Hi, I'm trying to upgrade a system to nvme m.2 on a MSI gaming 5 z97 motherboard. I've updated the bios to the latest version, tried all combinations of settings on the BIOS, left the SATA-5 and 6 ports unpopulated (as they are disabled when using the M.2 port on this board) but I can't get it to detect the brand new 1tb nvme m2 drive I installed. Trying to install Windows 10 on it the drive still isn't recognize here either, are there proven methods to resolve this issue?

motherboard M.2 Drive With Z97X Fatal1ty Killer
Volvo240 posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hey, So I am building a budget PC based on the motherboard in the title. I have figured out everything but the SSD. I know it is SATAe, or PCIe 2.0x2. This should be capable of 1,250MB/s, which is ok for cheaper SSDs. My questions are: A: Will I get this speed provided I have a capable NVMe? B: Is there anything in the BIOS of this board that will allow me to maybe use more PCIe lanes, (like PCIe 2. X4) or make it run faster? C: What drives will not be bottlenecked by this interface? I was thinking like a WD Black 2017 or Toshiba XG5 (512GB). D: Aside from those insane AsRock boards, (Extreme6 and Extreme9), is there a Z97 board that will allow an M.2 SSD run faster? I do not want a SATA or PCIe adapter card, as I am going for a specific look with this build, and I need as many free PCIe and SATA connections as possible for future products. Thanks in advance and stay safe! -
Hello folks! First post here, hoping I can pick your brains for what might be wrong with my custom built PC. System was built by myself in 2014, it has: - Intel Core i7 4790k - 32gb DDR3 1866 HyperX Fury Ram (4x8gb) - Asus Z97 Sabertooth Mark S mono - Corsair RM1000i PSU The system worked just fine until I installed a second hand GTX 660. After installing it and connecting it to the psu, it would not post. Decided to take the GPU out and now it won't post at all, and it had a faint burning smell. Not good, I know. I tried resetting the bios, removing the cmos battery and restarting it the next day and I've tried another psu. I've stripped it down to a single 4GB DDR3 stick, the cpu and a NH-D15 cooler. The ram is tested good and I have only the 24 pin and 8 pin cpu connected. I have a Linux live usb plugged in for OS (Kali Linux, only thing I had laying around). Mobo light lights up orange (normal), and I jumped the power switch with a screwdriver. The motherboard mini fan spins and PSU fan spins for a second (as it normally does), but the display doesn't detect an input; no Asus logo or anything. At this point, it's either the Mobo or the cpu that is shot. But I would welcome your input. I'm not sure how it would have died from a gpu install, even if it is a dead gpu it shouldn't have damaged anything else shouldn't it? What are y'all thoughts? Should I get a cheap z97 board and test if the cpu is still good and rebuild the system?

I know that this is most definitely not the place to put this but i honestly could not think of anywhere else to go. I came home from college where long story short due to rules there i wasnt able to bring my pc at first. I came back from months of not playing any games only to discover that my computer wouldnt post at all. With the help of my friend we narrowed it down to the motherboard, this is why i came here. I have looked for mini itx z97 motherboards everywhere and all i find are used motherboards for 150$. Im not asking for anything except to find someone with a motherboard they would be willing to sell. I just want to play games again. Sorry for the long post and probably frowned upom subject.

Hello veryone, so, I have an MSI Z97-G43 laying around here. It seems to boot normally (at least to the EFI shell, I have no storage connected ATM). But whe trying to enter the BIOS (delete-key) or boot selection menu (F11) I only get anm A9 error in the lower right corner. Resetting the CMOS didn't help and there seems to be no documentation on the error codes (other than that A9 is the AMI standard error code for "Start of Setup", which is kinda useless). I also let it sit for a few minutes in case that helps, but no luck. The board is currrently as minimalistic as possible. Only USB keyboard, no PCI(e) devices, no storage, etc. Does anybody have an idea what I could do to get the BIOS back? I would try to reflash it, but without accessing the current bios that might also not be possible.

