Hi, I've been researching for the last few days about building a NAS. My primary questions are as follows; I am going to build it based on uses, but can't find an OS for my uses and needs, and can someone help me figure out which OS I should use? The other question is I would either love a case that tells me if a drive is going bad or if nothing exists....can I configure it to text/email/or audibly screams at me if a drive goes bad? Other info that is needed, I'm not afraid of research, but can get overwhelmed with conflicting info. I am somewhere between novice to amateur Linux user. Uses for NAS are media streaming of DVDs and Blu-ray, picture storage, backup of important files (preferably done with a scheduler), and we are going to have a surveillance system with 3-5 cameras. HDDs will be added in clumps as expendable capital becomes available.

I'm looking to replace my Klipsch pro media speakers due to the snap popping noises and all orther sorts of issues with the product. I currently have a Creative Labs AE-5 sound card, I'm happy with the card since it made the speakers sing better than the motherboard's onboard. I'm looking at either a JBL LSR 305 mkii or go with the audio engine A2+ and sub. I had used a Bose Companion 20 in the past, and I didn't like the shallow low end that it produced. I currently had gotten a Logitech G560 from BB from the warranty on the Klipsch. Personally, I think it's a complete let down. It's muffled way to much at low volumes and when it is clear, it has to be at a higher volume. On top of that, I'm having way too many software issues to make owning it worth while. Also, can recommendations would be great. I'm looking to spend about $300 tops for now on a good pair of speakers, then add a sub later on down the line possibly. I plan on using my sound blaster card since I'm not a big fan of DACs.

https://money.cnn.com/2018/07/27/media/disney-fox-merger-vote/index.html I know this topic has been broached before, but now its as good as a done deal. Shareholders approve the purchase of 20th century Fox by disney and has been largely government approved. Despite the throngs of comments saying that the purchase is good to get the X-men into the MCU, it is a very far cry from being worth 71.3 BILLION M*THER FRACKING DOLLARS. The only reason that this sort of money comes out to play is to corner markets, so get ready for gouging and realityTV quality programming. Do recall that this bid jumped up around 20 billion over night as a huge beeotch slap to anyone(comcast) thinking they were going to get in Disneys way in acquiring Fox. To say that Disney owns everything is not as far from the truth as I'd like to believe. If we look at how disney/LucasFilms abused their power against theaters with the release of The Last Jedi, and we've a very clear image of what is in store for everyone going forward at the other end of disneys stick. Normally production houses would split theater earnings 50/50 or so, not so with disney/Lucas... source:https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2017/11/02/star-wars-the-last-jedi-why-disney-is-pressuring-u-s-theaters/#5327c3ec604c Bend over for the man. Supplementary info in video/audio format. (somewhat liberal use of language, NSFW, but not that bad) This does offer an interesting issue for NetFlix and amazon, they might be the only open shot out there since SONY sure as hell ain't going to manage to save themselves.

Hey all, so I have an up-to-date Plex server with Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Gen2 installed. It has 72GB of RAM (~50GB of which is being used as a cache system with PrimoCache), 2x Xeon E5620 CPU's, and a bridged NIC (I have tried with and without bridged NIC's and the bridged one has the least buffering time). The server is DMZ'ed from the outside and the ports are forwarded. Firewall is allowing Plex and all its services to send and receive data on the server and the client. This issue happens across multiple clients and hasn't happened before on previous Plex servers on my network. Transcoding is set to "Prefer higher speed encoding". No GPU acceleration is being used due to no GPU being installed. If this is an issue with Windows, I will gladly switch to a Linux distro but I just want to make sure that it isn't something I have done to mess with the configuration before I make the switch to the Linux distro and have the same issues. Any help is much appreciated.

I am sure you have all seen the recent Intel SSD news, 32TB Ruler SSD's. That right there got me thinking about Petabyte Project, as with these ruler SSD's you can have a 32 slot machine to easily make a petabyte system (not including the RAID configuration, purely RAW), and would be much quicker for the type of workflow that LTT has shown off over the years. Oh, did I not mention that these 32 slot machines are 1U? Yeah, think about the storage per litre of that bad boy. Though it might be costly (honestly, corporate accounting from Linus Media Group must still be kicking themselves from the RED situation), future proofing would be easily done. My current system for a NAS is 72 Samsung SSD 860 PRO 4TB's in Synology hardware but I am genuinely thinking of upgrading to a SuperStorage SSG-136R-NR32JBF or something similar from Supermicro and just slapping 32 x 32TB once they actually come out. Guys, please leave your comments and thoughts on this, also if you are reading this Linus, #linusdroptips.

