Hello dear LTT community ! I'm reaching out to you to get some help hoping I can revive my recently bought R9 290. First things first. About a week ago I ordered a 'refurbished by Sapphire' R9 290 with its stock cooler for like 135€. I received it this morning : So I properly unboxed it and installed it in my system (GA-990XA-UD3, FX 6300 @4.2 & 8 GB 1866 DDR3), then I booted into windows 10 and wanted to see if it was recognized correctly. It was but something was intriguing me. Since the card was sold by Sapphire, I expected these ugly stickers on the cooler as well as the subvendor ID being Sapphire but nope, it turned out to be a pure AMD branded R9 290 like the picture above. I then wanted to see what it had under the hood (I was approximately expecting something like an 85% improvement over my heavily overclocked 7870) and I ran a Firestrike benchmark, here are the results. I was extremely happy with those results, and the card's temps really impressed me : hovering around 72°C in the graphics tests, with the fan going up to 65% (damn it was loud). Then let's get into the meat of this topic : for some reason I wanted to reboot my computer and then, I got my mobo's splashscreen, as usual but then, nothing, a black screen. So I unplugged the card, put a 750 Ti that was lying around as primary card, and then the 290 as secondary and it booted up fine. I then opened GPU-Z and noticed that the clockspeeds were glitched : Instead of having 947 on the core and 1250 on the memory, I had 0 on both. Well, I really hope you can help me fix my card because I'd like to avoid RMA if possible (I can RMA it but it would take so much time o_o). Thank you guys for your time :3 !

So it begins: (sorry about the shitty picture quality :c) A little bit of backstory: My 290's middle fan decided to break it's axle (is it even called an axle?), therefore VRM1 gets to 121 C (!!!) and the GPU itself starts thermal throttling. Also, because of said snapped axle thing, whenever I try run it the repeated clicking is unbearable... So I decided to watercool it c: Plan: I will mount the watercooler to the GPU with my friend in a few days, using that time to test if it's a defective unit in terms of leaks and whatnot. Then, it'll have a Titan X shroud modded on to it because why not before overclocking it to hell with a custom BIOS c:

So i got an r9 290 to go along with my 290x for ethereum mining . The hawaii chip isn't known for it's power efficiency , and since i have 2 it's pretty bad . Problem is those 2 cards produce a lot of heat ( room is at least 10C above the rest of the house ,and has bad airflow ) and the rig is very noisy . I've already made a custom fan curve to keep the fan noise as low as it could go , and i have a fan pointing at the cards . Both cards have a very decent cooler ( sapphire tri-x ) . My pc is in common house space , and the heat and noise is very annoying for my family . so they asked me to either shut it off ( which i don't want to do = mining ) or find a solution . We don't have a spare room to put it in , so moving the rig is out of the question . But i had an idea : what if i could buy used stuff on ebay and hack myself a cheap watercooling loop for the gpu's ( cpu isn't an issue ) and put the radiator outside ? Would it be technically feasible ? It would get rid of the bulk of the noise and the heat would be exhausted outside . Is there any reason this wouldn't work ? If it is possible , is there anything i should look out for ? And does anyone else have any cheap ideas like this ? I'm not talking about a custom waterloop with rgb lighting and colored liquid with special pumps . Just scavenged parts off ebay , simple tubing and a used radiator ( potentially a car radiator ) ?

I tried to update my r9 290 to the newest drivers 16.6.2,in windows 10 64bit and my pc crashed mid way through, when i tried restarting the pc after the windows logo would pop up it would just go to a black screen. I was then able to enter windows using safemode and save everything i wanted, and then i formated my pc and now it boots normally, right when the driver install gets to amd video driver(or something along the lines of it) i hear the windows sound of disconnecting and then my pc goes into black screen and crashes. for some reason i tried instaling the drivers using my integrated gpu and i went past the amd video driver step, only to 5 seconds after proceed to BSOD while saying thread_stuck_in_device_driver after this i had to enter windows in safemode again and use a display driver unistaller to get back to ground 0 so i guess i don't know how to instal drivers Edit: in the device manager, graphics card is listed as "Placa grafica basica da Microsoft" so something along the lines of basic microsoft graphics card PC Specs: Asus Maximus VI Hero i7 4770k stock Sapphire r9 290 Tri-X 16 gb corsair ddr3 @ 1600mz crucial mx 100 240gb Corsair AX 760

hello everyone ive been a pc master race person for 2 years now and just recently gotten my hands on a r9 290 that i got cheap from a place like ebay. ive been ussing it for a few months now and so far no issues except for that one mistake i made when i decided to go for a bloody Reference card... you know where this is going... i want to replace the cooler with either the extreme 3 or 4. the only reason why i havent simply just went on and got the 4th edition. is because i have heard that arctic's new way of cooling the vrms with that backplate is retarded?

