The creator of SponsorBlock has recently released a new extension which attempts to remove clickbait. LTT made a video 6 years ago talking about the change to "cancerous thumbnails". I would love the communities opinion and from LLT on what this extension is attempting to do. (How it works: Titles are user submitted and thumbnails picked by users from a frame in the video)

Hey! So... I was wondering if I'm the only one who is this annoyed by the new thumbnails and video titles. I love the channel's content in its majority, but Linus following this trend makes me want to pull my hair out. It really drives me crazy. Does anyone have a suggestion regarding how to stop this? Linus himself said in the WAN show he didn't like it, but it gave him more views, so he didn't have a choice. Are we out of options here? I appreciate any help.

PCI-SIC accelerates the creation of PCIe 5.0 Source: https://www.overclock3d.net/news/misc_hardware/pci-sic_accelerates_the_creation_of_pcie_5_0/1 PCIe 5.0 will enable users to get more bandwidth out of fewer PCIe lanes and enable the creation of faster PCIe devices, allowing 400Gb/s Ethernet solutions to be created for servers or to reduce the PCIe requirements of modern M.2, U.2 or PCIe storage devices. So with GPUs not even saturating the bandwidth of a current 3.0 x16 slot, I can only wonder what this will do to SSDs... MOAR POWER!!!!111!!!!!

SoftBank Corporation has invested $4 BILLION into NVIDIA. -- Source Link has AUTOPLAY VIDEO/AUDIO. Freakin' Bloomberg. Source: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-24/softbank-said-to-take-4-billion-stake-in-u-s-chipmaker-nvidia Parent company of LinusMediaGroup[1] NVIDIA, had an injection of funds recently. BOW TO YOUR NVIDIA OVERLORD MASTERS! SoftBank intends to become the biggest investor in tech over the next 10 years focusing on emerging trends to include AI. Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, pledged to create 50,000 jobs through investing in startups and new companies. This would explain why my NVIDIA stock is doing so much better all of the sudden. The company has already made several investments into tech companies in China and in the USA. With this bold move by SoftBank, what will #TeamRed do? 1. As one wise Tywin Lannister once said, everyone who says 'I am the king' is no true king', his wisdom didnt end there and his argument is universal. What i mean by that is, that every youtube Channel who uses 'no clickbait' in their video titles clearly has a problem with Using to much clickbait-ish thumbnails and titles. And sadly this is in my opinion reflected by the content quality over the last 6 Months. More flashy Video titles and dank stuff for less practical reviews. Its find for me if ltt makes their videos in a funny Mood and putting some memes to it, just pair it with useable product reviews for us, the subscribers. In my opinion, the only reason currently for a techie to start watching ltt is to learn about this forum and community because they are just sick af. So please ltt Put some more good and classy product reviews into Your uploading schedule and Not Just videos that usw Up all the power Your editing machines with fancy effects Just for the sake of "because we can".

Hey, so I am making a pc for my friend and I need your advice. I already have the cpu which is an Intel core I5 6600. He isn't overclocking so stock fan will be adequit. It's a mini itx build because he got $1200 AUD and wants a good gpu. I'm gonna go give you guys a list of what I've made and please contradict me or help me to give him a great pc for the price. Also, NO AMD products AT ALL. This will be intel and Nvidia. (sorry AMD fanboys). Cool. ($1200 is basically the absolute top of his budget so if it could be lower and still good please like help me and try) THX. https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/8vzYm8

