So i am thinking of building my own editing/gaming rig in 2017 to start me on video editing, programming, and gaming. Originally i was going to make the system a I7 6800k with a gtx 1060 gpu (mainly for the games again) but something has caught my eye... The 12 core 24 threaded 2.2ghz base 2.9ghz boost Xeon e5 2658 v3. This processor looks amazing, but the retail price is around $1200 nowadays since was manufactured in 2014 and there are new processors that take its place. The processor is selling for $161 right now, but all of them that sell for anything close to that price (+ or - $50) are engineering samples. I wanted to know if i should get one of these engineering samples (i know about how intel doesnt really like them to be resold and all that chill) or if i should pass on it. The main thing i am concerned about is if the clock speed is truly 2.2ghz with a boost clock of 2.9ghz or if is is the 2.0ghz advertised on Ebay by the sellers. (its not uncommon to have errors like this, they usually just put what they see in cpu-Z and move on) the reason why i am concerned about this is because i know that back in the lga 2011 and 1366 days, some engineering samples could not boost clock at all or some of them did not have the same clock speed as the retail ones. Any owners or people who have knowledge of this sort of thing, do you know if there are any significant differences?

Hi so recently i acquired a cheap ASUS P6T X58 motherboard which im going to be pairing with an X5660 and OCing to 3.6GHz to match an i7 3960X and then selling the build for under $500. so i need 24GB of ram in the PC to make it look as attractive to potential buyers as possible. But the problem is that 24GB of desktop ram used or new costs alot. so i just had this crazy theory. since the IMC (integrated memory controller) is built into the CPUs and since im shoving a Xeon Server CPU into this board, does that mean now i can use ECC memory and not have issues since the IMC is built on the Xeon and the Xeon supports both ECC and regular memory? i know back then the memory controller was built into the northbridge but with LGA 1366 they introduced the IMC onto the CPU itself. i know that i7s dont support ecc but xeons do. so would my crazy theory work or has this theory have already been busted. i dont really care if the ECC function of the ram doesnt work since all i care about is getting dirt cheap ram in this board. I hope this thread will be kept for future readers who happen to come up with the same crazy theory as me and happen to stumble upon this thread, since if this theory works then this would be good reference material to people with the same question as we once did. and if this theory doesn't work well i guess it was for the sake of science...

Hey everyone, I am planning out my first storage server build for a small business. I want to rack mount because I am expecting to install up to 4 servers in the rack in the next few months. I have been planning out this first build and wanted to see what I am overlooking or not correctly selecting. I have built computers in the past, but not a server. The GPU is just to provide display. SSD is for bootdrive. Will I be alright using a regular PC PSU? It is platinum, but I am not sure if its OK or not. Is this processor powerful enough aswell? Just looking for some input to see what needs changing and what not, just a rough outline as of right now. Mostly looking to be able to access this server from anywhere, as many users will be all over the United States. P.S (if another server was created down the line to host a website, what would be some good security measures to prevent hackers? The site will be built from scratch) Thanks, Matt Possibly may be in wrong forum, I apologize

Hey Guys. A while back on Dec 1, 2015, Linus made a video about "Under $150 Budget Gaming 8 Core CPU, Motherboard & 16GB RAM". And I thought is it possible to apply this idea/concept to build a VR gaming PC? The only problem is I know close to nothing about server grade hardware and I was hoping I could get some help. The idea is mostly the same. Find 2 quad core CPUs, motherboard and RAM for cheap Get the other stuff like power, fans and what not. Install a modern GPU (I'm thinking of either a GTX1060 or GTX1070) Enjoy VR! Here are some things that I would like to improve on compared to Linus' build. Hopefully find a Xeon CPU and motherboard that supports DDR3 (It can be a bit more expensive than Linus' build) A motherboard that has more than 1 PCI-E slot. (Hopefully PCI-E x16 too.) Build a custom case so that the whole rig stays together. Right now this looks like one of the most promising options I have. Motherboard: ASUS Z8NA-D6 (ATX Form Factor) CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5667 (Quad Core, 3.06 GHz, 12MB) RAM: DDR3-1337 ECC 2x 8GB (16GB) GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 PSU: 700W 1x 512GB SSD, 1x 3TB HDD + Bluray Drive, USB 3.0 Expansion Card, Sound Card + Custom Build Case (Made out of Acrylic? Not sure.) Any input or suggestions are welcome and I will probably make a build log if things get interesting

Hello guys, i plan to build a not too expensive computer and actually i try to find a CPU. I am wondering if the price for a x5650 (at least twice as much as for a x5570) is worth it. Honestly it is unlikely that i find a deal for only the twice ...

Hey guys, I am at a real crosspoint. I am looking to buy this MSI MS-7769 motherboard used for Lenovo Erazer X700 and I am looking to place a Xeon E-2670 v1 in the place of the I7-3930K that I am sure it works with. Both have LGA 2011 slot but from Intel site it says that the Xeon has LGA 2011 socket R and the I7 has no socket R description. Please guys, I need advice. Is it a positive match? There is no specification sheet for the MSI board, nowhere to find anything, anywhere... Super extra mega sad. Did anyone tried this build or something similar? Is there anyone who can provide some deep help? I just have a few hours to make the deal and I am going nuts... I offer BJ's for the helping hand. LOL! Thanks guys!