I have had a R9 290 Tri-x for about 2 years now. I decided to over clock it to test its full capability. I used AMD crimson (latest version) to over clock it. I made a profile for a game I was playing, CSGO(not to increase performance in-game, just to test it on an actual game). I OC'ed +25% and 10% Voltage with 1400Mhz for RAM. It ran smooth and thought it was safe for gaming. I left it there and played a few games. I later tried to relaunch the game. I was greeted with a black screen. I had no choice but to force shutdown. When I turned it on, I would get a black screen after the windows logo(Windows 10). After several force restarts it start self diagnosing etc. I thought it was either graphics problem or OS so I removed the power cables going to my graphics card and ran graphics from my mobo. It booted and i was able to use it. I was greeted with broken AMD Crimson. I reinstalled it and plugged in my graphics card again but I still get the same issue. How do I fix this?

Hi guys, Im planning on getting a new cpu the i5 4460 with the msi b85-g43 gaming but i dont know if its compatible with my cm G750m or r9 290 royalqueen and if it will fit in my cm k380 case can someone please look this up for me or if you already know tell me? I have indeed googled it already but i cant find good info or someone with the same build already.

Hi guys, im thinking of buying a i5 4460 to replace my a10 5800k wich bottlenecks my r9 290. Im getting a really shitty 8-15 fps in arma 3 atm and im wondering if a i5 4460 will do me any better. Does anyone also have the i5 4460 with a r9 290 maybe? I wanna know if its worth it

I have a sapphire R9 290 vapor-x, and since there is no water blocks for it (it has a different pcb than the 290x vapor x sadly), I was thinking of a universal block, since the vrm has its own cooling solution anyways (it has a heatsink that doesnt make contact with the main heatsink, meaning its aircooled anyways). Would this be possible or would I be wasting my time and money. Also would the ram need cooling or does that not get that hot?

I've bought DarkSouls3 a few days ago and after launching the game, i've experienced some weird render glitches. In the Video below, most of these pixel blocks look completely white, but often you're still able so see some of the texture in them. I had this with a few other games (Metro 2033 Redux and Witcher3), but there they happened just a few times, so it wasn't a real issue (on all other game i have, i don't encounter this problem) Does anyone of you know what can cause these errors and is there a possible fix (no warranty left on the card)? (Sry if somebody already posted this already, but weren't able to find anything like this yet)

I have a reference r9 290 that I used in a previous water cooled build. No longer use that card and trying to help a friend improve his computer. Went to install the reference cooler back on since he does not have a water loop in his computer. When installing I realized I no longer have the center tension piece that goes on the back of the card that appears to tighten it to the main part that needs to be cooled. There is an attached image that shows which piece I am actually talking about since my description is severely lacking details. Does anyone know if these can be replaced, or if not that then maybe a work around to make it still work? edit: sorry as well if this post is in the wrong place. Wasn't sure where the best to post this would be. edit: Looks like I found a local guy that is selling water R9 290s with water blocks on them that is willing to give me the part! Assuming he follows through my crisis will be solved. edit: Managed to find local guy that was selling R9 290s with water blocks on them. This said person was nice enough to help me out with my situation and gave me the part.

