I've been troubleshooting tons of problems big and small with my computer lately and I noticed something interesting. I've been using reliability history to track down various errors and MSI command center has been spitting out errors all over the place ever since I updated my z97 pc mate bios to the newest update. Command center is absolutely updated to the most current version as well. So, yea if you recently updated the bios on a z97 pc mate, check out your reliability history and if you're getting MSIDDRservice errors all of the place, that's command center. Just uninstall it and use your bios for tweaking instead. All of those errors have stopped. msi z97 pc mate i7 4790k asus strix gtx 1080 oc edition windows 10 64 bit

Hi, So, I finally decided to test to see how well this chip overclocks but I think I got bad luck with this chip. I'm getting 77 degrees max with only a 1.1 core voltage setting and only a multiplier of 42 This is on an MSI z97 pc mate board with an i7 4790k cooled with a corsair h60. I mean, the h60 certainly isn't the best radiator but I expected to get to at least 1.25 before seeing temperatures like that. It gets to 1.25 on idle and stock settings (no overclock) just fine but I can see the chip thermal throttles down to 3.6 ghz on stock settings with prime95 running.. I've turned turbo off, I changed it to fixed instead of dynamic and only changed the vcore and multiplier.. nothing else. Am I doing something wrong, or did I just get bad luck with my chip? Is this really normal with an h60 at 1.1v? (the screenshot is of the prime95 test with the overclock max temp results not of the test without the OC)

Hi guys I just upgraded my CPU to the i7 4790k and my PSU isn't sufficient for the overclock. I can't buy the PSU yet coz im running low. My question is: NOT overclocking immediately will get me worst results than overclocking right away the moment I installed my CPU? Coz I thought like the CPU is still fresh and maybe that is the best time to overclock than after a few weeks or months the CPU is not fresh anymore, like food. I dunno just some crazy thoughts. Anyone please guide me . . . thank you so much

The choice of GPU was simple enough, what the best GPU that isnt crazy overkill for 1440p 75Hz? a GTX 1080! i might end up getting a Vega card if they have any compelling options though but the plan is to get a 1080, watercool it and be happy with the insaine overkill machine i have just to play some esports titles, watch youtube and chat on discord! The color scheme will be Yellow/White/Black with yellow pastel coolant, clear tubeing, plexi blocks and some white accents in a Fractal Design C! also this will probably be the first time i do any proper cable management beyond stuffing it all behind the motherboard tray Where Im At Right NOW: I have all the computer components exept for the GTX 1080, and just got the 240mm rad. The 360 rad, pump and reservoir have all been purchased too and should arive soon. the case will probably be bought in about a month. the build should begin around then so its going to be a bit of a wait. i dont know wether i will be buying new or used GPU and CPU blocks either but seeing the current situation its looking like new blocks. the money to fund all this should be in my pockets in two weeks and then if thats not enough the rest will be in in august the Toaster Project might get some priority but i doubt it, it will probably be relying on the august money instead because i want this done ASAP @TheRandomness @Mr.Meerkat @Revan654 thanks for pushing me over the edge to actiually do this *edit* also the indent feature is a bitch so deal with it Thanks for reading this and i hope you will enjoy this build! here is what a northern bumblebee looks like!

I absolutely love the processor that I currently have in my main build, which is the Intel Core i7 4790k. A quad-core processor overclocked at a maximum of 4.8GHz (I've only reached 4.5 myself), this is a chip that I don't want to replace for quite some time. However, I've been researching the Skylake/Kaby Lake chipsets, and grew increasingly worried that I'll be left behind with the upcoming tech. After knowing that 4th generation Intel processors have LGA 1150 sockets, they can only accept DDR3 RAM, further limiting upgradability. Is there a potential bottleneck that could appear later if I just continue to upgrade GPUs over time, or am I generally safe for the next 2 or so years? I'd appreciate any feedback to ease my mind a bit

Hey guys, For an i7 4790k, I know it has a total of 16 pcie lanes. That means you can run two GPU's at x8, totaling up to x16 which uses all of the pcie lanes. However, lets say I wanted to add a pcie 1x sound card in addition to the two graphics cards. Would this screw up my configuration of the two gpus, making the second one run at x4(which I really dont want to happen), and the sound card run at x4? Or does the motherboard chipset add extra lanes for the sound card? Im completely confused. TLDR: Does the motherboard have additional pcie lanes that can assist a cpu with only 16 lanes running two gpus at x8, giving it more lanes for extra expansions like sound cards etc. Any replies are greatly appreciated!

