~ Topic Introduction ~ Quite recently, I've been running into a few audio issues, and it's been bothering me. Probably doesn't help I use 2 sound systems for the same audio stream, but regardless. I've been interested in buying a PCIe x1 sound card to fix some of those issues, and have a bit more flexibility in general, like actually having a TOSLINK-in port. But the main thing I'm wondering about, is how many "lanes" am I using on my CPU currently? I'm not a computer genius, so I'm not sure. ~ Currently Installed Parts ~ I've been called 'strange' for the parts I use, but here's some of them, in which I would assume uses PCIe lanes. - MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Aero GB OC (PCIe 3.0 x16) - AverMedia Live Gamer Lite HD (PCIe 3.0 x1) - Samsung 960 EVO NVMe SSD (M.2) - Western Digital M.2 SATA SSD (M.2) - X299 Chipset From what I heard, Samsung's 960 EVO and PRO series NVMe SSD runs on a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface through the M.2 slot, if I'm not mistaken. I'd assume I use 21 PCIe lanes or something, but I can't tell for sure. Kind of feel like an idiot for thinking I use that much, but I honestly have no idea. ;w; ~ Comments ~ So I'm asking you, the community. How many PCIe lanes am I using? Because, again, I have no idea. Realizing I may or may not sound like an idiot for posting this, I felt like asking regardless. If anyone has an idea, or even know, please inform me. ~ Recap ~ Please don't approach me with a wall of text just because this post is related to a sound card, in 2018. >-< I'm mostly concerned about my PCIe lane usage, based off from what I currently use. Thanks in advance for those who understand. ^^;

I am currently trying to troubleshoot my motherboard's rear USB3.0 ports not functioning as anything other than USB2.0. USBTreeView is reporting Superspeed USB3.0 capable ports that don't correspond to any of my physical ports. Because I am using a HAF-X case, which predates internal headers, I can't just plug those in to try. Can anyone suggest any USB3.0 expansion solution? I am unfortunately out of PCI slots and hot swap bays, so ideally a 5.25" bay or conversion of the front USB3.0 ports would be ideal. I've looked around but I couldn't seem to find any way to directly go from male USB A (what I would need for front IO) to male internal connector, All the 5.25" bay solutions I've looked at seemed to either have additional unnecessary connectors (card readers, USB-C, front audio, etc). I would be looking in the EU so any suggestions even for where to look would be quite appreciated.

Buying a front panel USB hub with an extra audio header. My OCD makes it very hard to think about not being able to use both headphone/mic ports(one on the case, one on the hub) and I was wondering if anyone knew of a PCIe card or header spliter I could install to make both ports usable.

Hello friends, Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum: My motherboard only has one 9-pin USB 2.0 header but I need two!!! I have one for my front USB header but need another 9 pin header for my WIFI/BT card. I have an extra PCIe x1 expansion slot on my motherboard. Can someone recommend a PCIe to 9 pin header adapter/card which I could connect my WIFI/BT card to? This is my Gigabyte H310M A mobo This is my Intel AC9260 WIFI/BT card

This might seem like a stupid question but I’m going to be getting a Ryzen 5 2400g looking to install a GPU in the future. I will also be putting a WiFi card into my build. I have heard things about how AMD splits the PCIE lanes between the APU and CPU do they have 8 each. Would the WiFi card and GPU be a problem together in the future?

My server needs room for 4+ HDDs but there’s no more SATA ports on my asus z10pe-d16 ws. is it possible to use a PCIe to SATA 3 card? it runs unRaid and all drives are WD Red NAS Pro 6tb.

Hey Linus, or anybody else worthy. (Bet theres alot) I have this HP 3510m netbook and its a real pos. I was watching one of your videos it was about "The Beast" or the m.2 pcie expansion slot thing. (Yes thing..). Well this 3510 netbook has solder joints for a second m.2 expansion slot. I was wondering if it was possible to solder a second m.2 slot on and even if you don't think so what would the slot be called coming from an electronics warehouse. I don't wanna break this netbook but im almost willing to do anything to bring it back to life. what are your peoples thoughts ? ANYBODY???

