Hello, So I want to start working on getting my CompTIA A+ certification. I work full time and I'm not interested in reducing my hours to go to a class to get it (Also because there isn't really any short term classes in the area I live in). I already have a natural background in the field because of my interests as well as some experience building my own PCs. So my question is, what online/e-learning website or program do you recommend to prep for the exam? Right now I'm just looking at the course offered through CompTIA's marketplace "CompTIA A+: Complete eLearning Courseware" but I was wondering if anyone has better suggestions.

As someone in the IT world.... this was hilarious. Except I do go to the gym. And printers do always work. Okay, no they don't - Enjoy!

Hi guys , I hope you will help me to choose the best solution of building a new pc. Last 6 years i was living in laptops "world" and now I am migrating to dekstop pc domain, so I am newbie here. My expectations and primary tasks of my future computer: - I am an IT specialist for networking , IT security and etc, so it will be used for network simulations , OS virtualization and lot of many other tasks and intensive calculations and visualizations (at the same time/moment) - multitasking. - Video editing, recording (not for gaming, but mostly for live lectures and etc.) - Gaming : I am not a really big gamer .. but ... I love World of Warcraft , so it would be really nice to play it with no problems on Ultra settings with my 24 inch Full HD monitor (@60Hz) . New expansion is almost here, so I want to be ready for it with smile on my face )) (other games I play ... they work fine with "stone age" computers). Basically that's all. I don't want to exceed my 500-700 British pounds budget, so price/performance ratio is very high priority for me. There is a link with most of hardware prices here in UK https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/ (I think most of you know this page). Basically I think that the AMD FX - 8350 would fit for this really good, but everything else? Thanks for you in advance. Mindaugas (p.s sorry for my "broken English")

So, I recently built my first computer, and it runs beautifully. Except for one problem. Whenever I attach the side panel on the case (The one with all my beautiful wiring), the entire computer shuts off. It runs perfectly without the side panel, however the second I attach it "BOOOOM!". Everything shuts off. I really don;t know why it does this, and any help here would be appreciated. I can take photos/videos of it happening if people want to see, etc. My build is as follows: PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Fst7yc Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Fst7yc/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor (Purchased For $45.00) GPU: XFX Double D FX797ATDJC Radeon HD 7970 3GB (Purchased For $105.00)Motherboard: MSI Z87M GAMING Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (Purchased For $110.00) Memory: Corsair XMS 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (Purchased For $50.00) Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Purchased For $85.00) Case: Nanoxia Deep Silence 1 ATX Mid Tower Case (Purchased For $120.00) Power Supply: Corsair Professional Gold 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (Purchased For $75.00) Monitor: Asus PB278Q 27.0" Monitor (Purchased For $460.00) Case Fan: Noctua NF-P14 FLX 65.0 CFM 140mm Fan (Purchased For $10.00) Case Fan: Noctua NF-P14 FLX 65.0 CFM 140mm Fan (Purchased For $10.00) Total: $1070.00 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-11-06 00:08 EST-0500

My college program is co-op endorsed, and I have my first co-op term coming up in the winter. Today, our first round of job postings went live, so I began the process of applying.I've never technically had a paid job before, like, one where I'm earning either student, or minimum wage AND can be fired. That being said, a few years back, my mother's boyfriend ran a lawn and garden shop and I helped out as a shop assistant and got paid $5/hr (technically not legal if I were listed as an employee, but closest I've had to a legit job). That being said, I've done paid computer repairs, upgrades, servicing, and builds over the past 6 years, however, I wouldn't consider it a job as ut was never consistent, and I'd go weeks without anything popping up for me to do. So, on to my question, do any of y'all have any tips for new employee's/co-op students and going through the interview process? After applying to 3 positions today, I'm incredibly nervous. Like I said, I've never had a legit job, so I've never had an interview before, nor the stress of working somewhere where I could get fired. Normally getting fired is bad enough, but since this is a co-op program, it's even worse since getting fired would mean we lose our co-op endorsement as well... Just a little extra info: Applied positions are all service desk with one at a Ellis Don (a construction firm), one at Digital Extremes (a video game company in London responsible in part for Bioshock, Homefront, Darkness 2 and Warframe), and the last one being at my college. Program is Computer Systems Technology which teaches us how to design, install, configure, and maintain computer systems (both PC, and server), as well as design, implement, and maintain basic networks at the CCNA level, and install, configure, maintain and administrate Windows, and UNIX OS I've completed training for all of CCNA Route and Switch, and CompTIA A+, but do not hold the certifications at the moment Any help you guys could swing my way would be greatly appreciated! *NOTE* please list your credentials, aka, where you have worked, or currently work, so I know you aren't talking out of your ass as someone who has never had a job. I don't want bad advice that screws me out of a co-op work term, and thus my co-op endorsement.