Ok, so I'm trying to get 3 way Crossfire going. Before any of you naysayers start going on about poor scaling and gaming performance, I don't care, I have a 1080Ti for gaming. I just need this to work for 5 minutes. This is purely for a 3D Mark achievement requiring a run with 3 or more GPUs in SLI/Crossfire Problem I'm running into, is that Radeon software only seems to recognize 2 of the GPUs. 3D mark sees all 3, but is only running in 2 way Crossfire, I can only guess is due to drivers and or Radeon Is it a problem with current Radeon Software? Drivers? Is there a build that supports 3 way? I know they've dropped support a while ago, but there's gotta be a way to make this work I have: 3x Rx 580 8gb Sapphire Nitro+ Latest Radeon software and drivers MSI Z97 Gaming Plus 5 - says it has 3 way crossfire support - Latest Bios - PCIe lanes set to 8x 4x 4x Gen 3 Celeron G1840 1200w psu 8gb Corsair 1600mhz (xmp on)

Budget (including currency): 1800$ (in 2015) Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AAA gaming, Light CAD, multimedia. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): "Upgrade or overclock" It was a dilemma I tried justifying both ways. My only issue so far is fan noise, in-game performance is great yet. I basically bought the best of the best at the time in 2015. TLDR: I bought 400$ worth of watercooling components - De-lidding stuff - Thermal Grizzly stuff - Hardline tubing - CPU & GPU blocks. 4790k - Asus Z97 Gryphon matx MOBO w/thermal Armor - Corsair Dom Plats 2400mhz Cas11 - Samsung 860 evo ssd's - GTX Titan Black 6gb FE - CoolerMaster V8 tower cpu cooler version 1 - Caselabs Mercury s5 pc case- Noctua fans - CableMod cables. Since I invested so heavily into the build already I figured it was my only opportunity to have a boutique build like these youtubers. It also gives me the opportunity to apply what I've learned about Overclocking / De-lidding / watercooling from these guys like GN/Linus/Jayz2cents/etc. over the years. It extends the life of what I own, F*** man I spent like 1800$ in 2015 for this build and more over the years in small upgrades. I'm not poor and could easily afford to just do a new top tier build but that only takes away from other hobbies and experiences or equity I could have. $400 in the grand scheme of things isn't really much considering all this time I've been running at stock speeds and just now seeing the need to "upgrade or overclock" Other solutions would be to just buy a 400$ G-card and call it a day. Or buy 400$ worth of cpu-mobo-ram I could, but then I'll still technically be mid-tier and have a loud-ish g-card. Or buy 400$ worth of watercooling stuff, stay Mid-tier with my current gear all while gaining free visible performance with some overclocks, quieting down my rig, and making it look like a custom youtuber pc. Win, win, win. I think anyways. Any criticism is appreciated. This post was made in response to Gamers Nexus recent video linked here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9HV9V5nzOc

Recently I bought a used computer and everything worked fine, until a BSOD popped up while playing a game. The error was "Memory management". So I tried looking into the problem, but I can't figure it out. My system specs are: PSU - RM850i MOBO - MSI Z97M-G43 GPU - GIGABYTE NVIDIA GTX 1060 6gb CPU - Intel i5 - 4570 SSD - HP M.2 S700 250gb and most importantly, RAM: * 2 x 2gb Kingston KVR1333D3N9K2/4G 1333MHz CL9 1.5V (https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR1333D3N9K2_4G.pdf) * 4gb Apacer AU04GFA33C9QBGC 1333MHz CL9 1.5V (https://consumer.apacer.com/eng/content.php?sn=948) So I downloaded the free version of Memtest86 and tested my RAM with all 3 sticks. I got about 1400 errors with 4 passes. Then I tried testing the modules separately and got no errors. At the moment I'm running the 2x2gb in dual channel (1/3 slots) and I additionally tested the 4gb in the remaining slots and both times Memtest86 greeted me with errors. On MSI page only the Kingston 2x2gb RAM modules are listed as compatible (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z97M-G43.html#support-mem-0), but I'm really curious as of why this is happening and what should be my actions going forward? The clocks, speeds and voltages are identical so I reckon there is no need to mess with the BIOS to try to make them work together. Is there anything I'm missing, is there a way to set them up properly or could this be a MOBO defect ? Thanks a ton everyone! PS. First time posting on forums

Would using a WD SN550 as a boot drive for a linux installation work using the m.2 10gbit/s connector on my motherboard (Asus Z97-P)? I know that the drive speed is significantly faster than 10gbit/s and would therefore be bottle necked but I've run out of SATA ports and the NVME version of a m.2 drive is about the same price as the SATA version of the m.2 drive with much higher read/write IOPS. In addition, I can always reuse the drive when I upgrade. I've tried contacting ASUS to check if NVME is bootable on this motherboard but their response was .... "Please if possible get another SSD - Samsung or Kingston(not the budget ones tho as they fail more often)" which isn't very useful. Any help would be appreciated, Many thanks.

