Moar Ads... Starting today, Instagram is allowing advertisers to start running 15-second video ads that'll appear in your feed the same way that of sponsored image posts as of youtube's model Instagram, owned by Facebook, has deals to show 15-second autoplay spots from Disney, Activision, Lancome, Banana Republic and CW. The ads will start appearing today and roll out over the coming weeks Instagram has reportedly been testing the videos for several months, so it's possible that you've already seen one, but video ads are widely launching today, beginning with spots from Disney, Banana Republic, Activision, Lancome, and the CW network. Disney is promoting Big Hero 6 and Activision is promoting Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, both of which come out next week. The odd thing is that, unlike the photo ads for which Instagram has put so much effort into ensuring a coherent style with the type of images you would normally see in a feed, the video ads are basically just commercials. Even with their incongruity, video ads are likely to play a major role in Instagram's continued quest to make money under Facebook. Adweek reports that Instagram's tools for advertisers are fairly basic, only allowing them to target video spots based on users' age, gender, and country. Post your thoughts on this down below...is it too much to see just to get a look at a picture? leave your thoughts .. http://www.engadget.com/2014/10/30/instagram-video-ads http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/30/7131081/instagram-video-ads-launching-today

Ads..Ads everywhere.. On Monday, at a conference in Silicon Valley, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said the video giant was considering launching an ad-free subscription service, By offering subscriptions, YouTube would add not just another conduit of revenue, but new complexity as it gets into the competitive space previously dominated by TV subscription services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime In 2013, YouTube let individual content owners sell subscriptions to their stuff, but it has done little to promote that option since then Wojcicki, previously the lead on Google’s advertising and analytics team, became CEO of YouTube in February. Since then, she has prioritized content creators on the site and sought to understand the audience ecosystem that supports them. A subscription service could bolster creators’ earnings more by adding another source of revenue. And that extra money in their pockets probably can’t come too soon as rivals seek to undermine YouTube’s dominance There have been talks about yahoo bringing a tough competition to googles youtube & been contacting some of the top subscribed/viewed channel content providers .. @LinusTech *wink wink* Also facebook is doing something similar as you're reading this YouTube also hasn’t spelled out how the new subscription service would compensate its talent, though it has historically shown a commitment to seeking to generate revenue for its creators YouTube views are now coming from mobile devices. Along with that the site is growing 50 percent each year in terms of watch time YouTube wants its stars to stay(remember rumors of pewdiepie network? ), and it’s doing that by offering a new option. But the option doesn’t mean much unless viewers also get onboard. Bonus: Rather Cool news for those who haven't heard about adblock plus, Cool anyways So... would you pay to keep ads away? Post your thoughts & Comments / Rants down belowww... I am kind of getting tired of Samsung and Microsoft creating attack ads on apple sure it was clever the first few times but now its just getting annoying and there not even talking about there own products anymore. I am an Apple and Microsoft user. Personally i like apples laptops and i like to build my own pc that run windows but in terms of ads apple is a bigger company in my opinion. anyone want to put in there opinions?

Does anyone know how to disable Adblock Plus for certain Youtube channels? I want to disable adblocking for all of Linus' videos. In case you didn't watch the live stream Linus explained that Adblock prevents him from getting ad revenue. In return the Linus Media Group is not getting the money they deserve. Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Original article: http://tweakers.net/nieuws/96163/google-advertenties-op-glass-en-thermostaten-behoort-tot-de-mogelijkheid.html It's in Dutch , but I couldn't find it anywhere else. Basically, Google sent a letter, that was discovered by The Wall Street Journal, to the Securities and Exchange Commision back in december, arguing that they don't have to specify their revenues on mobile ads. One of their arguments is that it's difficult to indicate mobile devices, because the definition keeps on changing due to constant developments in the technological market. Google uses possible future examples such as fridges, thermostats, dashboards, glasses and watches. Even though Google doesn't have real plans for ads on these kinds of devices yet, the letter does make clear that Google is thinking about it. Personally, I think this could be quite real, especially with Google Glass getting closer and closer, Android Wear launching soon and the fact that Google recently acquired Nest, which for the people that don't know, produces smart thermostats. Every time I hear something like this I just can't help but think about that Futurama episode with the Lightspeed Briefs. P.S. I'm Dutch and this is my first time posting, so please don't be too hard on me, especially about possible grammatical errors.

http://arstechnica.com/business/2014/05/passive-listen-will-soon-be-enabled-for-facebook-app-during-status-updates/ Sure Facebook. Sure. You will send all of this data to your servers and will give it to the NSA. This is violation of our privacy, plain and simple. This spying must come to an end, and we as citizens who have unalienable rights must fight for them no matter where we live. Here's a video with some more info that encourages people to delete their Facebook accounts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfnKmPQdapw And some more links about other things that Facebook does: http://techcrunch.com/2014/01/28/facebook-reading-android-users-texts-well-hold-on/ http://www.democracynow.org/2014/3/17/snowden_docs_expose_how_the_nsa And if you think you have nothing to hide and that the NSA does good: http://lifehacker.com/5918171/plenty-to-hide http://gizmodo.com/the-five-dumbest-ways-that-people-defend-nsa-spying-1585242095 http://gizmodo.com/65-things-we-know-about-nsa-surveillance-we-didn-t-know-1586633452

Hello everyone! I haven't posted in awhile because of school and work and other things that keep me busy. But nonetheless I return with a question in poll form! Would you be willing to pay for a membership on YouTube and have special privileges like not having ads in the begging of the videos you watch? Why or why not, and if yes how much would you be willing to pay? I might be up to the idea as long as it isn't exuberantly expensive. What do you think?