So, I've been bitching around for a while now because of the thermal performance of my GPU. I have a XFX R9 290 with the reference cooler. I at first was amazed at the power that this little monster can provide, but i figured out that you can't be cheap, powerful and efficient all at the same time. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago i thought it was time to solve the noise / heat / throttling situation i was facing, and ordered a Arctic Accelero III aftermarket cooler on Aliexpress. Today I've received it and proceeded with the installation. Here is the log So, here's my victim And here it is side by side with my (gigantic) savior It's time to disassemble, and here I use the literally most useful thing Linus taught me. Having a place to put stuff. After disassembly a little comparison between the two coolers Everything clean and ready to receive the new heatsinks The heatsinks that came with the cooler already had a thermal tape pre installed. There were two different sizes, and the smaller of them was still not small enough to cover my VRM, so i had to cut it in half. (sorry for the shaky pic) For the other VRM, I've opted to use a piece of the base plate of the stock cooler. I've done that because on some online forums I've read people weren't getting a decent cooling performance with the heatsinks provided. Everything is set now. BUT, nothing is easy on this life is it? I've found out that the heatsinks wouldn't allow the cooler to come in contact with the GPU. The movement when I've tried to place the cooler made some of the heatinks fall off. For the ones that did, I've used the provided silicon plaster to glue them in place. For the others, I've left the stock tape. I guess universal isn't really universal right.? Anyway. I had to cut one of the fins of the upper heatsinks, and two on the bottom so everything could fit nice and tidy. After that it was time to fix everything on it's place. I was having a really hard time to align everything properly, so I've used some straightened paper clips to guide the holes when placing the cooler down. And here are some really blurry shots of everything assembled. I really don't know what happened that the camera got so shaky. As of now, I've left the whole PC upside down because i don't really trust the tape / glue provided with the kit, and I want to let the "cure" at least for sometime. So, you guys wanna hear some results right? With the stock cooler the GPU would reach 94ºC quite fast, and it would reduce it's speed to prevent overheating (as if 94ºC wasn't already overheated ¬¬). Now, with the Artic Accelero Extreme III installed the GPU won't go above 64ºC anytime, wich means a solid 30ºC reduction on it's temperature. Though, as i said nothing is perfect. If you look closely, you'll see that VRM 1 temperatures are way higher (91ºC). This happens because the heatsinks provided being so small were far from enough to dissipate all the heat they generate. Thing are safe though. VRMs are known to be designed to work up to 125ºC and still be ok, so there is a quite large margin here. Perhaps I'll use another piece of the stock cooler plate to cover the VRM1 and reduce it's temperature. But it's work for another day Bottom line, despite being a pain in the ass to assemble, the Arctic Accelero Extreme III is a great replacement to noisy and inefficient fans, without going the liquid cooling route. Temps ans specially noise levels were drastically improved, and now I can consider myself a happy owner of a (near) silent gaming PC .

This is my first post ever on LTT or any tech forum for that matter, so bear with me. I'm getting GPU usage drops on my XFX R9 290 from ~95% down to 0-5% while in games like League of Legends, Guild Wars 2, and various other games. This causes massive FPS drops from >60 down to the 20s. I am monitoring GPU usage with MSI Afterburner. I usually play with VSYNC on, but the problem occurs regardless. What's especially strange about it is that in bench marking programs like Unigine Valley, I don't get GPU usage drops other than when the program changes scenes. This only seems to happen in games. I am using the latest drivers from AMD. I have attached screenshots of my MSI Afterburner OC and also the GPU usage and FPS I got in Guild Wars 2. So... I ordered a Kraken G10 mount and Kraken X31 AIO for my r9 290. But for what I have read is that VRM is left uncovered and will give a considerable heat output to make me worry. Currently my reference cooler runs the VRM elements always below 70 even if the GPU core touches 90-91 C* (i hate the temp, but people say it's fine, but I don't like the noise anyway, thus liquid cooling). What I have a question about is these little things I ordered... and whether they actually make a difference? These tiny, measly copper heatsinks. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121875342218

r9 290 r9 290 Will crash unless memory speed is at 1100MHz.
iTriggz posted a topic in Graphics Cards
Hello, I have had this card for a while now, and kind of just dealt with the fact it runs at this speed. Recently I had finally finished putting money into my car, having some extra money to spend on my computer again, and would like to do an upgrade. The problem is, I want to get 2 r9 290's in crossfire, but they will only run at 1100MHz if I do.(If I run at stock memory clock speed, after about 20min of gaming it crashes, which is a common problem for these cards.)I have done a lot to try to fix this problem(Listed Below.)Does memory speed matter enough that I should get an Nvidia card SLI?@ STOCK 1250MHz - CRASHED@ Underclocked 1100MHz - NEVER Crashes. @ Overclocked 1350MHz - CRASHED(Obvious I guess.) Hello, i think i'm having some issues with my Gigabyte R9 290 3x windforce. When i play the game Rust on the lowest settings possible, with no post processing or anything on i get a maximum of 40-50 fps. Though, my friend who has a GTX 660( i think ) gets 60+ even when on medium-high graphics, from what i've read and understood on many places this is only a problem with the R9 290 and Rust( correct me if i'm wrong ). I've reinstalled drivers, checked bios, checked memory, installed game on my ssd, checked temps on cpu, mobo and ofcourse the gpu. I still can't figure out what the problem is, if it's the game that is poorly optimized for amd cards or if there's something wrong with my 290. I would appreciate any help as i get a fairly bad fps in any game i play. I bought the card for 3990 SEK which is about 646 CAD, and it should really not run all games as bad as my old HD 6870 1GB. Please help :C Here are my full specs: CPU: FX 8370E @ 4.0 ghz Stable & tested GPU: Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 Windforce 3X OC HDMI DP 2xDVI 4GB at 1040 mhz core and 1250 mhz memory. RAM: 8GB Corsair 1600mhz, long time since i bought it, but still works and shouldn't be the problem. MOBO: Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 PSU: Corsair GS600 W SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB HDD: Samsung HD103SJ 1TB( not currently used for any games, only downloads etc )

