I have a Dell inspiron 3542 with CPU:- i5 4210U 1.7Ghz Ram: 4Gb DDR3L GPU: Nvidia Geforce 820m Storage: 1Tb HDD.. My service tag is: F8YR812... I have a performance GPU as you see my specs.. I am not able to play games like Mafia 3 even at 10fps.. I am planning to use a eGPU mini pcie adapter to use as a external graphics by replacing the Wi-Fi card for mini pcie.. I want to know if I will be able to do that.. Because I havent connected any eGPU now. So when I go to BIOS menu there is no option for graphics card.. So when I will attach a external GPU using eGPU will it work.. With my laptop.. and if it will work.. I am planning to use nvidia GTX 1050ti 4Gb for the external card.. Please tell me will it work.. Cause I have to spend 250$ for this Please...

Captain Pepper Linus Tech Forums 1/31/17 Jerry Rigging a Razer Core I've seen it done before, but I've only seen one true DIY version. I wanna know if it can be done without having to purchase something like the Akito Thunder (https://www.amazon.com/Thunder3-Pcie-Expansion-Box-Currently/dp/B01K5Z13I2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485886399&sr=8-1&keywords=akito+node) and I thought no better place to ask than here. I have seen a really sketchy looking one where a guy chopped up an old PC case to do it, but I really wanna see if there's a way to make one that will look better than that.

Hello Community, I would like to raise a topic about the future of desktop computers and their relationships with laptops. Currently, the usual setup for a general consumer is a desktop computer and a laptop(not talking about the 50lbs "laptops"). Usually you use the laptop when you travel and do the casual productivity tasks (and the often gaming) on it. And if you need to do more power-consuming tasks like 3D modeling or 4K 60fps gaming, you would use the desktop computer with the beefy configuration, dedicated graphics card, faster processor. But with the future of connectivity being USB Type C and Thunderbolt-3 and the high bandwidth, wouldn't the future of desktop computer being a laptop that you can carry around? In place of your usual desktop computer for heavy tasks you would find at home an external GPU, a dock for Internet and more USB, external hardrives, keyboard, mouse and monitor(s) All you'll need to do is plug in all the connectors and voilà. Laptops processors have a slower clock base, but some manufacturers(Schenker, XMG, SAGER...) allow you to choose a desktop processor therefore not having to compromise the raw power of your rig. Take a laptop with a i7 quadcore CPU and add a GTX Titan as a eGPU, and it's "pretty decent" That would justify the fact of having a 2017 Macbook Pro or the new high end laptops with only USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 and not having to compromise. What do you think?

So I just ordered this off of Banggood for my Dell Precision m4800, and I'll be putting a GTX 770 (or 790, I can't remember what my friend has) in it. I already have a PSU (really cheap one from my university surplus), so I think I've got everything I need. Am I doing this right, or am I forgetting anything? Also, what kind of boost should I expect? My current GPU is the one in my laptop, the K2100M, so will the expresscard link be too much of a bottleneck?

I plan have only 1 setup for desktop and notebook. Will use new macbook pro with high speed usb-c/thunderbolt 3 to connect it to egpu, macbook thunderbolt 3 support 40 gb/s bandwidth. I plan use gtx 1080, my goal for gpu is VR (for that will run Windows on macbook), I will buy htc vive. My main question is, it's possible use gtx 1080 on macbook through egpu using thunderbolt 3 and get full performance (usb-c/thunderbolt 3 by some way won't limit gtx 1080 performance (bandwidth limit maybe)? Setup would be: Macbook Pro EGPU that support thunderbolt 3 40gb/s bandwidth GTX 1080 USB-C Monitor Henger dock (just dock macbook and I have theoricaliy full desktop power). If possible, you think I will get enough performance for HTC vive? Thanks