Hey guys, I bought an i7-4790k a few days ago for $25 saying that it's defective because it gives no display. I brought it home and I quickly set up a breadboard in order to test it, with a z97 Asrock Pro 3. It doesn't have an led indicator or light but it has a classic speaker which is supposed to indicate a post code. I put the cpu in the socket and... Nothing. What should I have expected? It powers on the fans, but it doesn't even post, and after 10 seconds, it reboots and stays powered on and heating up without posting (so it is at least receiving power). I have swapped the cpu with my i5 4460 and it posts right off So I have decided to check out some mysterious black silicone marks around the IHS only to find out after prying it open (with my nail!) that it has been dellided by a previous owner... And what a shock, the cpu was covered in a whack ton of thermal paste, it was over the cpu die and the nearby transistors so when I saw that I quickly had a glimpse of hope that if I manage to clean up the mess maybe it would be ok... But nope. I tried updating the bios, resetting the cmos, leaving the battery out overnight, reapplying thermal paste but sadly, it still does not post. So, my question here is, does somebody know even the craziest idea ever to try and boot this mf? Because for $25, I might aswell try everything in order to revive it. I have attached photos of the cpu and visually, it looks very good but internally... Who knows?

Heyho lovely Forum, before I'm writing anything more I have to say sorry if didn't understood all I'm not a native english speeker I apologise. okay let's start with my big issue I bought a Pentium G3258 for 10$ used and It got never OC'd. I managed to OC it to 4,5ghz with a Z97N Gaming 5 from Gigabyte at 1.444V, 16gb DDR3 1600mhz G.Skill Trident X. Cooler Master 212X, Be Quiete 500W PSU 80+ Bronce can't tell the exzact model number but its an older model, GTX970 Gaming G edition and my lovely iiyama Prolite XB3270QS 32Inch WQHD Monitor. I swaped out my main CPU (Xeon E3 1231 v3) to have a fun time while oc and while that my bad time began. I began to have such a bad time while booting. I'm getting when I'm shutting down the pc Black screens and I have to Reset the Cmos battery to manage it to boot. The Xeon which officialy supports DDR3 1600 can't boot with 1600 I have to Downgrade it to 1333mhz to have it booted and even on 1333 I have to Clear the Cmos battery to get a boot. I wrote with some people who helped me already but don't know the issue or they are out off idea. The last advise I've got was to make a Thread in this forum. Things I already done which didn't helped : - Memtest86 - try to boot with @stock speed - Checking dead pins - Bios updating - Checking of Damaged condensators If you have any more Advice or help I appreciate it Greeting

Hey guys! After having my i5 4690K for a long time I though it was time to try overclocking. My motherboard is a MSI Z97-g45 gaming. I saw a simple guide online to follow. However when entering bios to OC settings I can't change my CPU Ratio. It just seems to be locked at Auto. I dont know which setting to change to allow overclocking? Does anybody know? Thanks

Hi everyone, Today I received 2 new 8gb sticks of Crucial Ballistic Sport DDR3 - 1600 ram off of eBay to add to my already existing sticks of the same type. I put the new sticks in and assumed everything would be fine... it wasn't. My computer went into a reset loop and after manually resetting gave me an "overclocking failed" error from the motherboard (I am not attempting nor have I ever overclocked this PC), and then a "boot drive inaccessible" blue screen whenever I bypass that and boot from the drive I always boot from. I've reset my BIOS back to default multiple times, and switched out both pairs of ram and now my original sticks aren't even allowing my computer to boot. Needless to say, I'm very frustrated as none of the other solutions I've found online have helped and I'm about to part this puppy out and build a new one as this PC is going on about 6 years old (that's a conversation for another time). Anyways, if any one could offer me some solutions as to what I need to do, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks! i7-4790k ASUS z97 - a Crucial Ballistic Sport ddr3-1600 ASUS Strix gtx 1080

Yo everybody. I built my pc in 2015 and the setup is the following: CPU: i5 4690k w/ CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO MB: Asus Sabertooth z97 mk2 RAM: 2x 8gb 1600mhz DDR3 GPU: Asus Strix GTX980 4GB DDR5 I think this is the most important, my MB / RAM (ddr3) is outdated i guess. I pretty much only use PC for gaming, the game is play the most is CS:GO/ GTA V ,although i stopped playing new games because i fear the pc is not going to run smooth. So, can you guys advice me in which hardware I should switch? If so which models you recommend. Thank you for your time , Thanks in advance. Wilson.

I got a z97extreme4 with a 4770k that barely overclocks. I know the thing used to hackintosh with multibeast into high Sierra, but I’m wondering about the new stuff. Do I have a shot with this old hardware? Would I be able to put a card on it and play the Mac games in my steam library?