The YouTube HTML5 player now supports ads, at least the boxes that come up from the bottom. Previously, the only videos that would be played with the HTML5 player were videos that were not monetized, but it looks like either they have figured out some form of DRM or they have just given up and decided to show the ads despite them being even easier to adblock (which is, I understand, the main reason why they have not been available before). To opt in, go to http://www.youtube.com/html5 and turn it on.

...But are they really that bad? I want to counter the argument and make a thread that shows the Adblock users what they are missing.... So post your favorite, most creative video advertisements here. Please do not discuss any issues you have with Adblock or general discussion on the advertising industry, there are other threads for that. This is purely an appreciation of good ads thread

Yesterday's live stream adblock section made me think about having ads on the forums. I know there can be some issues with Google's Adsense policies but what do you guys think about ads on the forum? Its easier to approve ads on the domain rather than pausing and resuming adblock every time you have watched a Linus video. If there was a topic like this before I apologize. Search did not show up one. @LinusTech

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2422575,00.asp It looks like Facebook is going to start selling spots for TV style ads on their website. The ads will be similar to the ones on YouTube videos. They plan to charge up to 2.5 million dollars per day for a spot. My thoughts I think companies will probably be willing to pay that much for ads. Facebook is a high traffic space for that sort of thing so I think many companies wouldn't care about how much of a rip off that is. What is troubling to me is that there seems to be no regard for the quality of the audience's experience while online. I was aggrevated enough when YouTube started plugging ads infront of their videos, the difference there was that I need a youtube and google account, there I have no choice but to put up with it. I'd also like to say that using adblock to stop that content is not really a valid excuse. Though I use adblock, it's more about the message that offends me. The fact that they would try something like this shows they have little respect for their audience. It seems like Facebook is just more concerned with making money than giving its consumers a good experience. (Though honestly, practically all companies do this so it's really nothing new.) My hatred for Facebook has been growing for a long time and now that they're pulling stuff like this... I'm seriously considering leaving. What about you, do you guys think this sort of change would have enough of an effect on you to delete your account?

When I visited Twtich today this was what I saw: GJ EA, well done. The hype is real, everyone wants to buy it and since there aren't any reviews out there from people that didn't get money for writing them you only hear good stuff about this game = more money shaved up EA's butt.

http://thefreebie.co/v4/ is one of the ads I see on the right and I am wondering, is this a legit thing, can I trust this or are the ads random and LinusMediaGroup doesn't really sift them?

Just clicked on Linus' new video and noticed that they've implemented a large, banner style ad at the top of the video. I've never minded ads on videos because I know that they help YouTubers and keep YouTube free for us to use. But an ad of that size at the top seems a little obnoxious to me. What are your thoughts?

Hello! I'm going to be starting a website (blog / web store) and I'm going to of course have advertisements on it. So Im here going asking you how much I should charge for a ad-free experience for a month? Thanks.

Project Sunblock a new independent project could see the end of advertising in parts of the internet by simply telling advertisers and companies using net adverts, where their marketing online is appearing. Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/08/04/ad_biz_gets_one_less_excuse_to_sponsor_freetards_and_filth/ It really struck me that advertisers simply don't track where their ad's go and thus what their marketing funds are going to, could prove interesting, but I can also see how it would be abused to build even more detailed profiles of users.

Does anyone know what virus is causing this and which program I can use to remove it? As you can see in the included picture I am running adblock on purpose to see if it will do anything, but it doesn't. The things circled in red shouldn't exist and open a popup ad if clicked. Sometimes I even get a simulated bing searchbard that opens an ad as well. I scanned my computer with both avg and malwarebytes, no result. Please help me out, it's driving me crazy!

a German company called sky (no relation to sky broadcasting company) has invented a technology that will send vibrations through a glass window (trans bus etc) so that when you lean against it makes audio advertisements come into your head and only you can hear it.It uses a bone conducting technology to achieve this goal and they are thinking about implementing it in trains in Germany no more sleep for You! www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23167112

Source : http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/5/4496852/adblock-plus-eye-google-whitelist Personally i don't mind ads as long it is not annoying and popup every 2 seconds.

Hey, I've been a viewer for about 7 years now, and I'm pretty sure that I've seen almost every video on the channel, though, shamefully, my adblocker is essentially always on. I do own a water bottle and a t-shirt from the store though. So, the question is, does this community think that it is morally justifiable to watch a channel like Linus Tech Tips with ads turned off, but instead support them by buying their merchandise? Regards

This Russian startup wants to put huge ads in space. I'm all for progress, science, innovation, etc. But this ?? It's a definitive no no no no! And even if many don't agree, well... We're talking space and Russia... Meaning they can do whatever they want without askling for authorization. As if light pollution wasn't enough already...