The cards are both watercooled and I'm impartial on red vs green so which card is better? 1070 is $100 CAD more but double RAM and newer gen. Also heard 1070's are tech current 1440p champ but I am curious. https://www.amazon.ca/MSI-GTX-VRready-1070-Corsair/dp/B01GUAJMNE/ref=sr_1_76?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1486598416&sr=1-76&keywords=gtx%2B1070&th=1 vs. https://www.amazon.ca/XFX-R9-FURY-4QFA-RADEON-FURY-DDR5/dp/B0106IJXX0/ref=sr_1_50?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1486598006&sr=1-50&keywords=gtx+1070

Hey, I have a weird problem with mine. I decided to try to do an eGPU setup. I have the EXP GDC Beast, a GTX 1050, and an EVGA 500 Watt power supply. I have the beast plugged into the power supply with the long 20 pin connector and the 4 pin connector labeled "CPU", but the beast and the PSU never turn on. There are no fans on and no lights. I can get it to turn on for half a second, then turn off again, if I unplug everything, then plug in the HDMI(plug that connects to computer), then the power, but it seems like that will break it, and this only happens when the left switch is set to "PWR". I have the left switch set to "ATX", and the right set to off. Have any of you had this problem, I am stumped right now. Thanks! Also, to use a normal PSU, do you need the switch on ATX or PW? Ok, now I did the paperclip test without the GDC beast plugged in, and the power supply fan turned on. Do you know what's wrong?

So, i ordered an EXP GDC v8.0 and i want to connect it via msata. I have lenovo y580 running i7-3610qm, GTX 660m, and 8gb ram. My Questions are: What would be less bottleneck? What card? (NVIDIA 1050 Ti , 1060 3gb or AMD rx470, rx480 4gb / else ) ( +/- 250$ budget) Would i be able to use internal and external display at the same time? (browsing on internal and gaming on external) Which card is more futureproof? (some time i will put it in a normal pc) When stuff arrives i could show my results, benchmarks etc. Thanks for help.

Hi there guys need your help, so I'm planning on going for an egpu setup for my Asus X550LD laptop just need some help trying to plan out the route I'd need to take when it comes to putting the cable into the mpcie port, not sure where it is on the laptop, I have opened the laptop before from the top to clean the mouse cable but can't remember if the mpcie port is on the top or underneath. does anyone know where the port maybe so i know what i need to do when it comes to using the EXP GDC to add an external gpu to the laptop.

Hello, This is my first time posting on this forum, but I feel like this would be the best place to ask my question. So here we go. So I have a Lenovo Y510p laptop http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y510p/ with two Nvidia 750m GPUs running in SLI (this is option given the ultrabay support that lenovo has so I can take out the second GPU and only run one if I choose to.) I use this laptop basically as a desktop because my monitor is bigger and I have a mechanical keyboard that I like to use. So it stays closed and is hooked up to my monitor via HDMI. time is starting to take its toll on this computer and I'm wanting to build myself another desktop soon so what better way to start then to hold myself over with a eGPU until i slowly build my desktop. Now to the nitty gritty. I'm here asking all of you your best opinions on how I will maximize the performance of this laptop with a eGPU. I would like to avoid bottlenecks the best I can, but as I said above this is just going to be temporary. If I'm not mistaken the only option I have is my mini pcie slot that my wifi card is in, but if any of you know a way to use the ultrabay that (i assume) would probably give me the best performance from the GPU. for the graphics card I plan on using. It will either be a GTX 1060 or a GTX 1070. I don't have any interest in having a AMD card. I have seen ultrabay extention egpus that work with AMD cards, but as i just said. I would rather go with Nvidia. Thank you all in advance! I will try and post back as soon as I possibly can in reply to you all.