Welcome to my first tutorial! First of all I do not mean to offend anyone at LTT, it's just a joke (every time Linus does DIY it makes me cringe as an engineer student though). That being said, this tutorial is intended to make it as easy as possible for anyone to build a set of LED lights with a similar feature set as the NZXT hue+. This means that every single LED on your strip can be individually controlled. This opens an immense amount of customization options, all within your grasp with the use of a simple app I coded. Oh and by the way the total materials cost is around $25 US. Before we start a few notes and the obligatory disclaimer: This post is meant to serve as a guide, and I am in no way shape or form responsible for any damage that you may cause to your hardware or yourself. That being said, use common sense and you will be fine. Lastly, I must inform you that the app is NOT color accurate due to the nature of LED lighting, and the patterns represented in the app are there to give you an idea of what they will look like in the LEDs: the two are not in sync. Here is what you will need: -Addressable LED strip for a pc case I recommend 1m 60 leds. Here is a link on ebay -Arduino nano as the brains of the operation. Link from ebay -Interal mini USB type B adapter. Ebay link -Sacrificial molex connector with 5v wires. -Small enclosure to protect the arduino -Some mounting mechanism, small magnets or double sided tape -16, 18 or 20 gauge wire if you want to have longer runs Tools and others: -Soldering iron and solder, nothing fancy is needed, but a flat head tip and rosin core solder makes it easier -Miscellaneous tools, scissors, hot glue, pliers, wire strippers, etc. -A drill to make holes in the enclosure -Heatshrink tubing, electrical tape works too -A working computer with the Arduino IDE and FastLED librarie installed -Optional: Multimeter to double check voltages and connections. -Optional: Third hand tool to hold everything in place while you solder -The folder containing all my code: https://github.com/Dany-Boy55/Addressable-WS2812-LED-controller With all of that covered let's get going with the software: Open the file “DIY_LEDSV1.5_Addressable.ino” and plug in your arduino to you pc. At the top of the code you should see a line that says: #define NUM_LEDS 60. Replace the number 60 with the number of leds in your strip. The next line: const String Device_Name = "Case Lights" sets the controller name, replace it if you want but keep it short. Go to Tools→ Board→ ard select your arduino version (nano and ATmega328 for the one I linked). Next go to Control Panel→ Hardware and Sound→ Devices and Printers→ (at the bottom) Unspecified → arduino or USB UART→ double click → hardware. There you should the USB serial port (COM#) where the # represents a number, remember it. Then, on the arduino software, Tools→Port→The port number found earlier. Finally upload the code with the → arrow symbol or Control+U. Some LED’s on the arduino should blink rapidly, when they stop you are done. Now for the hardware, fire up your soldering iron. Identify the white and red wires coming out of the strip and run some heatshrink down them. Grab your molex and extend the cables if needed. Solder red with red (5v) and black with white (GND). IMPORTANT: double check the voltage coming from the molex, otherwise you can fry the strip. Grab the connector that comes with the strip and the arduino. Solder the white wire to a GNP pad and the green (signal) wire to the pad labeled “2”. Drill holes in your enclosure for the USB cable and the connector. IMPORTANT: don not solder the red wire to the arduino! It is better to put some heatshrink or tape over it to prevent shorts. Fix the arduino inside the enclosure with glue and close the lid. Before you install your lights it’s a good idea to test them, so open up your case, power the LEDS from the PSU and plug the arduino into an internal USB port. In the files you got from my github there should be a folder named app, open the executable in there. Once in the app, click on “Scan for leds”. If nothing happens try it a second time after a few seconds. You should see your controller appear in the drop-down box, click "connect". From here on it should be pretty intuitive, select any pattern you like and you should see your LEDs come to life. Feel free to play around with the effects, colors speed etc. Now it’s finally time to install your LED strip and do your best to hide the mustard and ketchup cables that connect everything together. Just throw everything into the back or the base of your case and you should be fine. After you finished tidying up, play around with the app and find your favorite colors and patterns. Thank you for reading this tutorial, and even if you don’t intend to build this yourself, I encourage you to download the app and play around with the patterns and settings. If you have any ideas for new features that you would like to see added please let me know. Also if you find any bugs or problems. The next step is to see if I can find a way to use CPU and GPU temps and utilization for colors, as well as music response. I'm making progress and the feature will most likely be added during the Easter holidays. Anyway, should you have any questions I will gladly answer them the best I can. Dany out!

