people. About three years ago I was sitting in my apartment and my parents explained to me that they were going over seas to Iraq to visit family and they told me that I had to live with my sisters for about a month or two. Me being very uspet because I hate all of my sisters and being forced to live with them was not ideal I painfully explained that I didn't want to live with them and I was totally old enough to live on my own or with a single sister at the apartment, they didn't agree, damn. But before we left to the hell hole my mom told me to call Comcast and tell them that I had to say that we won't be living here for the next few months and we told them to temporarily disconnect our internet so we won't get billed because no one is going to use the internet and it'll be a waste of money. So I called them and I said "In around two weeks can you disconnect the internet no one is going to be at this residence." Comcast agreed and told me that they were going to do that. Good, I'll be on my way. FOUR MONTHS LATER AND ALMOST WANTING TO DIE My sisters and I thought it would be nice to go back to the apartment to go clean it up a bit before my parents came home a week later. We head inside and clean or what ever, until something caught my eye. I looked at the modem lights and they were EXACTLY the same. "Weird." I thought "Didn't we disconnect our internet?" My sisters agreed that I did because they were near me at the time making sure I didn't screw anything up. I then went down stairs near the entrance of the building and checked the mail to see the mountain of mail we've received. Not a single bill. "Did Comcast not disconnect our internet and just decided to not bill us because it'll be easier?" .... Maybe? I don't know. The reason why I decided to share with this with you guys now is that they finally cracked down on us not getting billed. Although they didn't say so they just said that they just disconnected it and that was that. I didn't want to share this information because I don't know if the FBI was going to crack down on me or something. I'm pretty upset now that I have to start paying again, In total I saved $2160. Just thought I'd share! (Also if you end up trying this please let me know the results, maybe we can start a trend here.)