Hello guys, I built a pc a couple years ago and broke the pci e slot on my mobo a couple days ago. Was looking for another mobo thats an lga 1150 socket, z97 chipset, and has some space for a 2 slot gpu and 1x sound card for somewhere from 200-300$. I currently have a i7-4790k and a rtx 2070, with 16 gb of ddr3 ram. I looked on newegg and could only find a decent looking one for 285$ but the last 10 or so most recent reviews all say that it was doa. It was the MSI Gaming Z97 GAMING 5. any suggestions are appreciated.

Hello Everyone. Unfortunately, despite being in an industry where the hardware is put under constant stress (Motion Graphic Design and VFX) I don't have the budget for a new system and I'm rocking an i7 4790K (stock speed) paired to a MSI Z97 Gaming 5. Recently I have started using some effects and techniques that put extra strain on the CPU and I have been experiencing 99° Celsius (210° F) and that can't be good.... I already have air conditioning active and a cooling fan blowing on the computer case but it's still not good enough (very hot place I live in). I wanted to purchase a double slot (2 fans) liquid cooling system for my CPU, but being the i7 4790K a bit old I'm having a hard time finding a model which is compatible with the old LGA 1150 socket my motherboard has. Do you have any recommendations for some models that are available on mainstream buying platforms? (preferably Amazon, as I have Prime). I only know of the Corsair H100i, which doesn't seem to be available at the moment. I want something functional, I don't want to spend extra money on cosmetic features like RGB and stuff (of course if only an RGB model is available I'd still get it). Purchasing a new cooling solution is quite urgent; I can't comfortably wait for products to come back in stock. Being based in Italy (unfortunately for me...) it would be extra nice if the article was available on https://www.amazon.it/ref=nav_logo Thanks.

before I ask my question, yes I know I am better off selling my 2 cards and getting a better one. i recently got a 2nd 1070 amp extreme for cheap ($125 ebay) and got a 2 slot hb sli bridge. the length is too long so I did a little research and learned there is no rhyme or reason to each manufacturer's naming system. I would prefer a zotac bridge to match my gpus,s but will gladly settle for which bridges are for approximately 60mm. the cards are are in slots 2 and 4 in an asrock z97 extreme6 if that helps. thanks in advance for the help. LTT forums are definitely the most helpful on the internet.

Hello! Please help me with a mobo decision. I have an i7 4790 and I am looking for a "new"(not used) mobo. Don't know what chipset to choose: z97 (same as I had before, but can't really find new mobo)(I know this is overkill for a non oc CPU; I need SLI) or q87 (found in a couple of places). And what differences should I expect? Ty. Edit: I have also seen some h81 mobos(most for BTC).

Hello, recently took my case apart to clean out some dust from the side panels, however when I closed it back up the computer wouldn’t boot. I started by replugging cables and removing my graphics card - as well as rearranging, reseating and removing my RAM. My computer would turn on when RAM was removed, however I can’t get a video signal without it. I used my mates spare RAM to see if the RAM was faulty, but again it didn’t boot. When holding down the power button, the on off loop was stopped, but the BAT1 cmos light flashed - so I reset the CMOS, removing the battery multiple times whilst powered off, as well as trying to jump the CMOS. But still no luck. Finally I’ve checked the build with another psu (taking apart my mates computer poor sod) still to no avail. Because ive tried all these things I’m assuming there’s something wrong with my motherboard/cpu - considering buying a new one unless anyone has any ideas, cheers BUILD : built in 2015:/ I5 4690k msi z97 5 series gtx 970 msi XTR psu 650w gold

I am running an older system that I recently updated to a 1080ti. When I upgraded I started running into a weird problem. At seemingly random times, the screen freezes and I get either blocks of neon artifacts or lines on the screen of the same color. This was not a behavior evident with my old GTX 980 and isn't when I run that card. I got the 1080ti RMAd because I assumed that had to be the issue but the new one has identical behavior out of the box. My friend thinks the card is over drawing from the PCIE slot. That doesn't make sense to me seeing as PCIE 3.0 standards should prevent that from happening but when I changed the slot the card is installed in, the same behavior persists so I am compelled to believe him. Any suggestions would be very helpful. PC Spec CPU: 4790k Ram: 16gb HyperX MOBO: MSI Z97 Krait Sli PSU: Corsair HX1000i SSD: Samsung 1tb

So I just got a new motherboard and cpu, hooked it all up, but when I power it one, the fan spins for a second, stops, then does it again in a loop. any ideas?

My current motherboard, msi z97 sli kriat, broke down. And I'm now in search of a new motherboard. The problem I'm having is that I can only find h81 motherboards in the lga 1150 socket. So I'm asking is it possible to install my i7 4790k into a h81 motherboard. P.s I live in South Africa, and they don't ship the z97 motherboard here anymore.