Hi. I'm new here, so excuse me if the topic is in the wrong section. Have been watching the LTTs videos for a good few months now. For work related reasons I have a 2016 Macbook Pro, and I am a film editor, so basically I needed a mobile suite to work in, and it made sense to stay with Apple to not change the workflow, so none of that Apple hate nonsense. To start things off, I'm interested to see if there are any eGPU gurus here? I have been floating on the idea of an external GPU for my Macbook since I bought it, as a way to increase workflow when I am at my usual workstation. I have done my research around it, and seen that indeed they are compatible with some minor hacking, and the acceleration in Adobe products is there. However, I had heard time and time again, that none of the 10 series cards work on Mac, and I want to use the best available card for my machine. I was a little disappointed, but all the egpu videos I can find on the eGPU for Mac are prior the new year, and I saw nvidia have released new drivers here. (Yes I realize I could hack these to work in Windows, but I'd like to maintain my workflow if possible!) http://www.nvidia.ca/object/macosx-cuda-8.0.63-driver.html And upon inspection on the Wiki page, I saw the Pascal line of cards listed under the supported GPU section https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA I am probably wrong, but would this mean that support for Pascal cards is available on Mac currently? Or am I reading this wrong. Thanks in advance!

Dell Latitude e5480/e5570/e5580 with eGPU?
sicily428 posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi! i would like a lightweigt laptop with a thunderbolt3 port. i need a gpu nvidia quadro m4000 for my mechanical design so i would like to use an egpu. i'm watching for a dell latitude which have a cpu quadcore i7-6820hq/i7-7820hq. do you have infos about drivers/firmware of tb3 port in dell latitude e5480/e5570/e5580? do you know the compatibility with egpu like razer core, akitio node, powercolor devil box or asus xg station 2? i know that tb3 is x4 in these three models. do you know if somebody has already tried to connect latitude with egpus? -
Hi everyone, I recently committed to getting the EXP GDC Beast eGPU dock to plug into my MSI GS70 2PE Stealth Pro. I'm quite new to these things and I'm a little lost. Originally it would only post to my laptop screen and not to the screen which is plugged into the HDMI on the eGPU. First, I got error code 43. At that time, the computer recognised my CPU, dGPU and the eGPU. After some attempts and modding the bios (which my friend helped me do) I am now in a situation where the 1050 TI is no longer recognised as what it is, but instead is recognised as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. I cant install NVIDIA drivers and my laptop screen is also black. If anyone has any recommendations or anything I should try, I would love to hear it. Thanks in advance!

Hello. Here is the situation: I have a msi gs63 and im looking for a dock where I can plug in my monitor (not yet bought looking for a ultrawide >500 eu )mouse keyboard and headset(usb or 3.5mm jack) a ethernet port would be nice but not a must. I hate cables so max 1 cable from the laptop to the dock. When i was looking i saw docks thad fit the discription but they cost 300 eu and then i tought for 100 more there are egpu docks thad also fit the discription thad give the option for a gpu upgrade. But dont know if they work with msi. Also something like the henge dock would also be great.

Ok, so Im building an eGPU and my laptop doesn't have an access port nor do I want to screw or unscrew parts when I want to take it places. So I thought I would use a pcie mini to usb 3.0 adapter. Do you think this would work? Specs. Laptop- Asus x555D GPU- GTX 560 Dock- GDC Beast laptop graphics extender. Thank you