Hi everyone I'm planning a new PC that is focused on gaming, but also capable of doing CAD and rendering the created parts. The scenario it’s planned for is the following: work stuff from 8am to 3pm with chrome and word being the main tasks. 4pm to 7pm doing some CAD (Creo 3.0), nothing big I don’t need professional parts Gaming from 8pm to 10pm Render from time to time over the night (100% CPU load for 60-90 minutes) I don’t want to overdimension the build so these are the questions I’m interested about What advantages do I have with the Xeon over the 6600k except from hyperthreating that neither the games nor the CAD software benefit from? Will I have disadvantages with the Xeon? Can I argue that the Xeon is more durable? Which CPU do you consider the better investment in the future? Will I have problems upgrading to a M.2, a dual GPU setup or stuff like that in the future? Does the Xeon justify the (in Germany) 80€ more over the i5? Greetings from Germany kraxelaxel

I just wanted to know if I should go for a Xeon E3 1120 or a i5 4460, they are both quad cores Xeon has 2MB more cache and costs 40€ more. So is it worth it? Im gonna use my pc mostly for gaming

$150 used hardware, low power xeon based PC.
suchamoneypit posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Im looking for a <$150 PC made using only used hardware (purely for cost saving) that will be meant to be use as a router because im so done with my Netgear router's horrendous interface that never works. I figured Xeons are the best bet, but im not familiar with the best low-cost Xeons and their respective motherboards. Anyone want to help out and throw around some links? Im fine with ebay and stuff. Im thinking if anything the case might have to be purchased new so I could get a nice small form factor case or something. Smaller the better. Power efficiency is also important here.- 5 replies

hi so i have an intel Xeon X5460 CPU that i managed to overclock to 4.0GHz. what would be a safe temp for the CPU and the cores under load. i know intel says the case spec for this CPU is 63c but when i play bf4 or fallout 4 the hottest CPU core would sit at a toasty 69c to 73c at times. is that a safe temp for my CPU. i feel like that is too hot.

Hi guys/girls, I work for fujitsu and can get this server quite cheap: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/fujitsu-primergy-tx1330-m1-tower-server-e3-1220-v3-8gb-no-hdd-8x2.5-sv-003-fj.html I am wondering, since the CPU does not have integrated graphics will i need a discrete GPU in order to run windows server with a GUI? I am thinking yes but this is my first server so am a bit unsure. Thanks in advance Alex

Hi so recently I got a free PC on Craigslist and I just fixed it up and upgraded some things in there and I'm wondering how much would I be able to make off it. I spent $25 total in upgrades for the PC like the Xeon x5460 CPU and the mod sticker. So how much do you think I can sell this PC for? I've got an X99 board. I have two Xeon E5-2650s both of them cause the red CPU LED to light and it won't post. When I clear the CMOS it posts just fine. Eveytime it goes to sleep or I turn it back on I have to clear the CMOS. This is annoying because none of my BIOS settings will save because of the CMOS clear. Why do I have to clear the CMOS for Post?

Hello Guys, Around April 20th I bought my first real rack server, an ex corporate 2nd hand HP Proliant DL160 G6. It came with pretty weak Xeon L5630's, 16GB DDR3 ECC and a 460 watt PSU. It is in a U1 server chassis, and so far I love it. I recently upgraded from dual L5630's to dual X5670 CPUs' and it pull's like a train although running hot. It has a pretty bad HDD in it, at only 160GB, but the price is what I'm happy about, the server was €125 and the CPU ugrade was €170. That is including delivery fees, which for heavy servers was less than I expected. What was your first server>?

Any one have a similar system? I'm considering getting a used x5650 and a x58 motherboard for under 250$ cad, is this a good deal? Apparently the x5650 is easily overclockable into 4ghx+, and its 6 true cores offer great performance. Is this a crazy idea or a really cheap way to get a really powerful machine?

I have a friend thats basically a hoarder, so hes got lots of HP computers and i just sold my mobo and cpu to upgrade to intel. He has a Intel Xeon E3-1220 up for grabs for 90$ i was wondering if i can get a nice 1155 mobo and game with it? He also has some rigs lying around, im coming by his house tomorrow to look at them. How would it perform? Edit: The xeon was from HP ProLiant ML110 G7

Hi everyone, and thanks for stopping by, So I'm willing to build a cheap PC for rendering only around a used Intel Xeon E5-2670 I was able to get that CPU for less than $60, but the problem was in the mobo. I know it must be an x79 mobo with LGA 2011 socket, but most of them even used will cost me over $150. I have very little knowledge about server motherboards, but I heard that I can use them for this build. My question is: which cheap used server/consumer grade motherboards I can use for this build? Thanks in advance!

Hi so today on craigslist i got a free computer and when i brought it home and opened the side panel i was surprised to see a high end p45 LGA 775 motherboard, high end radeon GPU of its time, high tier PSU, good CPU cooler, and 4gb of high speed DDR2 memory. so now the only thing missing is the HDD which i have plenty of. so my question now is should i buy a cheap X5460 Xeon and do the Xeon mod on this board? ive done the mod once and it worked this is a high end board so i should be able to get really high overclocks with the xeon cpu. plus the whole point of this is so i can sell the PC back at a higher profit like maybe $200 or $300. the only thing i have to pay for is the Xeon cpu. i already have the mod stickers so should i do the mod?

Hi all, I am looking to build a new server. My current one is linked in my signature. I am upgrading mainly because I would like more memory and expansion. Here is the build I have come up with: Motherboard: Asus P10S-E/4L CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240L v5 2.1 GHz quad core 8MB cache /w hyperthreading RAM: 2x Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-2133 ECC UDIMM CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9x65 Case Fans: 3x Noctua NF-A14 140mm 3pin Case: Fractal Design R5 PSU: Fractal Design Edison M 450W I will be reusing my LSI 2008 reflashed HBA, 8x 4TB WD Reds and 2x Intel DC 120GB SSDs from my current server for storage. I will be using FreeNAS OS with some virtualized Linux machines plus Windows 10 machine for torrent seed box. I would like to get some feedback (good or bad) on my proposed build from the community Cheers, Alex
