Quick question: What are the pros and cons of SMB and FTP, and if possible, provide some example ideal use cases. I wanted to know since I'm setting up a home server, I just want to know which system to stick to. Thanks!

Info about the IP camera: It's a CCTV camera, model TP-MS200IPL https://es.aliexpress.com/item/HD-1080-P-c-mara-IP-2-0MP-4-piezas-l-mparas-IR-P2P-POE-c/32870123277.html What I want to get: The IP camera can record live via FTP on a PC. This PC has the ftp server and a ftp client for testing the connection. I'm using Filezilla for both server and test client. Explanation of my current configuration: I have this camera in my current network, and there are no problems about connectivity. The ftp configuration of the IP camera is correct, as I'll show here: There is a button called "text", which sends a test file so you can check if the connection is ok. Here is what I get, so the connection is working: The red square in the screenshot shows the root directory of the admin user in the ftp (this user has full control on this root folder). When you click on test, the camera creates a folder whose name is the IP of the camera. Inside, it creates the sample file. Ok, so for now I have shown you the networking configuration, this part of the project is working properly. The next part is the configuration of the motion detect recording, and here is my configuration: As you can see is enabled, along with the trigger recording option, and its "Upload to FTP" checkbox. With all of this, the camera should start recording and sending via ftp to the PC when motion is detected. The problem is that this is not sending the video. But, what is funny is that the "Trigger snapshot" option, that basically starts taking shots when motion is detected, works properly and sends the data via ftp to the PC. What I can't understand is, what is the problem here? What is the difference between sending photos and sending live video? Thanks in advance if somebody can help

Hi. I have a small FileZilla FTP running for familymembers to backup offsite (they have one too for my stuff) just in case. We've had them running for 8 years or so without any issues. We barely use them. Today a lot of attempted traffic caught my eye, and it looks like it's being attacked. I don't think anything got through, but I'm not sure what I should do. Any recommendations? I wouldn't want to limit access to only a few select addresses since we sometimes get new IPs and even use our phones if we need something randomly. Thank you for your input. https://pastebin.com/xmc2R3G2 *Replaced the host name IP with "serverIP:port" to avoid people 'checking it out'.

Hey ya'll, At work I have to set up a small LAN for a small exercise, so no internet. We are using old government Windows laptop that work fine, but their image is more restrictive than a regular consumer laptop. I am an administrator so I am able to change anything. I just need to know where to look. So I set up an FTP for people to drop off and edit documents, but I am unable to authenticate. I made a rule that any user can access the FTP, but I haven't had any luck. Seeing if it was user error, I followed the same steps I found online on my computer and was able to get the FTP up. I suspect that there is a group policy that is preventing me from authenticating from the local user accounts bank, but I don't know where to look. I am open to what anyone thinks on here. Thanks.

So i have an old computer that was just lying around, doing nothing and i got bored and wanted to try and make a FTP server with it. I put Xubuntu, because normal ubuntu is too laggy and it just breaks it. I have got it set up so it works with file explorer in windows, but i want it to display the amount of storage it has, and has left, you know, like it does when you plug a USB stick in, or with your internal HDD/SSD, as shown in the picture that is hopefully going to attach if i can remember. As you can see in the image, the server does not show the blue bar thing and or the storage. Issue #2: When i try and view say, a video or picture off the server, it re-downloads it onto the device, is there anyway i can get it to just stream to the device?

I've got an old workstation I built in college for rendering and 3d work (3d animation/modeling major). My career path post college has led me more towards Marketing and Design but I still enjoy Motion Graphics and rendering and am trying to pick up more freelance work in this area. I won't get anything out of selling my old workstation but I figured it could be a killer network storage and render machine. I've made a new computer with more streamline gaming type hardware for speed now and am wanting to slap a few NAS drives in my old workstation and let it live on, it's one of my few possessions to make it out of the Camp wildfire in California. I'm wondering the best way to optimize power setting and if I should mess with any hardware besides more drives, or if a another configuration I'm not thinking of is better. My goal is After Effects and Premiere Render node, PLEX media Server, File share and redundancy backup (lost some data to the fire), and ftp (FileZilla) access to my files when I am away from home if need be. I also have some old websites I'd like to self host eventually to keep the cost down, they are just used as demos at this point for freelance work. Hear are the current specs 2 Xenon 6 core drives (slower) 48gb ram (this is when ram was cheap) Windows 10 Pro Super Micro server mobo (pain in the ass in windows 10, may downgrade to 7) AMD Firepro w7000 workstation card (same as mobo) 512gb ssd 1050w gold power supply Older Omega Audio Card (this thing is pretty sweet but fits an old pci slot, no combination of adapters got it working in my new machine) What I plan to add Network card with Wake on Lan 4 6tb NAS drives Should this thing be more of a media home center attached directly to my living room or just let plex rock it? Anything I can do to get the power usage down, pull the audio and graphics card and smaller power supply? Is windows server going to be a lot better for every application I want? I would like a workflow where I have the option to save the project and render off my main pc as well, that's why I thought maybe I should keep the graphics card in there (launching After Effects independently). Audio card maybe stays if its more of a media center with direct hookup to stereo? This setup is new for me, any advice would be appreciated!