I was just wondering tonight, what would you use your tablet for ? I mean, I don't have one right now, and I'm not planning on buying one, because I find this pretty much useless :/ I kind of see why it is useful for some persons that are constantly travelling, but for others, and at home ? Just explain it to me, I don't get it

Of course we are all on the ongoing quest to find the best developer ever, I want/need/like YOUR opinion. Who has revolutionized gaming the most from your perspective. You may submit a person of a entire company, what ever you like. Valve, Rockstar or even EA Have your pick. My favorite person in gaming is Gabe Newell, I mean. just look at his glorious beard His inability to count to 3 has not stopped him from creating one of the most glorious companies on this planet, Valve. Is it Half-Life 2 ¾ that seals the deal? not for me, i just love thinking with portals.. and killing zombies. (They should develop a bridge between portal and left4dead really) And anyone who argues Steam is not the best thing out there, ask youself. Is Origin, Desura of Uplay really that good?

This is kind of late, I guess, but Linux Foundation decided to team up with edX, a non-profit online education site founded by Harvard and MIT, to allow easier entries into Linux courses. In this case, an introduction course that usually costs $2400, will be free over the summer. There is no limit or prerequisites to enroll and you can even "audit" and keep the course's materials, tests, and have access to the forums associated with the course. Otherwise, you can complete the course and get a completion certificate for free unlike some classes on edX. Source: Anandtech, "$2,400 'Introduction to Linux' course will be free and online this summer". And here's edX's page on this: "LinuxFoundationX: LFS101x: Introduction to Linux | edX". Linux is everywhere and it's pretty much the bare-bones or foundation of many operating systems like Android's OSs, Valve's SteamOS, and Mozilla's Firefox OS. The other thing is that Linux tends to be the tinkerer's OS as it requires you to actually explore it unlike Windows or iOS which are made convenient for users, but for some they are too restricted. So, if Linux is so open-source and kind of directed to a DIY mentality, then take a class? Ignoring the fact it's free, some people want guidance or want to learn it from a school environment. Personally, I'd like some guidance before messing with anything. I could have learned about automobiles the old-fashioned way, but there was a class in high school and those are usually free, so I took it. Even though it was an introduction class, there was a ton to learn. So, I'll probably sign-up even if I don't go into computer sciences and it'll be handy to have some knowledge of Linux. Who knows, I might end up being the guy who makes a revolutionary, Linux-powered toaster. Edit: Damn it! Someone beat me to it. There's an actual toaster-PC. It runs on Unix-like OS called NetBSD which is sort of close enough to a Linux-powered toaster. "NetBSD Toaster with the TS-7200 ARM SBC".

Our IP range is in the 10.0.0.0 area. IP Addresses like 239.255.255.250 & 239.255.100.100 along with 224.1.1.1 & 224.0.0.2 (and many other 224.X.X.X) IPs keep showing up in my DNS records on my computer. When I open a command prompt and type arp -a (lists my DNS cache IIRC), these IPs show up. None respond when I ping them except for 239.255.100.100 but it responds from one of our 10.0.0.X IPs which is a Color Printer. Just thought I'd ask here to see if anyone knows what these are about as we have no devices with these IPs.

I am about to go into high school and would like to know if there are any good resources or methods of learning about computers. I will probably go to college for a computer-related degree once I graduate high school. I would like to know more about what kind of jobs there are involving computers, and what each job consists of. The point of this post is to help me grow my knowledge about computers and to help me find out how I can use my interests to find a job in the real world. Thanks to anyone who helps.

Hi guys, So I just got out of a 2.5 hour IT meeting (longest we have ever had) and I thought I would post the highlights, there are a few. Quite a bit funny imo. Note: Our IT is structured as such, IT Manager (AKA The Captain, due to being in the military and owning a captain cap similar to what is in the show Gilligan's Island) Head Code Monkey (AKA Chancey, pronounced the same as the Pokemon but with Chon rather than Chan. A combination of his first and last name) Operations Supervisor (AKA Aloysius, his "royal" name, given because his last name is King, so he is the IT King. Aloysius is pronounced Al-oo-ish-us) Assistant Operations Supervisor (No nickname, sadly) Code Monkeys (affectionately called such, one is Karl and the other Binks, a nickname given to him based on his last name and his back and forth with Aloysius.) Art guy (No real nickname, but he is extremely color blind) Operation "people" (No real nickname beyond being shortened to "Ops") Intern (Me) I swear we should have a sitcom. But whatever, onto the highlights: Hope you guys enjoyed them. We have quite the crew. 2 females even. We are above the IT gender-ratio average by a whole 10%. Hopefully I will have more. P.S. A bonus, a favorite of the Captains: "I always ask the people at the local Mexican restaurant if their Niño meals use real niño. They never know what to say."

A couple of guys in Germany have started an indiegogo for creating every network technicians wet dream. This is great for guys wanting to troubleshoot links and test cables. Part of me wishes that It had more than 1 ethernet port.. As linus would say, ~ "UNT ONLY 1 OPTION" hehe. I bought one even though I have a z10. If it doesn't work out then so be it.