I do not get the big up roar about clickbait, but then I realized that the use of the term clickbait has been taken way out of context. Wikipedia says it best, "Clickbait is a form of false advertisement". What I get from this is, titles that are not relevant, nothing less, nothing more. I see way too many criticize topics in the name of clickbait. But lets take into account that it is not clickbait if you click on it and find out that you do not agree with the opinion or views on the title. Or if someone is using a better advertising phrase to increase traffic taking views away from your content.. Sounds like you may need a better writing team. As long as s title is on topic or relevant to the content, then kudos for great wording. A matter of fact, lets get away from the term clickbait unless it is truly relevant. Maybe we can just say, stop being good at using words that take attention away from me. Oh, that would make you sound like, well you know what. And don't scoff, you know who you are. 0_0 If I get a lot of negative replies, then I will sit back, crack my knuckles, kick my feet up and enjoy knowing that i got my point across. For those who are smart and already know what the difference is, enjoy the show because I just "baited" this topic, with a click?

I've been having this issue for almost 3 days now where sometimes youtube thumbnails doesn't show up. I've cleared my browser cache and cookies etc but still no luck. Sometimes they appear, sometimes they don't. I'm not having any issues with my internet at the moment so I don't know what's up. Anyone else experience this lately? Edit: And of course, when I load youtube to take a screenshot and show you, every thumbnail is there -.-

It doesn't make sense to me that a site that seems perfectly legitimate and above using clickbait, and I'll use Wired.com as a perfect example, would still be plastered with it. Below every article on their site you will always see a "Sponsored Stories" section riddled with clickbait. Yet I read an article ON THAT SITE a few months ago talking about how clickbait is a serious issue, and the 'despicable science' behind it. This is far from the only site that I've seen do this. Why do a lot of the giants of web journalism still stoop this low?

For a story on my school's journalism website I wanted to investigate just how toxic and malicious clickbait articles on popular sites actually are. A couple people here showed interest so I thought I would post the results here as well. I went to 10 sites: Anandtech.com, Techcrunch.com, Arstechnica.com, Endgadget.com, Denverpost.com (local here), CNN.com, Foxnews.com, NBCnews.com, ABCnews.com, and Theguardian.com. All of these display "sponsored links" or "from around the web" sections full of clickbait. I clicked on the first story I saw on each site, and then the first 5 clickbait "articles" there for a total or 50. Out of those 50: 21 contained more links to clickbait articles, 18 had misleading headlines that did not accurately describe the topic of the article, 9 were over two year old pages though they were labeled “new” or “trending”, 2 attempted to infect the computer with malware, 11 exhibited none of these offenses and were actually legitimate, harmless articles, and one never loaded and appeared to be a broken link. Obviously it was mostly what I expected, except for the two times a site attempted to download malware. The first, surprisingly and a little sadly, was from Anandtech. The headline read “This one weird trick is the number one reason computers run slow”. It was actually a download page for a most untrustworthy looking “computer cleanup” program. To verify its illegitimacy I went ahead and downloaded and ran it (I was using a PC I don't care about that was blocked off from the rest of the network, just in case). The program certainly did not help clean up the system as it claimed, and slowed it down so much that I couldn’t even navigate to the control panel to uninstall it and was forced to completely wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Given this PC has a Core 2 Duo E4400 and 4GB memory. The other was from CNN. The headline read “Shocking photos released by ex-White House employees”. It turned out just to be some regular old candid photos of President Obama and his family. After viewing this page for about fifteen seconds, I was redirected to a page asking me to download a program so that I may take a survey about my Comcast internet service. It was quite obviously not actually from Comcast. The program it installed took up about 10% of the computer’s resources, but didn’t do anything else noticeable. Therefore I assume that the point of this virus was to remain unnoticed by the typical user, and most likely connected the computer to a botnet. I also formatted after this one just to be safe. So...yeah. Take all that as you will.