I am currently in the market for a laptop for college and some light media use. I am having some issues finding the right laptop for me. Care to help? I have roughly $300 (+/- $100, $400 is fine but $300 is ideal). I will settle for no less than 8gb of RAM, but most laptops at this price point have 2-4. So, could you help me find a laptop with a 1080p display for up to $400 with expandable RAM? (links to memory appreciated) Thank you so much, anyone who helps me will be the greatest thing to ever happen to my education. EDIT: P.S., thinner is always better

Preface This guide hopes to answer the question “what is PCIe” and more specifically to help serve as a guide to system planning. I have tried to make this as accurate and as easy to read as I can. If you spot any inaccuracies please let me know so that I can fix them. What is the PCIe Interface? Peripheral Component Interface - express (PCIe) is a bus that allows expansion cards inside your computer to communicate with other components. You use the PCIe system by putting cards into slots on the motherboard. These cards can be things like graphics cards, RAID cards, network cards, even co-processors. How Does the PCIe Interface Work? What Exactly Is A Lane? How Does All This Affect Me?

I know that UnRaid can be a bit of a pain when it comes to hardware compatibility. But my current board only has 6 SATA ports and I'm looking at adding an extra 2 or 4 ports. Only main consideration I've got to keep in mind at the moment is cost. I have a very limited budget, and I'm not sure if I'd be better off just buying bigger drives. Current UnRaid build; CPU: A6-5400K Motherboard: F2A75M-D3H RAM: random 8GB single stick HDD array: 3x 1TB WD Greens, 1x Hitachi Desktar 1TB, 1x Seagate 500GB PSU: Thermaltake OEM 500w thing Case: Cooler Master HAF XM Any suggestions would be appreciated! Cheers, Shaun

I am planning on adding some type of expansion to my server and I want to make the most of the full PCI-E X16 lane which can either run at 2.0 or 3.0 depending on the processor I use in it. I have seen some cards which offer a couple of usb 3.1 ports (20 gigabits) and some which offer four USB 3 ports (20 gigabits) but this is a bit of a waste compared to the total amount of capacity available on the lane which is something like 128Gbps. I know it'll never get the full bandwidth but surely there's a PCIe card out somewhere which will make better use of all of available bandwidth and I'm hoping that someone knows about some sort of card like this? There isn't much space left in the server so I can't split or go full size (I can go full length) but there is plenty of space outside for an external solution providing that it isn't one of them stupidly priced £1000+ external bays.

Hello everyone! First post here. I am attempting to build my first rig for a friend of mine who tried to buy an Alienware X51. Here is what I got: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/gamesahoy/saved/#view=h6ctt6 The reason behind the case of choice is because of my recent visit to LMG. How did I aquire this piece of hardware? Some of you might have a clue. So my question is this: Is it possible to add a USB 3.0 via PCIe, or any other method?

Hi guys I was just looking intently at my new PC after buying an corsair h100i GTX and thought to my self, "could i expand that?", i was going to go for a full water cooling loop but i chose the AIO instead, eventually i wanted have a GPU block and other awesome water cooling gear, but i wanted to know if there was a cheaper option, than having to buy a new kit, as you can tell i am quite reluctant to throw away a brand new AIO cooler. Thanks ShavedCloaca

Two new expansions have been announced for The Witcher 3 titled Hearts of Stone & Blood and Wine. Really not a fan of paid DLC's and season passes (in this case "expansion passes") at all whether it's from CDPR or Ubisoft. Announcing 16 free DLC's before launch was a brave move but this is just retracting on what they've said about charging for extra content. Don't get me wrong, I love CDPR and how they go about things but this is something that will lose quite a few fans. I might just cancel my pre-order because of this. The game will probably still end up being great anyway but it's not a great move by them both in terms of screwing their fans over and pre-order sales. Update: Pricing is $24.99 USD for the expansion pass. It's available for pre-order on Steam here or DRM free at GoG here. Also available as a bundle with the game for $79.99 USD on Steam here. I'm planning to buy a Fractal Design Kelvin S24 adding a EK-RES X3 150 reservoir and changing tubing and coolant. Any tips or advices? Is it ok if the reservoir is lower than the pump/cpu block?

Hey everyone, I am new to building a PC and I ran into a problem. My case has a standard set of two USB 3.0 Ports on the front that connect to the motherboard. I recently bought an internal card reader that also had a USB 3.0 port. Since my motherboard only has one USB 3.0 connector, I am stuck with an extra 20-pin cable not connected to anything inside the case and two nonfunctional USB 3.0 ports. Here is my question: I have been looking around at some PCI and PCI Express expansion cards with extra USB 3.0 ports and another internal 20-pin connector. Is that connector on those cards supposed to be for connecting more ports, or is it for connecting to the motherboard? I would assume it would be for more ports, but I recently bought a Bluetooth card that plugged into my USB 2.0 connectors on my motherboard as well, so I just wanted to confirm before I went ahead and bought anything. Also, any recommendations on any brands that I should get, or does it not matter? Thanks

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these cards at all? I've recently converted an older PC into storage which has worked out great but the only issue is the lack of Sata ports (only has 4) so it's limiting the storage capacity quite a bit. I've found this one on Amazon which seems favourably reviewed, I was curious if anyone currently uses or has used one they like. Also the drives I'm intending to use won't be in a raid array, just simply hooked up in the usual manner.