I'm considering buying a 1440p 144hz screen so I decided to try GTA V at 1440p 144hz to see how my PC would do at maintaing 144fps at 1440p. Even after lowering a lot of settings the game still runs at a below exceptional framerate considering my specs. Specs : i7 4790k OC @ 4.5ghz Cosair 16GB DDR3 @ 1600mhz GTX 1080 FE OC MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard Game Settings : DirectX 11 Fullscreen 2560 x 1440 FXXA On MSAA Off VSync Off Population Desnity: MAX Population Variety: MAX Distance Scaling: MAX Texture Quality: Very High Shader Quality: High Shadow Quality: Very High Reflection Quality: Very High Reflection MSAA: Off Water Quality: High Particles Quality: High Grass Quality: High Soft Shadows: Softer Post FX: Very High Motion Blur Strength: MAX In-Game Depth Of Field Effects: On Anisotrpic Filtering: x16 Ambient Occlusion: High Tessellation: High In this screenshot I'm getting around 70fps at 1440p with GPU Utilization below 50% (and CPU utilization at 66% indicating there is not a CPU bottleneck.) Sometimes the GPU utilization will peak at ~90% and the game will boost to around 110-130fps which is much closer to the fps target im looking for as seen here I can also guarantee this is a software problem and not a temperature issue as the game runs at 60-80fps at these same settings at 4K while pinned at 99% GPU utilization with no dips even when the temperature is hitting max. (Incase your wandering about the fan speed being pinned at 100%, I locked in their to see if there was a temperature problem earlier, load temps typically ~86c when at 100% usage).

i7 4790k working worse than an i5 6600k?
Ricky_SHTK posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
So i just downloaded cpu-z and ran a benchmark... and the results i think they were not good. I compared to other users with same cpu and they are getting much more of score... As you can see, in the image, the reference is 100 % , so how it should be. Mine is only at 57%... help! -
So when I was using my gtx 560 ti, it would crash and shutdown my whole computer if i played any game on high settings. Even on CS:GO i had to change the quality and other settings to low/medium. I thought it was the graphics card so i upgraded from a GTX 560 ti to GTX 1070. But even with this new card it will still crash and shutdown my desktop if i played any game on high. Now i know this isn't the GPU because its brand new. So is the Processor which is an i7 4790k. If i use the computer to watch YouTube and such, it won't shut down randomly. It'll work perfectly fine. It only shuts down when i play a game on high settings. I was planning on buying a new PSU but I don't know which to buy and I am low on cash so i need to buy a good power supply for as little as possible. My Specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K 4.00GHz Motherboard: ASUS Z97-AR Memory: DDR3 4x4GBs GPU: Geforce GTX 1070 PSU: Kingwin ABT-750mm 750watts This is my first post ever and not to mention i don't know how to correctly give my specs to others. Sorry.

Hello people, I have a question that I was hoping someone here could answer. I am currently playing GTA 5 at 1080p ultra settings (no advanced graphics) and 2x MSAA. I am getting around 70-120 fps in the game, but I noticed that when I'm in the 70-80 fps area, that my GPU and CPU are only being pushed to around 60%. My GPU is a gtx 1080 FE at stock clock, and my CPU is an i7 4790 OC @ 4.8 ghz. If anyone has any info It will be much appreciated.

I have just upgraded to an rtx 2060 as of yesterday and i downloaded fortnite just to see the improvement in fps over my previous gtx 1050 which got around 60-100 fps with drops. There was a little bit better performance around 140-150 fps on pretty much all low settings, but there were frequent drops below even 60 fps whenever like anything happened. i also tested maple story 2 which is a game with horrendous optimisation and my fps only went up a little bit too, like 10 fps more, from 20 -> 30. Im wondering what the issue is with my pc, my specs are: rtx 2060, i7 4790k, 8gb ddr3 ram (1866Mh) ssd for booting and both of the mentioned games and hdd for stuff. I am sorry this is so vague i just really feel there should be better performance, is there maybe some sort of bottlenecking going on? any help appreciated.

