So I was previously looking at the Gigabyte G1 GTX 970 for around $359 And the Sapphire R9 290X is going for $299 right now. I just need some recommendations for a good ~300(USD) graphics card to in my first build for gaming and overclocking. Is going for another graphics card a better 'budget' choice considering I would save some money and that some of the 970 users are having trouble with low optimization? My build in planning below. (The only other thing I need that I don't have is a mid tower case) PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($96.99 @ Newegg) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($30.99 @ SuperBiiz) Motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($83.99 @ NCIX US) Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card ($359.99 @ Amazon) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($69.99 @ NCIX US) Total: $641.95 I am trying to see if I can cut down the cost but have similar performance for 1080p high frame gaming/overclocking. Should I just be waiting until there are (possible) price drops since I will be able to wait until August if I have to.

The card i am thinking about getting Sapphire Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X OC 8192MB GDDR5 Link http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-353-SP My first question. Is this card the Sapphire Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X OC 4096MB Better than the stranded R9 290x the reference card as i had that before in terms of playing games will i get a better fps. And my second question should i get this card as the 4gb gddr5 version or the 8gb gddr5 version will i notice a diffrence with 4 more gigs of ram in games or is that only for people who do video editing. My Monitor is 1920x1080 and is 144hz i will not be playing any game about 1920x1080

specs: i7 3770K 2x reference MSi R9 290's EVGA SuperNOVA G2 1000w Asus Sabertooth z77 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, so I've had more than 99 issues with crossfire, and up until a 2nd windows reload, this DEFINITELY wasn't one... Got a second r9 290 for christmas. Everything went sh***y pretty fast, and because I thought it was a driver conflict, and me only partially deleting drivers beforehand I reinstalled windows. During my 1st reload, everything went bad for a while as well. Eventually I learned it was most likely ULPS, so I disabled it and pow! My system was running amazingly, Was getting 150fps in bf4 at max, 70 at max in crysis, 180 in bl tps, etc....... Aaaaaaand then I started experiencing crashes, hangs, etc. when I rebooted my pc. It started off as games crashing, and then it turned into my whole computer hanging until I forced shut down via power button. I couldn't find a fix and relied on reloading. I reinstalled my windows for the 2nd time, last night. after I got everything installed, I reinstalled GPU-Z to see this.... (Main card - New card) (2nd card - Old card) my older card running like it's a 290x. I bought that card brand new back in august, and haven't attempted to flash it's bios AT ALL. The only thing I've actually done is overclocked it via MSi ab, and that doesn't even RELATE to flashing the card's bios. My new card I bought (used - like new) from a trusted vendor. Nothing sketchy at all. So why & how exactly did this happen? As far as I know the reference MSi r9 290's didn't even have capability of being flashed to r90x's. I'm confused and I don't know what to do at this point. I can't run any games without them hanging, and my computer isn't stable anymore. `I want to confirm that both of these cards work fine on their own, in the top slot, and the 2nd slot. `Heat is not the issue at all, they both run with a maximum of 80c (which is perfectly safe for the r9 290(x) series. `when I was running them overclocked in my 1st reload of windows I was running with a Power limit of 20+, core clock of 1050, mem clock of 1350, and fan speed at 75% (it never reached 85c) Although I'm not running them overclocked now. `ULPS is disabled (through registry) `I have the latest drivers `When I installed windows, I installed with only one r9 290 in the system, and once I had all of the drivers installed, I then installed the 2nd.

Heyo, right now I have a dilemma GPU wise, I currently have 3 R9 280Xs (mining hype, plz don't judge) and I was wanting to wait for the 390/X release and see the prices, performance, average temp and all those other deciding factors. Now I have included the decision of getting two 290Xs as soon as I am able to sell the three 280Xs, I'm fine with just a single 280X because I only plan on playing games at 1080p max, but seeing as I have some money to burn I'd like to take a step up into the big guns and secure that >60 fps max settings for a little while longer (and ofc bragging rights). I realise that I'm running off speculation with the 390, but I just want to know you guys' opinion on this matter. I am leaning towards the 390 and 390X, just depends on the pricing and if the 390X isn't too far fetched when it releases. If I do decide on the 390(X) than I'd like to sell two of the 280Xs I have now, and then the remaining when it comes out. And just for reference what do you guys think is a reasonable price for a/three 280X(s)? I bought them for a total of $950 in March last year. I've hardly even used two of them, and the other one i my system now has only been used for gaming (bout 200 hours in the 10 months I've had them) and normal use. I was thinking min 270 AUD, but advice would be appreciated. TL;DR: Should I sell two of my 280Xs now and wait for the 390/X and buy one, or sell all three 280Xs now and buy 2 290Xs. Additionally advice on selling price for the 280Xs would be appreciated. Cheers! @alby800