Campaign link: http://newoffice.linustechtips.com We've had an amazing couple of years here at Linus Media Group, and we can't wait to see what the future holds! Especially with your help... REWARDS TRACKER LINKS $12,000 campaign reward link: http://bit.ly/1uNcqdH CROWD FUNDING Q&A FROM NOV. 21 WAN SHOW Q: Why don’t you have lower contribution tiers like $1 A: Right now everything is going through PayPal and for very small transactions the proportion of the payment that they take for their cut is higher, so rather than encouraging the members of our community who can afford it least to give a bunch of their money to PayPal we would rather they keep it for themselves. Q: Your stretch targets are ridiculous. Why are they so high A: You’re right, they were much higher than they should have been initially, and a big part of the reason for that is we weren’t sure how much momentum this campaign would have and we didn’t want to trap ourselves by putting ourselves in a situation where we had to do every stretch target in a span of a week. Now that we can see how things are tracking we have rearranged the stretch targets to make them much more attainable, but spread them out enough that we won’t be doing everything at once throughout the campaign. Q: Aren’t you guys a business? Why aren’t you seeking investment or taking out a loan A: Yes we are a business, but those of you savvy enough to figure out these types of business strategies should also be savvy enough to know that moving into a much larger space is going to cost a LOT more than $50,000 - our goal for the campaign - even in the short term. We are exploring every avenue necessary to grow and keep delivering the best content we can regardless of how much we raise during this campaign Q: Then why are you asking us for money at all? A: Because some of you WANT to help us in this way. To those people we send our heartfelt gratitude, and to everyone else, we still send our heartfelt gratitude, because EVERY contribution - even one view on a video - counts. The thing to realize here is we aren’t holding anything hostage if we don’t hit the campaign goal. Everything will go towards doing our best to keep doing what we’re doing. If you like that, great. If you don’t, then don’t contribute. Q: Why don’t you have any cool physical rewards A: This actually ties into the last one. We’re asking for money so that we can move into a bigger space, hire more people, and make better content, NOT so we can sell you a bunch of stickers, T-shirts, and hats. If you want to contribute to Linus Media Group by buying a T-shirt, then go buy a T-shirt…. We have a variety of styles on both of our web shops. The usual complaint about the web stores is “omg the shipping is so expensive” to which I’d reply “Then I guess you figured out why physical merchandise would basically kill any possibility of using the funding from this campaign to fund a move. That cost doesn’t go away because it’s a special crowd-funding T-shirt. So out of that $25 reward tier, we’ll STILL be paying $8 per T-shirt and up to $13 or MORE for International shipping. Q: I don’t want to contribute because investing in a company without any ROI is stupid. I want to be a stakeholder. A: We don’t want stakeholders, and I suspect neither do the people who ARE contributing to our new office expansion - the closet thing we have to direct backers for our company! If we had stakeholders all of a sudden there might be pressure to start paying dividends and being accountable for the kind of content we’re making to some random that the community has never met. People are contributing because they want ME in charge without some shadow lurking over my shoulder telling me what to do.

Hi, I've been watching a few videos on cases and graphics cards and there are things on the back of the case they refer to called PCI Expansion slots or something and I'm not sure what they do and what they're used for and why. Is it if a graphics card is really big you have to take out one of the covers to expand it so you can fit the actual GPU slots and connectors through? If someone could explain what they are and what they are used for I'd be so thankful, Thanks