I'm looking for a security camera that uses wifi and has a ftp connection so I can record to my server and not have to deal with a cloud. A vary important thing is that it's cord for power be no bigger then a coaxial TV cable, I rent and Can't drill big holes everywhere.

Hola! I am currently attempting to find a solution for my server needs. I want to be able to host my website locally, host a minecraft server locally, and an ftp server locally. I don't expect traffic to become overwhelming, but I want something more powerful than the core 2 duo I currently have. I am considering two options. Buiyng an older server off of ebay. Building a server from scratch with older parts. I do plan on making it into a rack, I just wanted to see suggestions before I made my mind. (Anything concerning internet speed is already taken care of.)

Ok not sure if this is the right place for this so I'll move it to a different section if need be, But the problem, I at times need to retrieve a large file(s) from my home system on the go.. I use Google Drive atm but it's a lot of wasted time uploading then re-downloading I was hoping for a more streamline option... Like a non-cloud storage client that I can log into and directly copy files back and forth over then internet. I have seen "hard way" setups (home ftp etc) before but since my ISP doesn't have static IP's they are a pain to keep up even if I need to use my splashtop connection to start the transfer or move a file to a specific directory on the "server" side it will still save a lot time overall.. I don't mind a small fee like how Splashtop is about 25-30 USD a year for up to 5 systems, but much more then that isn't worth it for my use case.

Hey everyone, I have tried for a long time to access my home network through the build in vpn on my router but I cannot seem to get it to work. Every ip explanation I found on the internet was pretty good but none of them could explain to me what was going on with my network. What I have found out so far: - Using 'tracert 8.8.8.8' in cmd from my home network gives the result shown in the tracert8888.PNG screencapture. - When I use nmap from my home network on the first jump IP I get the result shown in nmap46[1]FromHome.PNG. - When I use nmap from my mobile network (Using my phone as a hotspot) I get the result shown in nmap46[1]FromMobile.PNG. - When I google "WhatsMyIp" I get a slightly different ip adress from my first tracert jump, only the last digits are different. I will name this ip adress in my screenshots with a small [2]. - Using nmap from home gives nmap46[2]FromHome.PNG. - Using nmap from my mobile network gives nmap46[2]FromMobile.PNG. - On the RouterTroubleshootingDiagnostic.PNG picure the IPv4 adress is 172.xx.xxx.xx, IPv6 is blank (This is just an image I got from google images because I could not get the Linksys SmartWifi pages in English, but it is the same). - When I use nmap on this ip address from my home network it says there are 8 ports open and 992 closed, the result is shown in the nmap172FromHome.PNG screencapture. - When I use nmap from my mobile network I get the result shown in nmap172FromMobile.PNG. When I download my OpenVPN profile, standard over port 1194, and try to reach my home network from my mobile network it get stuck on 'MANAGEMENT: >STATE:1544656134,WAIT,,,,,,' and then gives an error of 'TLS Error: TLS handshake failed'. When I connect to my home network with OpenVPN while on my home network it does work. (This might seem trivial, but just yesterday I could not connect to my home network via a VPN while I was already on my home network) My goal is to be able to use the drive I have connected to my router when I am away from my home network. As you might have guessed; the FTP server, also standard over port 1994, does not work from my mobile network either. It does work form my home network. I have followed the few instructions on the linksys website but they don't get me very far. The router was reset yesterday so all settings are standard. Can someone explain to me what is going on with my network and how I might be able to fix it? Thank you.