Hello, fellow LTT members. I'm stumped about a new video card (R9 290X) my brother got for X-mas. When I got around to putting it in his case and uninstalling all the drivers. It would run well for a while then just randomly crashing. So I put it in my PC, (more powerful PSU), to check if it was the card was bad. It ran fine in my PC for a good week. So after that I ordered him a new PSU (same one I have 750W) We got that in today. We installed the PSU and the card...and it still crashes. We reinstalled windows since it was kind of a crappy install anyways. Yet it still crashes. Any guess would great. The card doesn't seem to be over heating as the temps are around 70C The card can crash at random times, when watching something like youtube, Netflix or even playing a game. Tell him if you need any info. Right now I'm installing an extra fan in the top to eliminate any part on the MOBO over heating, and resting the BIOS right now. Some more info. New card R9 290X CPU some AMD 4 core AM3+ I think PSU CX750M OS: Windows 7 64-bit fresh install. Old card was a 7850 and it ran fine. **EDIT**My only guess right now is that since the R9 290X is much longer than the 7850 is that it's over heating the NB as thats the only thing was hot when checking it out right after it crashed. (over heating it by cutting of the air flow from the front of the case)

Hey guys I'm planning on getting a new GPU and both of the mentioned GPU's are available for the same price in my country. Usually I'd go for the 970 and i know it's benefits, but I want to upgrade my monitor soon and FreeSync looks so sexy. What do you think would get me the better gaming experience. GTX 970 + normal 1080p monitor or the R9 290x + FreeSync. The noise isn't much of a problem because it's going to be placed rather far away. Pls try to explain your decisions and don't just say which one is better.

Hello everyone! As i'm writing this i am really desperate because i recently got an upgrade for my gaming rig, a sapphire tri-x r9 290x and a evga supernova g2 750. I booted it up and i tried to run guild wars 2. I had normal settings and the fps was 10-30 fps. I know this card can run this game ultra very easily. I tried uninstalling drivers with UDD and reinstalling to the newest driver 4 times. No improvement whatsoever. I tried messing with the bios, looking up online, i checked the temperatures, wich were normal too. Everything seemed completely normal. However, in ccc, during gameplay, the core clock only rose to 870+ but i dont think thats the problem. Specs: Cpu: a10-6800k richland Gpu: r9 290x (previosly i had a hd 7750) Hard drive: 1TB PS: evga supernova g2 750 Ram: 8gb mobo: msi a88x gaming assassins creed edition fm2 Guys i'm really desperate. I dont want to have a 380 euro piece of plastic. HELP!!!

I have had a MSI R9 270 gaming for almost a year now and I am thinking of upgrading. Should I just get another 270 or should I go for the 290x? I have seen some posts about the crossfire 270 beating the r9 290 in a lot of games, but how future proof is it?

Hey Guys, So I just moved house and I dont have quite as much room as I use to, so I was looking to do some small upgrades to my rig and the biggest change would be moving into a small form factor case. My rig at the moment: Radeon HD6870 i7 950 LGA1366 Asus P6X58D-E Motherboard 4x 6Gb G. Skill Ripjaws 1600Mhz Ram 2x 1080p 60Hz monitors So I'm looking to upgrade the graphics card to a R9 290x, but its a little worrying in a small form factor case with the heat output, I will be getting another 1080p monitor as well, but ill only be gaming on one monitor at a time. As for cases my ideal one would be a Bitfenix Prodigy, but they obviously take a MATX board. So any other suggestions for the case and graphics card would be great. I'm willing to change the board but would prefer not to. Thanks,

Hi everyone. A major reseller here (Norway), is offering Sapphire R9 290x Tri-X 4GB for 2959nok (~375$), normal price 3695nok (~469$). I did some research and found out, that with my current PSU (CM V550S - 550w) I should be able to run the GPU in my system (full rig in my profile), just without the OC. I have a 1080p monitor at the moment, possibly getting a 1440p one in the future. Also my current GPU (R9 285) is entirely fine, I just would like something with more kick and more future proof. Any opinion, that could sway me either way, appreciated.