Hi all. I need a recommendation to set up a media center in a conference/showroom. We bought a 55" Hisense Smart TV, that has a DNLA connection but since most of us in the office only had Macs and IOS devices we couldn't get to connect anything over wireless since, for as far as I know apple devices support only their own wireless protocols to wirelessly share data. But that's not the point, I cannot be dependent on someone's tablet or phone to show stuff. This TV needs to show videos and photos in loop, making different mixed video and photo playlists for different occasions, for clients visiting or for an industrial fair, with the functionality of showing PDF depliant and Power Point presentation too with a simple media center UI instead of having a PC with windows and all the hassle of maintaining updates, licenses, antivirus and stuff. It would be convenient for the media center to have network functionality too to remotely update its contents without having to transfer stuff over USB sticks again. Can you recommend me a could of good choices please?

So I'm in the process of cabling my house and was trying to figure out how I wanted to lay out all the devices in my media panel. It's a little cramped but its going to have to do and theres more that has to go in. I'll include some pictures, the red square is where the coax splitter would most likely go. Basically give me your opinion on which layout would work best or suggest a new layout. Thank!

Hey everyone, New to the forum but not to building PCs. I'm looking at getting the parts necessary to build a central server for our small media business for members to work from and store projects. So far I have zero experience in building servers and therefore don't exactly know what is fully required for our current workload so pretty much guessing. Currently we actually use several home-style NAS drives which is not ideal at all! We have a small video department that will be increasingly using 4K footage and ideally we'd like everyone to be able to work from and store files on this server. At the most there will be about 10x voice-over editors (very light audio workload using Reaper along with streaming motion capture footage from the server when necessary), 4 video editors/vfx, 3 sound designers (relatively light audio load unless working with a video) and 2 composers (mainly using locally stored sample libraries on ssds but putting project files on server). It'd be cool to have at least a few people working at 10GbE speeds. I'm basically looking for advice to see if I've gone either way overboard or not overboard enough, or that this plan will even work at all?! Budget would be hopefully under £7000 Here's what I'm looking at: Case https://www.servercase.co.uk/shop/server-cases/rackmount/4u-chassis/4u-server-case-w-24x-35-hot-swappable-satasas-drive-bays-6gbs-minisas-550m-deep-sc-4324s/ Motherboard https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-ws-c621e-sage-intel-c621-s-3647-x2-ddr4-sata3-quad-u2-m2-4-way-sli-crossfire-dual-gbe-usb-31-ap?v=c 2x Processors (do I need more powerful?) https://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-xeon-silver-4108-s3647-skylake-sp-8-cores-16-threads-18ghz-21ghz-turbo-11mb-cache-85w-retail?v=c 2x CPU coolers https://www.scan.co.uk/products/dynatron-b13-intel-s3647-square-ilm-al-cu-4x-direct-contact-heatpipes-60mm-dual-ball-bearing-fan-205?v=c 128gb RAM (need more? less? Any advice or help would be super appreciated as this would be my first step away from gaming stuff to servers and networking Cheers Harry

Heylo once again LTTians. So I've wanted to setup a private media server/htpc with Plex and use it to double up as a game server occasionally, mostly for minecraft and some other games. But primarily this would be a Plex media server. I would be streaming to other devices including my phone and hence would need to transcode sometime and therefore I need to make sure I've got enough processing power for 3-4 devices simultaneously. For this purpose, I'm looking at picking up a second hand machine, maybe an office pc with an i7 (the GPU can wait, I'm in no hurry for the gaming server). Or second hand computers with xeon processors. I just need some tips and advice as I have never worked with xeon processors before and not sure what to expect. This is one of the machines I found: 1.Dell Precision T3500 Xeon Hex 2.66GHz / 80GB SSD / 16GB / Radeon HD6850Intel Xeon Hex Core (twelve threads w/hyperthreading) X5650 processor16GB 10600E RAM (DDR3) - CAD $350 and this is the second option: HP Z600 Dual HEX Xeon 2.80Ghz / 48GB RAM / 160GB SSD / QuadroTwo Intel Xeon HEX core Processor 2.80GHz X5660 (12 cores with hyperthreading - 24 logical processors)Nvidia Quadro 600 (or Quadro 2000) / + $50 for a Quadro 400048GB RAM 8500R ECC DDR3 CAD $600 and lastly this is the third: HP Z620 fully refurbished workstations available in stock. Processor: 2 x E5-2609 Xeon Processors (4 Cores x 2 = 8 Cores = 16 Threads). Memory: 24Gb RAM. Hard Drive: 1 x 128Gb SSD Solid State Hard Drive + 1 x 1000Gb 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive. RAID: Yes. Graphics Card: 2Gb nVidia Quadro 4000 Graphics Card. Network: 1 x Gigabit Ethernet Card. CAD $900 eitherway, I need a cpu with a cpu mark of over atleast 8000. But the killer for me is that I have no idea how these processors and ram perform and what the differences are from regular consumer grade processors and what I need to watch out for. Eitherway, what do you guys recommend? p.s. ther server won't be running 24/7 it's just for when I need it. Please help