This is my first post here and I think I picked the correct place to post this. At work we use an FTP site hosted by the manufacturer we represent to download software for the equipment we work on. Over the last couple of weeks, we have been unable to access the site while using our network at the office. If we connect to a mobile hotspot or a different network, at home for example, where the network location is set to Home rather than domain, it works just fine. On the network at the office, any browser with Passive FTP turned on or off, we get host unreachable. Using file explorer I get error 200 ASCII type set. Filezilla seems to work intermittently while on the office network. I am trying to determine if this is an issue on my office side or the host side so we can contact the correct person to fix the issue. Our IT company that we use tried a couple things (they didn't tell me what they did) to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Every file manager I tested changed so far overwrites the date and time of the files with the current date and time when moving. Many files have no date and time information in the file name. Yes, one can also create file lists using ls or stat in an Android terminal. But I would also like to keep the original attribute date and times to make data management less inconvenient and be able to sort by time on the desktop file manager accessing the SMB or FTP server. How can I copy files to an SMB or FTP server while keeping the original date and time information? MTP is bogus garbage that sometimes happens to display all files and sometimes not. MTP supports no parallelism. MTP needs minute to load the list of files in a directory with 1000 files, and needs minutes to “pRePaRE” copying the files. USB-OTG inconveniently reserves the USB port while hanging down, drains the non-replaceable battery faster and also has the same problem: no file manager I know preserves the original date and time information, especially Google's shitty precluded file manager (ES File Explorer was even better in 2012) that they force users to access OTG with since Nougat. How can I copy files to SMB or FTP while keeping the original date/time attributes?

Hello, Recently my router malfunctioned and I couldn't buy a new one because of the lockdown. So the Stp cable of my modem now plugs in directly to my laptop. In the mean time I created a FTP server on Windows but I can't access that through the network without forwarding/opening the port 21. I was looking for some ways to do that in windows as because I do not have any software level access to my modem. But I couldn't find a definite page for that. Does anyone know how to do that? Thanks.

I have made my HDD a FTP server with the help of Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager App which comes default with windows. When I turn on my pc, the server starts up, and I can access my files through wifi (router). I just have simply set it up so anonymous users can join. So people with my wifi access can join. I only use it for copying and deleting data from my phone. I do not have a Laptop. I have noticed I can change the port but I can't change the ip to anyother than the one windows keeps as default which was 192.168.0.108. \/ Now the thing is, I've noticed for the past few days, I can't randomly connect to the ftp. So, I check the binding dropdown and sure enough it has changed to 192.168.0.105 at the last. It was also 106 a few days ago. After, making it 105 (the new default), I can connect to the site albeit by changing the ip. /\ Why is it changing randomly? It's not related to restarts either. Somedays I restart and still can access the old ip. And it just changes randomly, it's such a nuisence to change it for every single ftp I have. I don't think it's a router issue, because I can temporarly fix it without going to router settings. How can I fix this changing issue? Do you have any other local FTP recommendations which are better than this setup? Because this doesn't seem like the best setup.

I asked this question before on stackoverflow but i got 0 replies and also a downvote. I hope someone could help me. First of all sorry for my bad English because i am from Germany. For generall infromations: node version 12.14.0 npm version 6.13.4 electron version 8.2.5 angular version 9.1.4 I have generated a Electron Angular App from this template and i added a button so that when i click the button the script trys to send files to ftp via a npm ftp package. The problem is none of the packages does work correct like it should. Packages i tried: ftp ftp-client basic-ftp The Problem i had with ftp: when i use this package i must click the button at least twice so that it connects and uploads the file. It should upload the file imidiatly but it doesnt. I tested a few things and found out that its becuase it times out after 10 seconds. But thats not the problem. The problem is that it never ever connects on the first attempt. I've tested it at least 30 times and it always times out at the first attempt. The Problem i had with basic-ftp: The problem here was that it connects directly at the first attempt but it takes like 10 seconds to connect to the ftp and then uploads the file in another 10 seconds or takes even longer. Also it just sometimes works on the first attempt. Sometimes i must click the button 5-10 times so it uploads the file. It logs a lot to the console if you follow the example code. But the log doesnt seem to have any errors or something it just doesnt go like it takes a nap and then wakes up again. The Problem i had with ftp-client: Here the problem is realy not complicated: it just doesnt work. Sometimes it gives me an "Error: Control connection timed out." after i hit the button 5 to 8 times and sometimes it just doesnt work. In every case i used the example code from every repository but just for reference here are the codes i used for the diffrent npm packages: ftp: var Client = require('ftp'); var fs = require('fs'); var c = new Client(); c.on('ready', function() { c.put('C:/test/test.txt', 'test.txt', function(err) { if (err) throw err; c.end(); }); }); // connect to localhost:21 as anonymous c.connect({host: "local.host.com", username: "username", password: "**********"}); ftp-client: const config = { host: 'local.host.com', port: 21, user: 'username', password: '*******' } var ftpClient = require('ftp-client'); var client = new ftpClient(config, {}); client.connect(function() { client.upload(["C:/test/test.txt"], './', { baseDir: 'test', overwrite: 'all' }, function(result) { console.log(result); }) }) basic-ftp: const ftp = require("basic-ftp") async function example() { const client = new ftp.Client() client.ftp.verbose = true try { await client.access({ host: "local.host.com", user: "username", password: "***********", secure: true }) console.log(await client.list()) await client.uploadFrom("C:/test/test.txt", "test.txt") } catch(err) { console.log(err) } client.close() } I realy hope anyone can help me. I realy dont know where the mistake is. I also didnt upload a realy big file it was just an .txt with "Hello World" in it. As you might have guessed the test.txt is located in "C:/test/test.txt" and also the domain "local.host.com" is just a placeholder.