So here is what faced me when I checked youtube this evening, So there is the usual usual, Jay, LTT, GMM, some gaming stuff, some huskie stuff, and 'PC Gamers are...' Well I was all ready to get out the soapbox and saddle up the high horse, (and I did, the first draft of this post was less polite) but first I watched the start of Rags video, in it he basically lays into another poster. I guess this is a perfect case of clickbait, and I guess it works.

So the latest Techquickie talked about clickbait, and how Techquickie never would use it. However the main channel LinusTechTips do use a lot of clickbait. The only reason I'm not subscribed to the main youtube channel is because of the clickbait videos I get in my feed. The last weeks you had, "Best PC case on the market?", "Deaths in Internet cafés", "Yi 4K Action Cam Review - The GoPro Killer!?" and the list go on. These are obvious clickbait. And I'm wondering if you guys are ever going to stop using clickbait? It obvious still works, because people are still using them, but they are still very annoying to see.

Just got a personnel message from someone asking me to "help" them post screenshots on a different forum. It was obviously a malicious website, so if you get a message from someone like this TAKE CAUTION AND DO NOT CLICK THE LINK!!!!

First of all, no one knows(besides google) how youtube algorithm works, so people like Linus who claims that it likes clickbait titles is just speculation, but here it goes my case about the clickbait that Linus uses on LTT: Veritassium last year did a video about clickbait titles and he showed that it didn't worked like people says, if you're curious about it you can check it here: If Linus has seen that Veritasium video, he 100% missed the point. Here are the examples Veritasium gives of his clickbait videos that performed well: Now compare those to some of Linus' recent videos: Every single one of the highlighted Veritasium videos has an interesting thumbnail and sentence that truthfully describe what happens in the video. Linus' thumbnails and titles leave me guessing WTF the video is about. What's the name of that folding screen laptop and why does he want to break it? What's the plan that Yvonne vetoed? What was Linus waiting for? Why doesn't Linus need internet? Who knows the answer to any of those questions, and none of them are interesting enough for me to click on the video to find out. Linus seems to think that good titles are just unanswered questions, but they have to ask a question that is actually interesting. I don't think it is a coincidence (besides Veritasium cherry-picking videos that did well) that his videos have much higher view counts than Linus', despite him having fewer subscribers (12.9 million vs 14.8 million). Most of Linus' videos get around 2 million views, which is less than 1/7 of his subscribers, and his ten most recent videos have 0.871, 1.1, 1.6, 1.9, 1.3, 1.6, 0.806, 1.7, 1, and 1.3 million views. Veritasium's most recent videos have 6.9, 6.4, 12, 7.4, 5.7, 4.4, 6.8, 22, 12, and 8.5 million views. Two out of the last ten Veritasium videos had more people his subscriber count watch them, and all but two had more than views than 50% of his subscribers. Linus's top video of all time has 22 Million Views. Veritasium has 12 videos with more views, and he's made way fewer videos. Linus' clickbait strategy objectively does not work. MKBHD, Linus' closest competitor, got nearly five times the view count on his review of the new iPhone than Linus did on his. Marques' thumbnail and title look like this: and Linus' look like this: Which one would you click on if you heard that Apple launched a new phone and you want to find out if it's worth buying?

I think one of the better comments on one of these videos says it best, "If I see another shocked face it'll make me want to kill myself." I mean Linus knows it's happening, he has to pose for the freaking shots. Is he really going to turn into people I actively avoided years ago, Tobuscus and RWJ, because of their stupid looking thumbnails? Does Linus truly have to resort to freaking 10 year old Imgur/Reddit memes? Now I know, I know, if this is what maximizes views and monetary income then it's the right decision for Linus. It's perfect for them to do. It might even get them actively on YouTube trending's list, although even that seems to be less clickbait videos this last week thank Zaros. It also might be because of his expanded team, maybe someone thought this would be a good idea and much like Diablo 3 it's a bad idea that got through. Still, one missing subscriber won't hurt them even though I'll deeply miss their videos, but these thumbnails are giving me cancer and a few (Revive your old laptop) are just pure clickbait.