Hi there, I'm having performance issues with my XFX R9 290. Particularly massive drops in GFX usage (to 0%), resulting in freezing and atrocious frame drops. My first thought was the possibility of thermal throttling, but the temperature of my card never surpasses 70c, averaging around 65c when under load. I've read that the maximum recommended temperature is 95c, so I'm pretty confident that this is not a heat issue. My CPU is nowhere close to thermal throttling, bringing in a max temperature of only 33c (using the Kraken X61 Water Cooler). The memory clock also drops down significantly at the same time the usage drops occur. (I'm using MSI Afterburner to monitor my computer while gaming). These issues usually occurs after 5-10 minutes of gaming. If I close the game, then start playing again, I experience no issues until this 5-10 minute mark. These FPS drops make games like Battlefield 4 and Dirt Rally unplayable, as mere seconds make a difference between victory and defeat. I'm hoping I can remedy this problem, rather than replace the card. I'm currently using the 15.11 Beta drivers. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hey there LTT forum, I have a Gigabyte Windforce OC R9 290 in my rig right now (in sig) and I want to know if u guys think it would be worth it to water cool the card. At idle it sits around 45-50 degrees and reaches about 85 degrees under full load. I know these temps are high but from what I've heard it's pretty standard for this card. I've seen some guys online go ahead and use a 120 mm aio cooler to cool the card down to much lower temps. What interests me is not getting higher OC headroom (I couldn't care less for this) but rather to have a quieter card. Right now even opening facebook tabs has the card making noise so I'd like to find a way to cap that. Would any 120 mm aio cooler (like h55, h60, cooler master 120V, etc) work? And would I need something like the kraken g10 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835146037) to cool the vrm's or is there another way? I'm a noob when it comes to watercooling so I am seeking your help LTT.

This is a plead for help from anyone, anyone who has a PowerColor PCS+ R9 290. The stock BIOS/Firmware is well known to crash randomly. Updated BIOS was realeased by raymond.hsu@powercolor.com, but I'm not sure is he still works for PowerColor. If anyone has this card with the new BIOS, please send it to me. I want my card to be usable. Thank you all.

Hello All, I have a Asus R9 290 DirectCU II since years ago and i never able to make this card works to its best performance, tried to make a fresh install of Window 10 and latest AMD Crimson driver did not help too. Been playing around the settings but non of it makes any different other than FPS drop... I'm starting to think whether is there any bottleneck by other hardware. Please help to advise for what can i do to improve it, i've been waiting for year to play Bns but the graphic really turn me down... Here is my setup. Hello! I'm a little new when it comes to PC building, well I haven't built anything yet, I just upgraded the existing desktop that we have for my brother as a gift. It was a pre-built HP desktop which has: CPU: AMD A10-6800K MOBO: MSI MS-7778 (Jasmine) http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c03343058 RAM: HP Generic RAM 10GB ( 1x8gb, 1x2GB) PSU: Generic 400W GPU: Some GPU Case: HP Case So Far the upgrade that we did is: CPU: AMD A10-6800K MOBO: MSI MS-7778 (Jasmine) http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c03343058 RAM: HP Generic RAM 10GB ( 1x8gb, 1x2GB) PSU: Corsair RM850W GPU: Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X 4GB Case: HP Case So far the game we tested are these: CS: GO - 10-20 FPS 1080 (wierd) Skyrim - some areas 15-25 FPS 1080 Fallout 3 - 60+ FPS 1080 All we tested in Ultra High Seetings, didn't tweak anything. Quesiton is what settings or anything we can do to get consistent 60+ FPS? on games like which settings to turn off or reduce. or is it my CPU that is bottlenecking my GPU?? would OCing the CPU help? we would need to get a new MOBO for that though. Which is fine cause it's not that expensive for FM2+ MOBO I had the choice to get this R9 290 or an R9 380 (asked the forum and 290 dominted and waaay cheaper) reason for asking is so we can save money for a good CPU and MOBO Thanks for any comments and suggestion!!