Hi, I am away from home and when I last setup my FTP server it was working with everyone devices just fine so I haven't been messing with it. I got a new laptop for school and my travels and I was trying to get into that server so I could so how well it would work when I am 15 hours away from home. FileZilla works just fine with the server but windows file explorer is having issues and maybe I have just pressed a wrong button... when I connect to the server with the add network folder button it never asks for a username and password like it had with my other installs and there being, I can't access the server like that. Maybe there is something I am doing wrong or if there is an issue with my system

So myself and a friend are colaborating on a project (music) and I'd like to be able to send him files without having to upload them to a website for him to download. Is it possible I can map a network drive on his PC that links back to my server at my house? He's really not very tech savvy at all so a I feel like mapping a network drive is the simplest solution that doesnt require any logins (like a VPN or FTP) and that doesn't require me to upload files, send him the link, he downloads it, reuploads, sends me the link and so on. I have a computer running Windows Server 2016 that acts as a TeamSpeak server, a game hosting server and my own file storage server, which is on 24/7. Is this possible for me to do? Thank you!

I have a computer running Ubuntu Server that I need to frequently transfer files to. Is there a way I can do this without having to type a bunch of commands every time I need to move a file? The system I have envisioned is more similar to web server FTP's. Using a program like FileZilla, you can connect to a web hosting server (that is probably not running a UI-based OS like windows) anywhere in the world, and transfer files with effectively drag-and-drop ease. Is there something analogous to this for what I am trying to do? I currently have PuTTY set up with a VM I'm using for testing before I move on to the real thing. While PuTTY would allow me to access the server remotely, I don't think I could transfer files through PuTTY, and even if it was possible, I am trying to avoid using the command line for this. Too inefficient for on-the-fly transfers.

So here is a quick rundown of what has gone on so far. I spent many hours configuring my router for port forwarding (success) Set up a website which I want to use for file sharing (success) setting up a system, that when i upload new files to my ftp storage server that it gets displayed on my website, but not with the usual ftp website look that you would get with ftp:// (nope) I want it to be on a spreadsheet of some sort, directly implemented into my website. And when a new file is uploaded, it shows on the spreadsheet with the name and size or some sort of information, and from here i can directly download it with the click of a button. I know i could simply put a link to the website, but i want to make it look professional. Basically what i need is some sort of platform or program (preferably open source/free) that can mirror the data on my ftp site to my actual site, but in a graph/spreadsheet of some sort, so it doesn't look like plain html. I want it to look something like google drive or onedrive where it shows up nice and modern, and i can then access it. Maybe this is possible by uploading the files to a folder inside the website folder and then hosting it myself using ftp web hosting?

Hi, everyone! I use a PowerLine in my home to connect my laptop via ethernet, so I have better internet, lower ping, etc. I was thinking of buying cat6 cables to replace the ones it came with, which are cat5, not even cat5e. They can still handle a 1Gbps connection because they're really short, but still, I'd prefer having cat6 just to be sure I'll never have a problem with bandwidth. The thing is, I was looking for cables and came across different types, such as UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) and FTP (Foiled-screen Twisted Pair), and googled it to find that the UTP have no "insulation" to interference and the FTP ones have. But since I'm using PowerLine, wouldn't it be worthless to get the FTP ones since part of the circuit is through the house's electric wiring, which, I'm pretty sure have a lot of interference? Thanks in advance!