(If you're wondering, Mir was a space station operated by the Soviet Union and later Russia from 1986 to 2001. I named it that since my desktops are named after American ships (Apollo being my main rig) and my laptop is named Sputnik since it's made of mostly aluminium.) So for a long time I have been interested in small but powerful laptops to replace my Alienware M11xR3. While I absolutely love that machine, it's getting old and the cooling system is totally shot as well as battery replacements. $300 to drop into that machine isn't exactly a smart decision for me. After some research I stumbled across the Elitebook 2570p. It's a 12.5" laptop with a socketed CPU (and support for 4c/8t quad core chips), dual HDD/SSD and RAID support, no WiFi whitelist and a 4G card port. But the big feature for me was the support for external graphics cards over the ExpressCard bus. It seems like a very cool thing to just go to my dad's place, drop the PC down into the HP dock and then plug in a GPU and start playing games. It's similar to the Blade Stealth + Core, except that this ENTIRE BUILD (Core costs an eye watering $700 here!) costs less than the Core alone. I picked up a base model 2570p off a local large computer refurbisher at auction for $240AUD. It came with a Core i5 2C/4T CPU at 2.8Ghz, 4GBs of RAM, and a 500GB HDD. I quickly swapped out the 500GB HDD with a new one I had lying around, and took the 8GB DIMM I had in the Alienware out and swapped the old 2GB back into there. I also ripped out the DVD drive - it was just extra weight that I didn't really freakin need. This thing is pretty snappy in daily tasks - the screen isn't amazing, and it gets a little too warm for my tastes, but it runs perfectly well. The company I bought it from had cleaned out the machine top to bottom, but that isn't hard as you'll see in a minute. HP offers a 120pg book on how to dismantle and reassemble this thing. Here's some views of the inside and bottom: Now onto the interesting part: the external GPU dock, which is nicknamed 'Mir'. The Elitebook natively supports up to Nvidia Kepler GPUs, or AMD and later Nvidia cards by using a memory override. This didn't matter to me, as I had a 770 sitting in my main system ready to be upgraded. It also supports hot-plugging the GPU and using the internal display for gaming with the GPU via Optimus. I ordered a GDC Beast v8 Expresscard to PCI-E 16x converter for just $50 off eBay, and it arrived at my door around a month after. It included a small plastic box with a couple ports and a PCI-E 16x slot on top, a data connection to ExpressCard cable, and a 20+4pin connector to their proprietary standard cable. Pretty freakin' cool. I then went on a search for a good cheap PSU. Efficiency didn't matter shit, as long as it was from a name brand and has 6+8pin connectors, I'd take it. I found a local place that tears down computers, and I got a cheap Cooler Master 500W PSU with 2x6pin, one through dual molex conns for $25 (before it ran a 2600k and a 570 afaik), and then ordered a 2x molex to PCI-E 8pin for $7 delivered. (For the PSU Nazi Squad, it doesn't really matter since it isn't even hitting 300W load out of 500W if I used a 770) Disaster strikes, and I'm fairly sure my 770 is stone-dead. I couldn't get it to boot, but I didn't try reseating it, instead just ripping it out of my system and dropping in my new 1070. My local PC shop didn't have a system to test it in, and I was again on the look for a new Kepler GPU. And this is where this story ends for now. To-do: - Get the special case that GDC offers for the Beast. It's not a priority, but if it's cheap I'm totally in. - Get a new Kepler GPU. Maybe 760, 780, or 780Ti. I'm gaming at 900p here, so it doesn't really matter that much. - Get a 3rd Gen i7-quad to go into the laptop. This will bring me up to desktop i5-tier performance. - Make mods to the cooling system. Make this thing not run so hot and heck, maybe even make it last longer on battery. - Get an SSD. This thing badly needs one. - Get the plastics kit from HP to get a space saver for the ODD bay. I don't need it, it's 2017 for fuck's sake. - Test everything. If you read to here, you're awesome . This is just a little side project of mine that I wanted to share with all of you here.