Hello good fellas, I don't know if I am in the right forum or if I can find any help but I'm looking for the following and hope some of you can give some advice because it is a long time ago where I was up to date for tablets etc. (Is there just the option between an iPad and Galaxy Tab nowadays?) Basically im looking for a new Media watching device. Currently I still live on a Nexus 7 2013 which is getting a super old and small. It just broke and I can just charge it via the wireless pad.... I basically just use it to watch all kind of media, the usuall streaming services (netflix, amazon, youtube) (because I don't use a TV in my bedroom ) and use it for news reading and some games. This needs a replacment very soon and I hope someone of you can give good advice for tablets nowadays. I kinda wanna stick to android just because.... In my head I also toy around to upgrade to an Yoga,XPS,Spectre kind of convertible (#Chrome- Pixelbook worth it?) to increase my usage of such device and maybe take it as a working device too. The range is quite wide as you can see. Basically from a few hundred bugs tablet up to an 1,5k convertible. thanks in advance and kind regards

Today I received a retired dell poweredge t610 server from a business, with an expired warranty. I'm trying to think of what to do with it. I'd like to make a full network server with network storage and media streaming as well as caching updates for work. But I'm not sure where to start. Any ideas of what else I can use it for being it's a little over kill for me at the moment?

So I've slowly been working my media collection of DVD's and Blu-Rays into Plex. I came to Stargate Universe however and realized I don't have season 2 on bluray. So I scoured the internet looking for a copy. Come to find out they don't exist, I got my hopes up when I found I UK version on Amazon only to find out it was cancelled as well. So my question is how can I get my hands on a 1080p copy? Can I buy it on DIGITALLY on Amazon, Play Store, or iTunes and put it into my Plex library or is my only option to buy the DVD set and try upscaling or something of the like? I have the first season on bluray and it would kill me to ruin the first half. If it was only ALL on DVD it wouldn't be as painful. HELP

I am looking for a home media system that will allow users to watch and record live tv (via an Ariel connection) on any tv. e.g allow a program to be recorded on one tv and watched back on another tv with a full easy to use tv guide if possible like on Sky HD for example that shows the channels and the times of each program. I am currently using plex server on my windows 2012 server with Plex clients on the new amazon fire tv sticks but have been having issues with the video pausing randomly or it sometimes just not wanting to tune the channel with cat 6 networking and wired ethernet adapters for the amazon tv sticks. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Long story short, I'm part of both a photography and media group in my university and I've been contemplating a gimbal for a long time (a smartphone gimbal as my phone records higher resolution video than my a6000, even though the latter should be better at handling light) But the initial $299 price of DJI's Osmo Mobile 1 was a bit of a turn off. However, the new Osmo's price tag makes it compelling. Here's the dillema. It won't arrive until March and over here, it'll be closer to the $159 mark. Meanwhile, I've been looking at the Zhiyun Smooth Q, another gimbal similar to the Osmo 2 but at $100 (and less with coupons). What would you suggest?

So..... I was trying to use one of the new features of Plex to record live TV on my UNRAID server. I installed this device (i reference device a lot meaning this) which i got ages ago in to my server. Some more photos of the server can be seen here. Anyway when i first installed it, i did it with the server running as its only USB, so what could go wrong. Any way i pulled out my phone to check that the server had detected it in some way. And the first thing i notice is that the parody drive has gone missing. i this point i though that i may have nudged the server and one of the Sata connectors had come out. So i powered down the server, reinstalled the the drive and rebooted The server booted, to the point of the drives spinning up, but the web UI had not loaded I brought a monitor to the server and attached it this enabled me to restart the web UI Upon accessing the interface, the top Said "USB failure" and the key for the OS was no longer valid. I rebooted again, this time the server would load the OS. (Device still installed) The USB never appeared in the boot menu, even though it was plugged in After another restart the USB appeared in the boot menu (Device still installed) So i attempted to boot from it, but it just got stuck on BZroot, when the server is loading At this point i installed a new copy of unraid on that USB to no avail. I tried a new USB to no avail i even put in a new USB card (with fresh install) so that the boot media was not on the same set usbs. this was to no avail. So at this point i removed that device, and it still would not boot. I had to do a fresh install of UNRAID before it would boot. What possibly could be causing this device to interfere with the boot media so much? This device appears to work correctly on my windows 10 PC, and does not cause any of these strange symptoms