Hi, I've been rocking a gaming pc with the following configuration since the last 5 years. i7 4790k 8x2 corsair vengeance ram Nvidia gtx 760 by asus Gigabyte z97d3hp motherboard 120 gb ssd coupled with a 2 tb hdd (both WD green). Most of the games that I've been playing on this machine have been in working fine until a few weeks ago. All games were played at 1080p. Just cause 3 - low to med settings, 40-50 fps. Gta 5 - med to high settings - 55-60fps. Injustice 2 - low to med settings - 60fps. Rise of tomb raider - med preset - 60fps. Assassin's creed odyssey - low to med - 30-45fps. In the last couple of weeks I've noticed some serious amount of lag with all these games JC3 - low settings 18-28 fps (unplayable) Injustice 2 - low to med 30-40 fps Rise of tomb raider - med preset - 24-30 fps AC Odyssey - lowest settings 7-26fps (unplayable) Gta 5 - unable to connect to servers Both Nvidia and the Intel HD drivers are upto date and and I have a 40mbps internet connection (rockstar server). Arethere any options to fix this issue other than giving windows 10 and all the games a fresh install as I already did that back in December.

Firstly I'd like to say hello to everyone this is my first time writing here so thank you for hearing me out ahead of time. I'm currently running a i7 4790k Stock at 4.0Ghz Paired with a 1070 ti, and 32GBs of Kingston DDR3 Ram and a z97-a motherboard and I've been noticing random hitching in games like a slight freeze followed by a loss of anywhere from 5-15fps (sometimes even 20+ but rarely) this is after maintaining up to that point a near constant 60-144 (based on whatever game I'm playing at the time). I had been looking around at other people who have had the same issues such as staying above 60fps in Fortnite with Ultra settings in 1080p with my setup or same with Hitman 1/2 and some came to the conclusion that it might be a memory issue and upon looking into it and removing 2 of my 8GB Kingston DDR3 games it gave me a much much more stable feeling without the hitching however I lost a good chunk of FPS anywhere from 15-30 on some games but even in the lower 40s for games like Hitman it sill had less hitching and next to zero freezes I wasn't sure if this was something I should expect so I booted up CPU-Z to get a look at what was going on and turns out with two sticks of Ram it was only running in Single channel so I figured okay slot 1 and 2 must not be the correct one so I removed one slot from 2 and put in three and again it felt smoother but I had even more of a loss of framerate and upon inspection I found out it was because I was only running 1 8GB Stick and not the second one and yet again it was also in Single Channel mode (before you ask I tried slot 3 & 4 and slot 2 and 4 and neither worked at all the computer wouldn't even post with them setup like that.) So now here I am dealing with the hitching/freezing and low-ish FPS again with all 4 sticks back inside the computer and with that being the only way to set it to dual channel the freezing/hitching happens at any game settings so I'll see it on medium/high/Ultra and even low settings but it'll be less frequent while still happening. Please someone help me figure out what could be the issue I've always dealt with this since this computer was built originally about 5 years ago and since then I've swapped out harddrives, GPUs and fans originally thinking those might be the issue and to an extent it did help lessen it but the issue still remains and the gameplay hitching makes a 100-200fps game feel less stable than just playing something on console and its really getting quite annoying. Below are some examples of the dual 4 stick and the single 2 stick channel setup and how the games felt CSGO: Random half second hitches and overall less responsive with nearly double the FPS (Dual) CSGO: Smooth as butter no hitching or massive framerate dips. (Single) Fortnite: 100-144 fps feeling sluggish and when attempting to fast build at the most un-opportune time I'd get the random freezing or huge framerate drops (Dual) Fortnite: 80-130 fps feeling far more stable with less screen tearing and a greater response time even when dropping into the low 50s near end game with lots of build on screen. (Single) Hitman: Unable to maintain 60fps in high or ultra settings with V-sync off and even with it on still dropping to lower 50s and sometimes 40s (Dual) Hitman: Still unable to maintain 60fps even dropping to the 40s at times but the screen tearing without v-sync is minimal and the gameplay feels more fluid with less hitching and freezing (Single) Battlefield V: Drops to lower 50s with Ultra settings and for some random reason into the higher 40s in High settings with hitching when loading in and when in huge battles (Dual) Battlefield V: Drops again into the 40s but this time on Ultra settings and it felt better than it did with High settings in the Dual Channel 4 Stick setup I hope that the info I've provided can help us finally diagnose this issue if you need anymore please do tell me what and how to come back getting you this info and I'll do my best to do so. Thank you all again so very much in advance.

i have a i7 4790k overclocked to 4.48ghz. Why when i run cinebench it says my processor speed is only 4.08ghz? the stock speed of this cpu is 4.00ghz so its not just telling me the stock speed i assume. The stock turbo speed is 4.4ghz. its not even using the stock turbo speed. i would obviously get a better score if cinebench would use the full 4.48ghz.. Whats goin on here?