Hi, my personal laptop I use is a Dell Inspiron 15 3521. https://www.cnet.com/products/dell-inspiron-3521-15-6-pentium-2127u-4-gb-ram-500-gb-hdd-english-us/specs/ I had just bought a Radeon r9 255 2gb gpu from a friend who didn't want it anymore for $20. I have no desktop that would work with this so because of that I would like to use my laptop to play my games but can't play many of my games without putting the quality on very low. (Side question: would this gpu be able to work well with heavily modded minecraft?) Lets begin with my idea. So I've researched and found that I could use something like this mini PCIe to PCIe dock https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00Q4VMLF6/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1484023594&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=mini+pcie+to+pcie+dock&dpPl=1&dpID=61l1ojAnNWL&ref=plSrch to plug my graphics card into it then plug the mini PCIe cable into where my wifi module would plug into my laptop and could buy a wifi dongle to plug into a USB port so I still can connect to the internet. Except... having the ability to unplug the gpu easily and have portability with my laptop when I want to is important to me. Also I don't want a cord hanging out the side of my laptop, that would bother me. So, I was wondering if could buy this mini PCIe to USB 3.0 adapter https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B010L2GMOY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484022658&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=usb+3.0+to+mini+pcie&dpPl=1&dpID=419hpTh6wzL&ref=plSrch and use that to plug the dock into then plug into one of my USB 3.0 ports. What I'm most concerned is if there are any bottle necks from using USB 3.0 or really anything wrong in this setup and feel free to leave suggestions! Again it is really important that I have an easily unplugable cord or device to my laptop because I still do want the ability of portability. More information that I would like to add is I have an old desktop from 2003 that doesn't have PCIe slots but I don't use it anymore so could I take out the 250 watt power supply and use that solely to power my graphics card? Thanks in advance!

Are there any thunderbolt 3 enclosures for windows that are cheap? should I even bother? Dont know if there's a better place to put this, just wondering if there's any point in investing in eGPU enclosures and whether its financially viable. I've been researching it a little bit but I figure this is the forum to find this stuff out.

Hi to all! just want to ask something. i got an alienware alpha i7 4765T 2.00ghz with 8gb of ram and custom nvidia maxwell gtx gpu with 2gb of gddr5 i saw someone in youtube putting an external gpu with this pc by connecting some wires in the Lan card or wireless card and succesfully using the egpu. i was wondering about the bottleneck of the card because the slot used inside is not meant for graphics card wires or whatsoever. planning to liquid cool this pc and build external gpu with a little budget because im contented with this pc. any suggestions?

Any TB3/2 eGPU enclosures that are <$100? OK if they have 2 lanes.

Hi there. I recently got the razer core, with a gtx 980ti. I have properlly got the system working on my Mac OS side, and the performance increase is amazing for video editing. The main issue I am having is with Windows. I have tried every solution I can find to fix error code 12, I am totally unsure of what I am doing wrong now. I can boot into windows with the core connected, but as soon as I hot plug it, windows freezes and I can no longer do anything.... I am using an external display, and I have been following this tutorial I would have thought setting this sort of thing up with windows would have been a millions times easier than mac, apparently not... HELP!

Hi LTT SKIP THIS IF YOU WANT... This is my first post here. Im 14 and I need a new PC. Rn I have an Elitebook 8460p with an i5 2520m and intel hd 3000. It has only 4gb of 1333 ddr3 ram and I cant play games on it. I play dirt 3 almost every day and it is on ultra low 720p at 30fps. Gta 5 is ubplayable as almost every game. Before the 8460p I had a pc with a celeron e3200 i think and a 5450hd and 4gb of ddr2 800mhz so this laptop at 200€ was the best i could do. Now after owning this 8460p for a year I want a new pc/laptop. I go to my granparents and friends every weekend and usually play games there or at vacations i bring my laptop so I lets say need portability. My plans were: 1. G4560 and a 1060 3gb 2400mhz 8gb ddr4 and that build would be around 450€ right now 2. My 8460p with an exp gdc and a 1060 3gb right now 3. NEXT YEAR Dell 7567 with a 1050 ti at 750€ new 4. A cheap i5 laptop WITH A TB3 port for the cheapest tb3 egpu enclosure ALSO NEXT YEAR So what would be the best option here Rn I have 300€ but ill sell my moms hp 635 for 125€ and do a g4560 build or Suffer with my 8460p with hd 3000 for a year and buy a laptop with a dgpu or an egpu Please help me! If you have more questions ill reply! ☺
