i've just been playing around a bit on the 4S i got recently, and it's amazing what you can still do with it.

i was able to install youtube (an older version because iOS 9, but still plays fine), spotify (agian old version but works fine), even the most current version of WhatsApp. like, you could still use this as main phone if you had nothing else available. this is a phone from 2011!! that's insane!

Meanwhile most Android phones get Software support dropped after 2 to 3 years at best. I bought my Oppo Reno 2Z with Android 9 back in January and they already dropped OS support for it at least in my region.

@soldier_ph you mean after 1 year, 1.5 if you're lucky...

I used a borrowed iPhone 4 at one point when my phone broke and I was waiting to get a new one. For the most part it worked fine, but there were a few places where I struggled with apple's stupidity. I suppose I should explain what I mean. The apple app store allows you to download older versions of apps that are compatible with older iOS versions. However, you can only do this if you've downloaded the app before on a phone that supports the newest version. The issue with that is in order to install the app on an old iPhone, you have to have a newer iPhone you can install it on first (or you have to have installed the app before back when the phone supported it). So basically anyone who doesn't have access to a newer iPhone is screwed and there's no way to download new apps. Really frustrated me at the time because I couldn't listen to spotify or anything. Fortunately I had an old iTunes gift card laying around so I just bought a few songs I liked to help pass the time until I could get a new phone. And that was my iPhone 4 user experience XD

@WaggishOhio383 yeah that's true. i have access to isntall any app i want because well i have a 6s as main phone, so.. but i agree that that part of the experience is stupid. even dumber is this. if i went on the 4S and i just searched for spotify it gives me an error even though i've installed it on my 6s, but i can go to the purchases page of the app store on the 4S, look for it and install it from there and then it'll work. like what

Yeah. I guess the point to take from this is old iPhones work fine if you have a newer iPhone, but don't even bother trying to use an older iPhone if it's the only apple device you've ever owned.

Also I don't get what the big deal is with people freaking out about android phones losing support. Just because it doesn't get android updates doesn't mean apps don't work anymore. You'd be surprised how long apps stay supported on older versions of Android. Two-three years is about as long as I would want to own a phone before I upgrade anyway.

@WaggishOhio383we freak out about android updates because it does matter, and because apple simply does this better. that'swhy. it matters to a lot of us to have up to date software on our phones, and apple does that for a longer period of time. significantly longer.

Maybe I just don't think it's important because I've never really owned a phone that was still supported. Up until the phone I currently have, all the phones I'd owned (an S3, S4, and S6) were hand-me-downs from my parents, and didn't get software updates anymore at that point. I'm pretty used to running on older versions of android so I guess I'm not affected by it that much.

The S8 I have now is the first phone I've ever owned brand new out of the box (though I did get it a year and a half after it came out). At that point it was still supported, but they dropped it a few months ago. Still get the quarterly security updates though.

@WaggishOhio383my iPhone 6s, which came out in 2015, still runs iOS 14 which will be supported until fall of next year. that's just not a thing on android. if you buy an old phone you'll be stuck on an old version, with usually no security updates.

@Ashley xD I'm not saying that android really competes with that. I'm just saying that for me long term software updates aren't that big of a deal, and the other benefits android provides far outweigh that in my opinion. I totally understand why someone might prefer an iPhone for that reason though.

@James Evens the problem with custom roms is they are often more unstable. i have an Lg G3 (stock android 6) and i installed android 10 on it via lineageOS. it was so slow it took 15 minuytes to even detect touch after booting, opening spotify took literally a full minute, playback in spotify skipped around and it was unusably slow in every way. and then an update bricked it. not a great experience.