Hey guys, I just bought a i7 4790k and want to run it on my MSI Z87 G43. To make this possible I have to update my BIOS and ME. (Update: BIOS and ME update was successfull, but now I get Windows Error Messages at booting) I didn't know that I also have to update ME, so I only updated BIOS to the latest version 1.11 (aka 1B) via Live Updater not with USB drive...my bad. But after this update my system doesn't boot. I get stuck at MSI loading screen or get Windows 'stop code' error messages. So I know want to update BIOS and ME together and placed the 3 files in my USB drive root folder but when I'm in the Click BIOS 4 and go to M-Flash I get the following error message.. Please help me in this issue. Thanks in advance!

Hey guys, I heard that some boxed cooler push the cpu too much and cause problems at the cpu / socket contacts. Can you tell me if I can use the old fan for the new cpu? Thanks in advance

Hey guys, I've updated my mainboard to the newest version and put on my new CPU. Unfortunately my system does not boot. I can go into BIOS and see that my CPU is detected correctly, after that I get errors only. Eirher the MSI loading screen gets stuck, or I get blackscreen after the loading screen or I get a windows error message. I am not sure what the problem is. I thought the black screen is because I have no gpu and use onboard only but why the stuck loading screen and error message?? Please help me guys!

Hello guys, I'm new here and I was hoping to get some advice here. I'm planning to buy a 3090 RTX ROG Strix Gaming since I heard this will go out in limited stocks. So I decided that I will buy this gpu first and then after 6 months, I will upgrade for other hardware components such as cpu, motherboard etc. So here is my current specs: i7 4790k Maximus hero vii 32GB ram 1200 watts psu xg279q monitor at 1440p resolution with 170hz Will I be able to use 3090 rtx while waiting to earn some more money to buy my other upgrades?

Hi all, I am Ocing my i7 4790k and I just want to make sure im doing things right, and everything seems safe. I've added the stress test results I got, would you say its safe to push it a little more? had it running for 20 mins and no crashes or anything. I still had msi afterburning, Microsoft edge with 9 tabs open, battlenet, steam and hw monitor all running as well while the test was going.

Hello Guys, I wanna upgrade my 8 ddr3 1600mhz ram to 16gb 2400mhz ddr3 ram. (https://www.amazon.com/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-240-Pin-Desktop-F3-2400C11D-16GXM/dp/B00DH9M3C4) My cpu is a i7 4790k and i know that every ram speed above 1600mhz is an OC. And the ddr3 2400mhz ram runs at 1,65v, while for the i7 4790k it's better if it's not higher than 1,5v it states on their website. Will this be a problem for my pc? Will i need any special cooling? (Motherboard is msi z97 gaming 3 if that matters) Thanks, MoblietzS

Hi all, Yesterday evening I was gaming and suddenly my pc slowed down real quick and I couldnt perform any actions anymore so I decided to restart my pc. During the restart after the gigabyte logo the pc shutdown itself so I couldnt get past the gigabyte logo screen. After the shutdown i went into the bios I saw my cpu clocking itself to 0.2ghz and it had a temp of 91c. I have no clue what the cause of all this is. Have been using this machine for 8 months without any hitch. Als the fans on the radiator are spinning and in the bios it shows 0rpm for the cpu fan. And my cpu is set to base clock speed without any OC. Any help is greatly appreciated Specs: I7 4790k Corsair h100i (not the v2) 16gb ram Msi GTX 1080 Gigabyte B85 HD3 Things I have tried: Put the cpu fan cable coming out of the cooling block to a system fan header. Tried to reseat my cooling block on the cpu. (Sorry for any mistakes in the spelling. English is not my first language.)