Hello people, I have a weird problem that I have not found a solution to. The problem is that my monitor starts to flicker and if nothing done to it makes my screen turn black and possibly restart/stop my computer. I am using MSI afterburner to stabilize my frequencies and I wonder what problem I have with the card. I hear that multiple people owning a R9 290x has problems with driver etc. So here is a small video of the flickering while I re-install my drivers for the 100th time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l00ZNcTWuVU&feature=youtu.be And when I use MSI afterburner to stabilize this I have to use it everytime i start my pc. I also have a problem when I connect my 19" LG monitor to the videocard, my main monitor turns off and does not receive any signal, it says cable not connected, but It is. I connect my LG monitor to a DP - VGA adapter then I hook it up to my screen. Nothing is showing an image, I once had them running together (But with a crapload of artifacts and lines on both screens I just gave up, because nobody is having the same issue as me. Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it (Y)!

I just killed my r9 290x (the geto mod for a aio (uneven pressure which cracked the gpu die)) I can get another one for 200$ or I can get a gtx 770 for the same price and for an extra 75 I can get a gtx 780. my plans are to go 4k eventually (sometime soon) and was wondering which of the cards I should get because everything else is basically out of my price range

Screen speckling with dvi to hdmi on DirectCUII R9 290x
Toradoshi12 posted a topic in Graphics Cards
Alright so I noticed on my friend's new amd build that there were some speckling issues when using the DVI-D to HDMI cable that came with the graphics card. The card outputs fine when we used a regular hdmi to hdmi cable, so I'm figuring it's the cable and not the graphics card, but I'm not too sure. We don't have a dvi to dvi cable lying around so we can't check that unfortunately. -
I would like to cool my r9 290x better (and quieter). The arctic accelero Hybrid ii Looks like a good and fairly cheap solution. Has anybody got this, because I couldn't find any benchmarks or anything. So which temps do you get and how much fps on the newest games? How much can you overclock it? The kraken g10 looked nice, but I live in Denmark and I just can't really find some vram heatsinks, it is more expensive and I do not have too much space in my case for a really good closed loop system. The hybrid II just looks like an easier solution in general.

Hi all, Just replaced my 650ti with the Asus R9 290 and i am experiencing crashes, restarts and blue screens. I have a Corsair CX750w Psu. I experience a crash mid way through game normally after about 1-3 hours in but in some case has crashed only 15mins in! I have an overclocked FX6300 to 3.7GHz and my motherboard is the Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 (PCI 2.0) Please help, thanks.

What should i get for money value and FPS per $. I was about to buy a pair of GTX 970 when i saw on recent GTX 980 Classified Review on LinusTechTips channel that the 290x is really close to the GTX 970. I might do a bit of an overclock on the cards, so thats a point for Maxwell, but the 290X is cheaper... Does anybody have a chart with an FPS per $ on this cards? What would be your recomendations and why? Thanks,

Perhaps many of you are familiar with Hawaii, the venerable GPU powering the fastest graphics card in the world the R9 295X2 along with AMD's enthusiast R9 290x and R9 290 offerings. So it may come as a shock to you to hear that this GPU is in fact the most power efficient General Purpose GPU in the world to date. Powered by AMD's FirePro S9150 accelerator based on the Hawaii GPU, L-CSC has earned the #1 spot in the latest Green500 list of the most power efficient supercomputers in the world. The previous #1 spot holder the TSUBAME-KFC powered by Intel Ivy Bridge CPUs and Nvidia K20 GPU accelerators fell into third position. Capable of 4.4 gigaflops/watt, compared to the AMD powered L-CSC which is capable of 5.27 gigaflops/watt.