Hi all, I'm doing my first watercooling build today and I just have some questions about prep and future expansion of my loop. For now I'm just going to be watercooling my CPU but I plan on expanding my loop to include dual (and possibly triple) graphics cards in the future. I'm using an Enthoo Primo case with a Corsair AF140 for the rear fan so I can reuse the 3 non led 140mm fans the case comes with on the top 140mm radiator I'm going to install. So my questions are: -The tubing comes with the prep additive and how should I use that? Do I build the entire loop and fill it with distilled water and add the sys prep to it so it runs through all the components then drain the liquid and refill it with clean distilled water and add the biocidal agent? or is there an easier way to do this? -In the future I would like to expand my loop to include CPU, 3 GPUs and Motherboard and have everything overclocked and running silent. I would like to know how much radiator space I would require to keep a full loop like that running overclocked and silent. Right now I'll only have a 420mm rad on top but what other rad combos should I use for my future expansion? This case has a lot of room and options for watercooling so I want to make sure I'm getting the best cooling possible to run a system like that. The heat it would generate would be similar to an overclocked i7 5820k, 3 overclocked GTX 780s and a motherboard with waterblocks on it. The parts I ordered for my current loop are these: Monsoon Series Two Premium D5 Dual Bay Resevoir http://www.frozencpu.com/products/19676/ex-res-490/Monsoon_Series_Two_Premium_D5_MCP655_Dual_Bay_Reservoir_w_Quick_Change_LED_Control_-_Matte_Black_w_Black_Trim_M2-D5P-MB.html?id=spYhPTsg&mv_pc=149 Laing D5T Basic pump Swifttech Lok-Seal Compression Fittings - 1/2"ID x 3/4"OD for the rad and block http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15908/ex-tub-1290/Swiftech_Lok-Seal_Compression_Fitting_G14_Thread_-_12_ID_x_34_OD_-_Black_3-4X1-2-G1-4-CF-BK.html?id=spYhPTsg&mv_pc=150 PrimoChill PrimoFlex Advanced LRT Tubing - 1/2"ID x 3/4"OD - Red http://www.frozencpu.com/products/17888/ex-tub-1622/PrimoChill_PrimoFlex_Advanced_LRT_Tubing_12ID_x_34_OD_-_10ft_Retail_Pack_-_Bloodshed_Red_PFLEXA10-34-R_w_Free_Sys_Prep.html?id=spYhPTsg&mv_pc=151 Alphacool NexXxos UT60 140mm Radiator http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16826/ex-rad-427/Alphacool_NexXxoS_UT60_Full_Copper_Triple_140mm_Radiator.html?id=spYhPTsg&mv_pc=152 Phanteks 140mm fans (PH-F140SP_BK) http://www.amazon.com/Phanteks-140mm-Cooling-Fan-PH-F140SP_BK/dp/B00E9NZV4Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1416250384&sr=1-1&keywords=phanteks+140mm Bitspower Black Sparkle Barb Fittings - 1/2" ID for dual bay res (I got these since I wouldn't be able to see the fittings once they are installed in the bay res and could save money there) http://www.frozencpu.com/products/7612/ex-tub-315/Bitspower_Black_Sparkle_G14_Barb_Fitting_-_12_ID_BP-BSWP-C01.html?id=spYhPTsg&mv_pc=153 EK Supremacy EVO CPU block http://www.frozencpu.com/products/19629/ex-blc-1443/EK_Supremacy_EVO_Universal_CPU_Liquid_Cooling_Block_-_Acetal_EK-Supremacy_EVO_-_Acetal.html?id=spYhPTsg&mv_pc=154 I'm going to use distilled water so I got a IandH Dead-Water biocidal additive http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11744/ex-liq-154/IandH_Dead-Water_Copper_Sulfate_Biocidal_PC_Coolant_Additive_-_15_mL.html?id=spYhPTsg&mv_pc=155

4 years ago I got a 1.5TB WD Elements early in the year for $117 because the price was right. Latter that year I got another 2TB one for $130 because of price cuts. It's nice that they share the same power and USB cables between them both. A good portion of what's on the 1.5TB drive is backed up on the 2TB drive. I have a 3TB Green drive from 2012 that's holding data to be accessed anytime while the 1.5 and 2TB drives get backups whenever I see fit, then I store them away in a closet. We're looking at at least 1TB of identical data being stored between the 2 external USB and 1 internal SATA drives. Some troubleshooting aside they're still working, but are running out of space. A lot of the data not part of the 1TB 2-3x backed up I could stand to go through and delete like cleaning out a garage, but let's say I'm in the market for a new external HD. 2 years ago I got my first computer with USB 3.0. I'm seeing some sales on amazon for 4TB USB 3.0 hard drives, both the WD My Book and Seagate Expansion 4TB are $130 USD. I haven't been paying any attention to prices since these things were like $180-200, so : 1. How much of deal is $130 for a 4TB external HD? I'm seeing 3TB ones for $120, so you'd have to go with the 4TB ones. What is the normal Amazon rate for these HDs? How much of a price difference? 2. Which one is better, the WD My Book or the Seagate Expansion. Is there something faulty about 4TB HDs still, even external? 3. Is anything gonna be released in the foreseeable future, like just around the corner next year that's gonna make these obsolete or not worth buying? These are both from 2013. So pretty much I wanna know how much of a discount are they for $130, which one is better seeing that they're the same price and is something about to be released that will change the market so I should hold off?
